Brief Summary of Minutes

Summary of Annual Meeting

Faculty and graduate students from twenty four universities, a USDA representative, an industry executive and representative participated in the 2010 WERA-72 annual meeting, held at Santa Clara University in the Leavey School of Business, June 13th-15th, 2010. The program agenda, business meeting agenda and treasurers report are attached in appendices A, B and C respectively.

The annual meeting featured an industry speaker, eight paper sessions and one panel discussion. In initiating this years annual meeting, Peter Thor, President of Bellisimo Foods, was this years invited industry speaker. His presentation, titled Emerging Agribusiness Issues for Research and Instruction, examined the strategic challenges raised by the increasing consolidation of the agribusiness industry. As agribusiness supply chains have been subject to increasing concentration over some time, such a topic is particularly relevant. His focus was on the distributional implications of concentration in which an emphasis on cost efficiencies in logistics is primary to their ability in competing with the larger and more established distributors, such as SYSCO foods.

In building upon the supply chain aspects of Peters presentation, a paper session titled Renewable Fuel Supply Chains followed. This included three paper presentations that were titled BioFuels, Energy Prices, and Supply Chains (University of Nebraska-Lincoln), The Effect of Ethanol on Transportation Flows and Modes (Purdue University), and Product Willingness and ability to Supply Biomass (Southern Illinois University Cabondale). Each of these presentations introduced various pricing, logistics and consumer related challenges of the alternative fuel market. The subsequent paper session on Agribusiness Economics and Strategy also continued with an alternative fuel theme. In particular, a paper titled, Economic, Marketing, Environmental and Financial Opportunities for Biogas Recovery Systems (University of Georgia) examined the financial and cost related factors impacting the economic viability of Biogas recovery systems. This session was then concluded by a presentation titled, Determinants of Biotechnology Product Performance: Absorptive Capacity and Alliances (Texas A&M University). In this presentation, product innovation has been attributed to biotechnology firms ability to not only assimilate external knowledge experiences, but also to manage different types of alliance partnership.

As agribusiness teaching has become increasingly recognized as an important component of agribusiness faculty responsibilities, a panel and paper session on teaching followed. Specifically, in building upon interest from last years meeting, these sessions focused on teaching tools and methods for Millennial students, with a distinct focus on the use of new teaching technologies. The subsequent paper sessions examined various other aspects of agribusiness that included cooperatives, agribusiness and market development in developing economies, and marketing strategies of local food products. The remaining session ended with current issues in agribusiness with a theme on food safety and traceability. For a full listing of paper sessions, please see Appendix A.

There are two notable distinction of this years annual meeting. Wes Harrison (former WERA-72, 2009 Chair) and Desmond Ng (WERA-72, 2010 Chair), have completed the coordination of a special issue titled the Pluralism of Agribusiness for the International Food and Agribusiness Management Review. We have completed our first round of the review process in which 10 paper proposals have been accepted and will be advanced into the next stage of the review process. We anticipate these papers will serve in not only highlighting the frontiers of agribusiness research but also outline some of the defining features of this field. This special issue thereby serves the broader goals of WERA-72 in advancing the research of agribusiness. Another distinction in this years meetings is that Greg Baker and Jessica Gagnon of Santa Clara University had coordinated this years winery tour of the Sonoma Valley. The Winery tour was well attended and received. The membership has expressed interest in continuing such activities in future meetings.

Impact Statements

  1. WERA-72 continues to link university research, teaching and extension faculty with government agency personnel and industry leaders. The program at the annual meeting once again included an invited speaker from industry. The WERA72 leadership has maintained this practice for many years now, and is committed to continuing to use the annual meeting to facilitate these linkages. Furthermore, as agribusiness continues to mature as a field, an important focus in its development is to maintain and develop teaching, research and extension activities that reflect the interest of agribusinesses. WERA-72 will continue to plays an important role in developing such a focus.
  2. WERA72 continues to facilitate the coordination and development of timely research, extension, and teaching projects among participating faculty, graduate students, government, and industry leaders, creating a pool of shared expertise in general area of agribusiness scholarship. For instance, both Desmond Ng (2010 WERA Chair) and Wes Harrison (2009 WERA Chair) have been involved in coordinating the Agribusiness Research Forum; a forum to develop a critical mass of scholars to advance frontiers in agribusiness research. Some of the members in this forum are also members of WERA-72. In addition to help developing a critical mass of agribusiness research expertise, WERA-72 has been supportive of graduate student engagement in this field. To encourage greater graduate student engagement, three travel scholarships were offered for this years annual meeting.
  3. WERA-72 continues maintain and further develop its electronic communication methods, regularly using the organizations listserv to communicate timely announcements, including job postings, research grant opportunities, and calls for paper proposals with an agribusiness focus. Past presentations have also been posted on the organizations webpage, providing an institutional depository of past agribusiness scholarship. It is anticipated that through such communications, it improve the quality and quantity of agribusiness research, teaching and extension that is produced by participating members, as well as fostering integrated and multi-state projects among WERA72 participants.

