Each participating institution provided updates regarding departmental activities, research efforts, and institutional changes.

 

Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by Chair Chuanlan Liu.

Institutional and Station Updates

Members reported on significant changes affecting textile and apparel programs nationwide, including:

  • Departmental restructuring and mergers within colleges and universities
  • Reductions in travel and professional development funding
  • Administrative leadership transitions
  • Declines in Ph.D. student enrollments
  • Changes in faculty positions and restructuring
  • Adjustments to physical space allocation within departments

These discussions provided critical insight into national trends affecting textile and apparel education, research capacity, and workforce development.

 

New Business and Major Decisions

Fashion Symposium 2026: Fashion AI and Policy

Louisiana State University will host the 2026 Fashion Symposium, scheduled for April 9–11, 2026.

Key planning decisions and actions included:

  • Establishment of a symposium focused on Artificial Intelligence and Policy in Fashion
  • Development of a peer-reviewed abstract and full-paper submission process
  • Planning of a special issue collaboration with the Clothing and Textile Research Journal (CTRJ)
  • Securing financial support for the symposium (University of Minnesota participation)
  • Development of conference proceedings and design catalog options
  • Creation of presentation opportunities for faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate researchers
  • Planning of a Best Paper Competition judged by NCCC-065 members
  • Encouragement of interdisciplinary participation and student research pipeline development

Templates and submission guidelines will be shared with members, and recruitment efforts are underway.

 

Future Initiatives for 2027

Members discussed long-term initiatives to strengthen scholarly output and collaboration:

  • Planning of an annual symposium series with rotating themes
  • Development of a monograph based on symposium research contributions
  • Creation of collaborative publications addressing AI and social change in the fashion marketplace

 

Future Meeting

The committee agreed to continue meeting in conjunction with the ITAA Annual Conference.

The committee continues to advance its mission through collaborative research, knowledge dissemination, and infrastructure development.

Objective 1: Address existing and emerging issues related to social change in the marketplace.

The NCCC-065 project continues to generate long-term impacts by:

  • Strengthening national research collaboration among textile and apparel scholars

  • Enhancing research productivity and publication opportunities
  • Supporting workforce development through student engagement and mentorship
  • Contributing to the advancement of knowledge addressing social change in the marketplace

These efforts help position participating institutions and researchers to address critical economic, technological, and societal challenges in the textile and apparel industry.

Summary

The NCCC-065 project successfully advanced its objectives through research collaboration, symposium development, and infrastructure building. The planned symposium and associated publications represent significant milestones that will contribute to the project's long-term research impact.

Impacts

  1. During the 2024–2025 year NCCC-065 strengthened a stable multistate research network that advanced scholarship and student training on emerging marketplace social changes (notably AI and sustainability), produced peer-reviewed outputs and conference presentations, and catalyzed new externally supported student-engaged projects and symposium infrastructure that increase research capacity and industry-academic engagement.
