Accomplishments

Short-term outcomes: Funding from the US Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative was used to develop informative videos on Fusarium head blight. One video compiled interviews highlighting the insight and expertise of NCERA-184 small grain pathologists. A second video was developed featuring an overview of FHB including field footage, 3D disease cycle, and information on management. Both videos will be made available on the Crop Protection Network website.

Outputs: Within participating states, information was shared through multiple platforms including winter meetings, research publications, extension publications, and social media. Coordinated efforts of this multi-state project enabled data exchange for regional and national recommendations including:

Crop Protection Network recommendations for Fungicide Efficacy for Control of Wheat Diseases CPN-3002-W

https://crop-protection-network.s3.amazonaws.com/publications/fungicide-efficacy-for-control-of-wheat-diseases-filename-2019-07-01-160518.pdf

Updates to the Fusarium Head Blight forecasting tool http://www.wheatscab.psu.edu/

Collection of disease loss estimates from each state that will be shared through the Crop Protection Network

Activities: NCERA 184 works under three primary objectives:

Objective 1: Better characterize best management practices for Fusarium Head Blight and leaf diseases in wheat and barley

Current research focuses on integration of moderately-resistant wheat cultivars combined with optimal timing of fungicide applications to develop integrated management options for Fusarium head blight. Work in this objective is part of the multi-state Integrated Management of FHB project funded through the U.S. Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative. Results have indicated the importance of using multiple management strategies to reduce FHB severity and grain DON levels.

Objective 2: Conduct fungicide efficacy trials for diseases in small grains

Participants of the NCERA-184 meetings discuss fungicide efficacy results within each state and utilize data to generate national fungicide efficacy recommendations that enable producers to optimize fungicide decisions. Outputs are shared through web-based publications, additional web tools are under development.

Objective 3: Improve disease management through forecasting tools

The NCERA-184 Committee coordinates a national level forecasting effort for FHB in wheat. The forecasting system is supported by the USDA-USWBSI and provides daily estimates of disease risk for 30 states. This system supports over 3,200 users and includes the FHB Alert System, which sends timely notifications of disease risk directly to farmers. Over 1,100 users are signed up for the Alert System feature. Participants of NCERA-184 provide individualized commentary for their state through the forecasting system and share model information though extension publications. NCERA 184 participants also provide data to support monitoring of stripe, stem, and leaf rusts.

Milestones: In year 2 (2018-2019) of this 5-year project, research trials continue to enable critical local data that is compiled through NCERA-184 participation for regional and national recommendations on resistant cultivars and fungicide efficacy, while supporting forecasting systems and collection of disease loss estimate data.
Publications

- Diseases in small grains (wheat, malting barley, grain barley, oats, and rye) can greatly affect yield potential and marketability of grain. To facilitate data driven management recommendations, NCERA 184 participants performed research to improve management of FHB, conducted fungicide efficacy trials for economically important foliar diseases, and supported the management and development of forecasting tools. Research results were shared through extension programming (field days, grower meetings, publications, blogs, social media) to maximize grower profits while minimizing adverse economic and environmental impacts of unnecessary, poorly timed, or less efficacious control measures. Nationwide, FHB is one of the most important diseases annually, more than 95% of the users of the FHB forecasting models and FHB Alert System considered the information to be of high or moderate value to their farm or business. User surveys between 2012-2018 indicated the value of the disease forecasting models and the FHB Alert System to be $58 million annually.

Following introductions, Alyssa Koehler presented the data collected from an infographic that was populated with state summary information prior to the meeting. This served as the state reports for Arkansas, Delaware/Maryland, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Wisconsin. Joe LaForest presented an update on current reporting of wheat rusts via the Ag Pest Monitor website and conducted a survey of meeting participants to further streamline the reporting process and adjust future output. Andrew Friskop presented wheat disease loss estimates from 2018-2020. Albert Tenuta gave an update on the Crop Protection Network. Erick DeWolf presented research entitled ‘Relationship of regional moisture on stripe rust epidemics in Kansas’, an update on the FHB forecasting tool for 2021, and a very brief request for feedback on the wheat fungicide efficacy table for 2021. Kendall Lamkey provided an administrative update as well as guidance for the renewal of the project. The meeting wrapped up with a business meeting. Full details of the meeting can be found in the meeting minutes.
Accomplishments

Short-term outcomes: QoI-fungicide resistant isolates of Zymoseptoria tritici were confirmed for the first time in Kentucky in 2020. Members of this group wrote and published the "Farmer's Guide to Wheat Diseases." This is a full-length guide developed to help farmers and crop consultants properly identify and manage diseases of wheat. Damon Smith was the lead editor with 9 co-editors. The book took several years to develop and was released in December 2020. The book will be distributed to farmers and consultants in all the states that produce wheat in the U.S. This extension book will serve to improve the management of wheat diseases and increase the profitability of wheat production.

