Accomplishments

1. The third annual Beef Cattle Genetics Brown Bagger educational program was sponsored and delivered with the assistance of several NCERA-199 members. This series provided continuing educational opportunities to industry, extension, and university personnel with presentations available on the web. Presentations from this program as well as previous programs can be found at http://www.ansci.cornell.edu/nbcec/education.html

2. NCERA-199 members participated in a National Animal Breeding Seminar Series, sponsered by th NBCEC. Topics covered included multiple breed genetic evaluation and parent identification through commercial ranch evaluation. Presentations from this seminar series can be found at http://www.ansci.cornell.edu/nbcec/education.html

3. NCERA-199 members worked with the NBCEC to host a Symposium on Adaptability held October 29-30, 2004 in Kansas City. This symposium was for beef cattle extension specialists and beef breed association staff members. This symposium reviewed multiple topics related to adaptability of beef cattle and provided an additional educational opportunity for dissemination of current topics in adaptability. Presentations from this symposium can be found at http://www.ctorque.com/ANSCI/adaptability.html

4. NCERA-199 members published multiple trade magazine articles for national beef breed and regional beef cattle associations. NCERA-199 members made several presentations at the Beef Improvement Federation Annual Convention, at national and regional Animal Science meetings, and extension presentations to disseminate current beef cattle genetic research.

5. The NCERA-199 committee members have put together a renewal of their project for 2006 and they have submitted it.

Impacts

  1. NCERA-199 members provide service to numerous beef cattle producers through national sire summaries, research, and consultation for beef cattle breed association membership.
  2. NCERA-199 members participated in breed association events, including board meetings and annual meetings.
  3. Educational programs, such as the Brown Bagger Series and articles in breed association magazines impact beef production efficiency through rapid transfer of knowledge from research into production.
  4. The continued research, improvement, and implementation of Economically Relevant Traits, such as decision support software, provides cattle producers with selection tools with a direct impact on profitability.
