• Mid-term review for the W-3005 project will be in 2020

  • If you're signed up for the W-3005, you are expected to attend the annual meeting

  • Rachael announced that this is her final meeting, as she will be stepping down in her role as NIFA Administrative Advisor representative for W-3005 due to other commitments at her university; a replacement will be recommended to Sarah Lupis

Achievements of W-2005

Physical activity

  • Two publications from W-2005 related to PA (Melinda Manore, D. Larson-Meyer, Anne Lindsay, Nobuko Hongu, Linda Houtkooper. (2017) Dynamic Energy Balance: An Integrated Framework for Discussing Diet and Physical Activity in Obesity Prevention—Is it More than Eating Less and Exercising More? Nutrients9:8, pages 905; plus, one in the ACSM Health & Fitness Journal) – can we build on pub success with this topic?

  • Systematic review/meta-analysis opportunity

  • This was followed by quite a bit of discussion related to need to promote integrated approach to nutrition and PA among nutrition and other health professionals and how can W-3005 contribute to this

Diet quality

  • Systematic review and meta-analysis update … in progress

Parenting

  • Systematic review and meta-analysis update … in progress

Review W-3005 Proposal

  • Janet and Laura reviewed objectives for W-3005 proposal

  • We will focus on 3-5-yr-olds and 6-12-yr-olds (ages 3-12-years-old)

  • To answer Objective 1.1., we will conduct a systematic review of systematic reviews/meta-analyses

  • We are interested in on “integrated programs” (focused on 2 of the 3 components – diet, PA, parenting)

  • We will Divide and Conquer to achieve Objective 1 (sub-question #1 and #2)

    • Extension Programs – Janet, Linda, Annie, Karen, Ingrid, Rafida

    • Research Programs – Laura, Emily, Diane, Scott, Nurgul, Melanie, Enette

Membership procedure, participation, publications, annual meetings etc.

Location of 2018 meeting: Las Vegas, NV

Potential dates: Pls hold these dates for now: Oct 4th and 5th and Oct 11th and 12th

  • Linda Houtkooper will let the group know in the next month or two which of these dates work best for her.

Janet posed the question – considering future retirements, etc., should we invite others to join W-3005?

  • Please send rec’s to Janet/Laura

Elections: Laura Hubbs-Tait and Janet Kurzynske were re-elected co-Chairs of W-3005, and Melanie Hingle was re-elected Secretary.

GRADE discussion

Ingrid led a discussion about the elements of program evaluation and some possible rubrics the Extension group can use to evaluate the Extension programs identified by the work group

  • CDC has a PSE (policy, systems, environment) approach to program evaluation

Working Groups and Milestones for 2018, commitments and process

  • Research Group (Timeline for 2017-2018)

Proposed systematic review of systematic reviews of childhood obesity interventions.

In the next 3 months, Melanie and Scott will organize the methods of the review of reviews and work with the UA health sciences librarian to conduct the search. Laura, Enette and Diane will develop the templates of the tables we will use to organize our results. Nurgul is Communications Committee Chair. She has set up a free Zoom account for our working group. (We could use this for the bigger group call as well.)

Timeline:

  • Develop methods (Nov-Dec 2017)

  • Begin library research (prior to Dec 31 2017)

  • Conference call (Jan 2018) to discuss findings

  • Data analysis (Feb-May 2018)

  • Conference call (with larger group) to integrate findings (Summer 2018)

  • Writing (June-Sept 2018)

  • Submission (Oct 1 2018)

  • Extension Group

Ingrid Adams will lead this group.

Goal:

  1. Identify programs/curriculum/interventions – develop a method to find programs

  2. Evaluate programs – develop a rubric of evaluating programs looking at what has been used

  3. Develop a list of programs that have strong evidence base [*goal for 2019*]

Cooperative Extensions developed programs, programs they use, and then other potential programs appropriate for use, commercially produced maybe later.

Impact on Ages 3-12

Activities/Timeline

  1. Method to search for programs – Karen, Janet: Talk in January as small group

  2. Rubric for grading – Ingrid, Linda, Rafida, Anne: Talk in January as a small group

  3. February conference call with entire group

  4. February – June work in groups

  5. Summer – entire group conference call

  6. Karen will set conference calls

  7. Ingrid will set up dropbox

Adjourn – 2pm PST

Introduction of W3005 New NIFA Administrative Advisor, Dr. Jinzeng Yang

Jinzeng Yang is from the Department of Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Science, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. Dr. Yang provided some brief remarks, and concluded with a friendly reminder that we will need to provide a progress report from this meeting within 60 days of the meeting (due date: December 5, 2018)

Updates from W2005 Working Groups

  • W2005 parenting working group systematic review was presented at Experimental Biology 2016 and the review was concluded with that presentation.

Reports from W3005 Working Groups

Active participants in W3005 are members of one of the two W3005 working groups: Research or Extension.

Summary of Research Group Reports

Emily Tomayko reported on behalf of the research working group. The umbrella review is well underway thanks to Emily’s leadership, Melanie Hingle's collaboration, and group efforts as well as contributions by Ellen Street, Emily’s PhD student, and Carol Howe, research librarian from the University of Arizona. Initial search has been completed and 1800+ abstracts have been screened. Next steps include screening 112 full-text articles, revision of data extraction spreadsheet, and implementation of quality assessment tool. On Friday, group members worked on operationalizing AMSTAR 2, a widely recognized, validated quality assessment tool used to evaluate systematic reviews. Additional work is needed to finalize operationalization of AMSTAR-2 for current review. Emily will invite working group members to move forward as co-authors/contributors.

Summary of Extension Group Reports

Ingrid Adams reported on behalf of the extension working group. The group is working on development of a GRADE-like (quality assessment) system that could be used to evaluate quality of Extension programs and curricula. The group has reviewed the literature for manuscripts describing evaluation tools for Extension and similar programs in terms of quality criteria in order to inform a checklist that could be used to identify higher quality programs. The group identified the WHO Good Practice Appraisal Tool for Obesity Prevention Programmes, Projects, Initiatives, and Interventions as a key evaluation tool. There is now a database search underway to identify Extension or similar program evaluation tools published between 2011 and the present. Next steps include letters to authors of the Extension programs to obtain the curricula so that the quality assessment can be applied. This will help the group identify the “best” most appropriate programs. Expert input will be solicited using the Delphi process and the tool will be pilot tested.

After refinement, tool will be disseminated for use nationwide.

Research working group adopted AMSTAR2 as appropriate tool for evaluating quality of systematic reviews and meta-analyses included in an umbrella review.

Compile results of GRADE evaluation of programs.

Extension working group developed W3005-COPPER as the tool for evaluating Extension programs in child obesity intervention/prevention.

Extension working group will continue to make progress on the compilation of results from their evaluation of extension programs in 2020.

Research working group evaluated quality of five systematic reviews and meta-analyses identified in FY2019 search using AMSTAR2.

Research working group will complete the updated umbrella review compiling results of systematic reviews and meta-analyses updated in 2020 using AMSTAR2.

Determine best approaches and venues to share results with medical, scientific and extension communities.
