Accomplishments
FY2019
Short-Term Outcomes: Participating members of W3005 extension and research working groups collaborated together to increase their own knowledge of the interacting roles of positive caregiver-child relationships, nutrition, and physical activity in prevention of child obesity – one of the four outcomes of W3005. W3005 members passed along this knowledge to stakeholders in members’ states (see Dissemination to Public in Outputs below).
Outputs:
- Tools
- Extension working group developed W3005 Child Obesity Prevention Programs in Extension Rubric (W3005-COPPER) a tool for Extension program evaluation and assessment.
- Post-docs
- Dr. Carolyn Sutter, Dr. Fiese’s postdoctoral fellow, participated in and contributed to the Research Working Group of which Dr. Fiese is a member. Dr. Sutter is now a Research Specialist at the University of Chicago.

Activities:
- Members of the Diet Quality working group of W2005 joined W3005 Research and Extension working groups. They selected a systematic review methodology and collaborated on and completed a systematic review of diet quality interventions with children 2 to 12.
- Members of the Research Working group of W3005 selected an umbrella review methodology and have collaborated on an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses of parental/caretaker involvement in diet or physical activity interventions to prevent childhood obesity.
Milestones with 2019 Accomplishments
Develop methodology and protocol to survey Cooperative Extension (including EFNEP) obesity prevention programs which include positive caregiver-child relationships, nutrition, and/or physical activity.
Complete the review of meta-analyses and systematic reviews (including those by W2005) of obesity prevention programs that include positive caregiver-child relationships, nutrition, and/or physical activity to identify relevant programs.
- The systematic review completed by the Diet Quality working group of W2005 was submitted for presentation at the 2020 meeting of the American Society of Nutrition (majority of authors continue to serve in W3005 Extension and Research working groups).
- The Research working group completed full-text screening of all articles resulting from FY2019 search of meta-analyses and systematic reviews for the W3005 umbrella review.
Generate comprehensive list of programs that focus on positive caregiver-child relationships, nutrition, and/or physical activity
- Extension working group made the following progress:
- Extension working group recognized that comprehensive generation of a list of programs needed to be preceded by identification of the tool to evaluate them.
- As reported for 2018, the GRADE was not selected as the tool for evaluation of Extension programs.
- Extension working group identified the WHO Good Practice Appraisal Tool for Obesity Prevention Programmes, Projects, Initiatives, and Interventions (WHO Appraisal Tool).
- Extension Working Group reviewed the literature from 2011 (date of WHO tool publication) to 2018 to make sure that there was not a tool that is more appropriate.
- A second appraisal tool, the Guide for Nutrition Interventions and Education (GENIE) was identified.
- The most pertinent criteria from both WHO Appraisal Tool and GENIE were selected.
- Through a series of iterative reviews by the Extension working group, a modified combination of the two tools was developed: W3005 Child Obesity Prevention Programs in Extension Rubric (W3005-COPPER).
- Research working group made the following progress in 2019 on this goal:
- Completed abstract review of approximately 1819 articles
- Completed full text review of 108 articles
Implement evaluation of childhood obesity prevention program evidence quality using GRADE.
- The determination to not use GRADE was made due to its traditional application within clinical settings rather than community settings.
- Extension working group developed a new appraisal tool (W3005-COPPER) as the best method of evaluating and assessing Extension child obesity intervention/prevention programs. After refinement, tool will be disseminated for use nationwide.
- Research working group adopted AMSTAR2 as appropriate tool for evaluating quality of systematic reviews and meta-analyses included in an umbrella review.
Compile results of GRADE evaluation of programs.
- Extension working group developed W3005-COPPER as the tool for evaluating Extension programs in child obesity intervention/prevention.
- Extension working group will continue to make progress on the compilation of results from their evaluation of extension programs in 2020.
- Research working group evaluated quality of five systematic reviews and meta-analyses identified in FY2019 search using AMSTAR2.
- Research working group will complete the updated umbrella review compiling results of systematic reviews and meta-analyses updated in 2020 using AMSTAR2.
Determine best approaches and venues to share results with medical, scientific and extension communities. Venues that will be considered include eXtension, https://CYFAR.org (Children, Youth and Families at Risk), professional organizations (e.g., National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior, Preister Conference).
- Extension working group is on track for submissions to be presented in 2021