Brief Summary of Minutes

Summary of Annual Meeting

Faculty and graduate students from twenty two universities, a USDA representative, and an industry executive participated in the 2011 WERA-72 annual meeting, held at the Excalibur Hotel in Las Vegas Nevada, June 12th-14th, 2011. The program agenda, business meeting agenda and treasurers report are attached in appendices A, B and C respectively.

The annual meeting featured an industry speaker, eight paper sessions and one panel discussion. The WERA-72 group hosted scientists with the S-1050 regional research project, Assessing the Consumer Behavior, Market Coordination and Performance of the Consumer-Oriented Fruit and Vegetable Sector. Two of the paper sessions were dedicated to joint agribusiness and produce supply chain issues. Mr. Jim Prevor, CEO and Editor-in Chief at Phoenix Media Network, was this years invited industry speaker. His presentation examined the growing retail grocery sector market power, increased demand for supply chain quality assurance and the implications for food firms in the economy. This was a particularly fitting presentation for the WERA-72 group while hosting the S-1050 group, as well.

The two S-1050 sessions followed Mr. Prevors presentation, including a total of six papers related to Issues in Produce Marketing Chains. The S-1050 group used the annual meeting forum to capture useful feedback from members of WERA-72 in preparation for publishing these titles in a special issue of the Journal of Agribusiness (Spring 2011 Volume 29.1).

A panel discussion followed focused on Framing and Delivering Agribusiness Extension/Outreach Programs. Faculty from five universities with significant extension appointments discussed their own programs and led interactions with the group regarding some of the issues, challenges, changes, and opportunities facing extension and agribusiness.

The subsequent paper session included three papers related to instruction in agribusiness. This session has always been of considerable value to WERA-72 attendees as most have teaching appointments. The papers addressed issues of performance evaluation, on-line learning advances, and incorporating student-driven learning objectives into agribusiness courses.

The business meeting was conducted along with a meeting of the executive officers. Details of the business meeting are presented in the attached appendix.

The second day included a full slate of research paper presentations. The first session focused on themes of Agribusiness Strategy, including two papers market orientation. There has been a long tradition in WERA-72 of linking the agribusiness research with the business strategy research that has emerged primarily in the business school.

The second paper session looked at two papers related to Global Agri-Food Industry Competitiveness. Many WERA-72 members have close links to the International Agribusiness Management Association and international research issues. These papers specifically included topics related to price transmission within the Ugandan coffee sector and market segmentation strategies within the Malaysian Halal broiler market.

The third paper session examined Alternative Agri-Food Production Models. Agribusiness and short supply chains continuously evolve and increase the need for economists to evaluate structure and competitiveness of smaller-scale enterprises and strategies for differentiation. These papers looked at small scale produce and pork operations both in terms of scale economies and in terms of seeking strategic position.

The fourth paper session involved papers targeted to the food and beverage markets. Both papers examined price behavior models one on cool climate wines (from the S-1050 group) and one involving energy drinks. The energy drinks paper had a particularly interesting twist involving strategies for involving students in upper-level marketing studies and doing field research.

The fifth research paper session involved two papers related to Agri-Food Policy and Market Analysis. The papers explored policy and market development issues within the Mexican avocado sub-sector and the U.S. apple industry.

Two paper presentations were provided by graduate students. WERA-72 continues to encourage graduate students interested in academic or research careers in agribusiness to not only attend, but participate in the annual meetings.

For a full listing of paper sessions, please see Appendix A.

Eight papers were published in the IFAMR in June 2011, including contributions from WERA-72 and IAMA members.

Part 1: Monday, June 13th

Chair Tim Woods called the meeting to order at 5:14 pm with the Executive Board and 18 members in attendance. Lindsey Higgins, as secretary, is taking the minutes.

