Statement of Issues and Justification
Statisticians are becoming more critical in providing design, analysis and interpretation for research scientists. The annual University Statisticians of Southern Experiment Stations (USSES) meeting provides an opportunity for applied statisticians associated with Experiment Stations to discuss and develop approaches to provide effective statistical consulting support for Experiment Station scientists. As statistics matures as a mathematical discipline, USSES is necessary to continue to focus statisticians on applications and needs of agricultural scientists.
Objectives

Provide a forum for the exchange of statistical and computational knowledge and information required by statisticians serving as consultants to Experiment Station scientists.

Generate regional and collaborative research, as required, to develop statistical methodology necessary for agricultural research.
Procedures and Activities
USSES meets annually at a participating Experiment Station. The statisticians at that Experiment Station organize and conduct the program. The annual meeting provides a springboard for discussion of new ideas for other regional activity and further collaborative research. Two highly successful regional projects have grown from the USSES work group. S-94 was instrumental in the early developments of the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) at North Carolina State University. SAS is now the premier statistical analysis progam available for design, analysis and management of agricultural and related research. Another regional project, S-190, that grew out of USSES was the research and development that resulted in a publication on the design, analysis, and interpretation of mixed model experiments, widley used in agricultural research. The research from this project led to new and innovative methodologies that are now widely available and used in agriculture and many other areas of research. Periodically USSES meets jointly with statisticians from other regions to exchange ideas and develop new research and collaboration.

- Annual forums for the exchange of statistical methodology and approaches.
- Inititiation of new statistical research and development leading to publications appropriatae for agricultural scientists.
- Impact on availability of innovative statistical applications in SAS, the widely used statistical package.
- Increased understanding and application of statistics in genomics research.
Projected Participation

The primary users of the results and services of the project will be Experiment Station scientists, other researchers and fellow statisticians. Results will be made available through approprite publications, presentations, workshops and forums. The continuing close working relationship with SAS will insure the development of statistical software necessary for agricultural scientists.
Organization/Governance
Each year USSES will select a chair and location for the next meeting. The chair will be chosen by the particpants at that meeting. A secretary will be identified each year by the group to record minutes and develop the annual report. The adminstrative advisor will coordinate these administrative activities.