Outputs: Within participating states, information was shared through multiple platforms including winter meetings, research publications, extension publications, and social media. Coordinated efforts of this multi-state project enabled data exchange for regional and national recommendations including:

Crop Protection Network recommendations for Fungicide Efficacy for Control of Wheat Diseases CPN-3002-W https://crop-protection-network.s3.amazonaws.com/publications/fungicide-efficacy-for-control-of-wheat-diseases-filename-2021-03-23-170909.pdf

Outputs are shared through web-based publications and additional web tools are under development.

Participants of NCERA-184 provide individualized commentary for their state through the forecasting system and share model information though extension publications and social media. NCERA-184 participants also provide data to support monitoring of stripe, stem, and leaf rusts.

Milestones: In year 3 (2019-2020) of this 5-year project, research trials continue to enable critical local data that is compiled through NCERA-184 participation for regional and national recommendations on resistant cultivars and fungicide efficacy, while supporting forecasting systems and collection of disease loss estimate data.
Publications

The meeting was opened at 8:01 AM on March 17th, 2022 by Terry Spurlock and participants did brief introductions. In leu of state reports, Kelsey Andersen Onofre presented an infographic summarizing updates from Wisconsin, Tennessee, Arkansas, Ohio, Louisiana, Missouri, New York, Kentucky, Kansas, Indiana, Nebraska, South Dakota, Delaware, Maryland, and Michigan. A majority of states reported below average disease levels for 2021, with stripe rust and Fusarium head blight mentioned as key diseases in multiple states. Terry Spurlock gave a brief overview of the project re-write that was submitted in December, 2021. Multipe members participated in the re-write and the reviews were positive. Alyssa Koehler and Marty Chlivers provided updates about a FHB isolate survey that is being conducted nationally. Severy groups provided research updates. Nathanial White presented work from a survey of QoI resistance in Parastagonospora nodorum and Zymoseptoria tritici in Kentucky. Erick De Wolf provided updates about the new user interface for the FHB forecasting system (wheatscab.psu.edu) along with a project update on stripe rust forecasting efforts. Wanderson Bucker Moraes presented a preliminary report of efficacy of two new fungicide products labeled for FHB control: Sphaerex and Prosaro Pro. Andew Friskop proposed the initiation of a uniform fungicide protocol for foliar diseases of wheat. This initiative received strong support and aligns well with the goals of NCERA-184. The meeting concluded with a business meeting. Ken Obasa will serve as secretary for the coming year. Full meeting minutes are attached.
Accomplishments

Short-term Outcomes: A multi-state effort is underway, through funding from the US Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative, to assess fungicide sensitivity of F. graminearum isolates to the SDHI fungicide active pydiflumetofen. Isoaltes of Parastagonospora nodorum and Zymoseptoria tritici were identified in Kentucky with resistance to QoI fungicides. Fungicide-resistant isolates contained the G143A mutation. A preliminary model for stripe rust is currently being tested in Kansas. Integrated management and fungicide efficacy trials were conducted in multiple states and locations. Members from participating states published more than 25 peer reviewed research articles and more than 90 extension publications in 2021.

Outputs: Members from participating states shared information through winter meetings, publications, extension publications, radio, television, YouTube, and social media. Members worked together to produce the following outputs:

The 2021 Fungicide Efficacy for Control of Wheat Diseases publication (CPN-3002-W) https://cropprotectionnetwork.s3.amazonaws.com/cpn3002_fungicideefficacywheatdisease_final.pdf

Updates to the Fusarium Head Blight forecasting tool http://www.wheatscab.psu.edu/

2021 Wheat Disease Loss Estimates from the United States and Ontario, Canada (https://cropprotectionnetwork.org/publications/wheat-disease-loss-estimates-from-the-united-states-and-ontario-canada-2021)

Activities: NCERA-184 works under three primary objectives:

Objective 1: Better characterize best management practices for Fusairum head blight and leaf diseases of wheat and barley.

Current research in participating states has focused on both fungicide efficacy and the integration of variety resistance and well-timed fungicides for the control of Fusarium head blight. This research is part of the multi-state Integrated Management Coordinated Project funded through the U.S. Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative. Results have indicated the importance of using multiple management strategies to reduce FHB severity and grain DON levels. Research has also indicated that newer fungicides such as Miravis Ace, perform as well or better than previous industry standard fungicides.

Objective 2: Conduct fungicide efficacy trials for diseases in small grains

Participants of NCERA-184 conduct fungicide efficacy trials anually and discuss fungicide efficacy results within each state. These data are utilized to generate national fungicide efficacy recommendations that enable producers to optimize fungicide decisions. Outputs are shared through web-based publications.

Objective 3: Improve disease management through forecasting tools

The NCERA-184 Committee coordinates a national level forecasting effort for FHB in wheat. The forecasting system is supported by the USDA-USWBSI and provides daily estimates of disease risk. User surveys for the FHB forecasting effort indicate that this information has an estimated value of $57 million in 2021. A stripe rust forecasting model is currently being validated in Kansas, with the goal of a future national scale forecasting system. These efforts for forecasting for stripe rust and other diseases of wheat are supported through the National Predictive Model Tool Initiative.

Milestones: In year 4 of 5 of this project (2020-2021), data were generated by partner states to compile national recommendations for fungicide efficacy and other best managemnt practices for small grains diseases.

Publications
