SAES-422 Multistate Research Activity Accomplishments Report

Status: Approved

Basic Information

  • Project No. and Title: NCR57 : Reproductive Physiology
  • Period Covered: 05/01/2002 to 05/01/2003
  • Date of Report: 07/22/2003
  • Annual Meeting Dates: 05/21/2003 to 05/22/2003

Participants

Mark Diekman Indiana, Tim Safranski Missouri, Lloyd Anderson Iowa, Dave Guthrie USDA-ARS-Beltsville, Joe Ford USDA-ARS-MARC, Duane Davis Kansas, Rod Geisert Oklahoma, Tom Welsh Texas (substituting for Dr. Fuller Bazer and Dr. Tom Spencer), John Parrish Wisconsin, Brett White Nebraska, Deb Hamernik USDA-CSREES-PAS - John Baker - Administrative Advisor - Michigan State University

Accomplishments

1) Scientists involved with the committee continue to identify mechanisms controlling pubertal development, resumption of cycles after parturition, folliculogenesis, gametogenesis, fertilization, pregnancy establishment, and survival of embryos and fetuses. Further, the committee is identifying genes and their products that regulate these processes and developing technologies for in vitro embryo production, enhanced embryo and fetal survival, and regulation of the estrous cycle. Please see Appendix A for summaries of individual reports presented at the 2003 NCR-57 Committee Meeting.

2) Following the success of last years meeting, a compact disc containing all of the presentations from the committees first biennial symposium, the Seasonal Infertility in Swine Symposium, was released to participants. It is anticipated that information on this compact disc will be disseminated to scientists, extension educators and producers alike.

3) The research stations participating in the NCR-57 project published 117 refereed journal articles, 7 technical reports and 27 abstracts during the last reporting period. Many of these publications were based on collaborations established through the North Central Regional Committee on Reproductive Physiology.

Plans for the Coming Year:

Of utmost priority for the committee is preparation of the proposal for the 5-year renewal of the NCR-57 Committee Research Project (Due December 1, 2003). The committee was overwhelmingly supportive of pursuing the renewal and continuing the highly productive collaborative efforts of the committee. In addition, the committee is planning its second biennial symposium to be held at next years annual meeting on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames, IA. The Symposium on Boar Stud Management and A.I. in Swine will focus on data from boar studs that typically are not reported in refereed journal articles. A poll of industry representatives performed by the organizing committee indicated that this topic needed to be addressed and would be beneficial to producers. Consistent with its objectives, the committee will also continue to explore mechanisms underlying reproductive biology of swine and other domestic food animals through collaborative efforts of its representatives.

Impacts

  1. Research investigations under the objectives of the committee will result in identification of complex biological processes involved in reproduction and lead to novel approaches in production agriculture.
  2. The Seasonal Infertility in Swine Symposium has promoted collaborative efforts among research scientists, extension educators and pork industry representatives.
  3. Dissemination of information from the Seasonal Infertility in Swine Symposium will foster communication between scientists and producers, resulting in improved reproductive management practices and increased profitability.
  4. Publications representing collaborations among committee members will help advance our understanding of reproductive mechanisms in livestock, promoting increased reproductive efficiency and enhanced sustainability of domestic food animal production.