- Brent Gloy submitted the a copy of the treasurers report to each member in attendance.
o Brent reports that:
§ We are in a good / adequate financial position
§ Meeting expenses had to be prepaid
" One member said they were coming to the meeting, but backed out at the last minute without paying registration
§ Travel scholarship funds are now exhausted
" Six graduate students came to the meeting for free
§ Concern was raised about the expenses associated with next years meeting at Purdue (Vegas is an inexpensive meeting location)
§ Brent would also like to find someone to fill his position as Treasurer after five years in the position
o Ruby Ward moves to approve the treasurers report
§ Al Wysocki seconds the motion
§ Motion passes and the treasurers report is accepted as submitted
- Brent Gloy discusses the possibility of increasing the meeting registration fees for next years conference, indicating that $200 per person does not go very far and it is tough to provide a meeting with those fees
o Greg Baker suggests authorizing between $200 and $250 as meeting registration fees and makes a motion to move the decision to the Executive Board
§ Al Wysocki seconds the motion, but reminds the membership and board that the goal is not to raise the balance of the organization
" Brent points out that keeping money in the account is important to be able to fund conferences (since many expenses need to be prepaid)
" Al is concerned that the balance doesnt need to go too high
§ It is determined that the costs of having a meeting at Purdue need to be explored and should be communicated with the Executive Board and then setting the appropriate meeting registration fee
o Vote on moving power of setting the meeting registration fees to the Executive Board is taken and the vote passes
- Nominations for the secretary position will be taken tomorrow
o Kerry Litzenberg and Greg Baker to serve as the nominating committee, but self-nominations will also be accepted
o Kerry Litzenberg reminds the membership that this is a regional committee and that serving as a board member is a valuable thing to complete
- Tim Woods calls for further business and both the dates for next years meeting and the location for the 2013 meeting is brought up
o Dates for the 2012 meeting are determined as being June 24th through June 26th
§ Motion to accept the dates is made by Scott Downey and it is seconded by Forrest Stegelin
o Location for the 2013 meeting is brought up as a point of discussion
§ Ruby Ward is happy to host a meeting in Utah, however WAEA is having their meeting in Park City that same year
§ Vegas is suggested as a location and indicated as an inexpensive and easy place to host a meeting
" Vegas has previously been discussed as a location to have the meeting every other year and therefore, it was suggested that we continue with that plan and decide on having the 2013 meeting in Vegas
- Tim Woods asks for further business and seeing none, adjourns the meeting.

Impact Statements

  1. WERA-72 continues to link university research, teaching and extension faculty with government agency personnel and industry leaders. The program at the annual meeting once again included an invited speaker from industry. The WERA-72 leadership has maintained this practice for many years now, and is committed to continuing to use the annual meeting to facilitate these linkages. Furthermore, as agribusiness continues to mature as a field, an important focus in its development is to maintain and develop teaching, research and extension activities that reflect the interest of agribusinesses. WERA-72 will continue to plays an important role in developing such a focus.
  2. As there are few departments that hold a significant concentration of agribusiness faculty, the coordination and communication of agribusiness faculty interests is thereby of importance. It is anticipated that through such communications, it improve the quality and quantity of agribusiness research, teaching and extension that is produced by participating members, as well as fostering integrated and multi-state projects among WERA-72 participants.
  3. WERA-72 continues to facilitate the coordination and development of timely research, extension, and teaching projects among participating faculty, graduate students, government, and industry leaders, creating a pool of shared expertise in general area of agribusiness scholarship. WERA continues to be a critical focal point around the academic relationships to agribusiness. Linkages with other regional research projects (such as S-1050), academic associations (AAEA, IAMA, Food Distribution Research Society), and industry have led to very fruitful collaborations. In addition to help developing a critical mass of agribusiness dialogue and research expertise, WERA-72 has been supportive of graduate student engagement in this field. To encourage greater graduate student engagement, two travel scholarships were offered for this years annual meeting.

Brief Summary of Minutes

Summary of Annual Meeting
Faculty and graduate students from twenty universities, a USDA representative, and an industry executive participated in the 2012 WERA-72 annual meeting, held at Purdue University, June 24th-26th, 2012. The program agenda, business meeting agenda and treasurers report are attached in appendices A, B and C respectively.
Prior to the start of the annual meeting, a pre-conference tour of Fair Oaks Farms (www.fofarms.com) was arranged. Fair Oaks is owned and operated by a group of dairy farming families and is one of the largest dairy operations in the U.S. In addition to the large dairy operation, Fair Oaks also gave the membership an opportunity to explore an alternative agricultural business model that has integrates agricultural production, food processing, education, tourism, and retail in its operations. This tour was attended by 10 WERA-72 members. Following the Fair Oaks Farms Tour, the WERA-72 was invited for an opening reception hosted by the Dean of the College of Agriculture at Purdue University, Jay Akridge.
The annual meeting featured an industry speaker, 5 paper sessions and 2 panel discussions. Drew Ratterman, Market Sell Workforce Leader at Dow AgroSciences was this years invited industry speaker. His presentation examined the current and future deficit of human capital in the agribusiness sector and the implications for agribusiness firms and the economy. His presentation specifically highlighted the challenges that input sector companies have in recruiting new talent, the current and future needs for human capital development, and firm strategies that are being implemented to address these challenges and needs. This was a particularly fitting presentation for the WERA-72 group since the annual meeting was scheduled to precede the Agribusiness Learning Outcomes Meeting.
Following Mr. Rattermans presentation, meeting participants broke out into small groups to discuss that state of agribusiness education and human capital development. The purpose of the discussion groups was also to generate ideas on how agribusiness education could respond to meet the needs of industry. Each group then reported back to the entire group and Mr. Ratterman provided his reaction to the human capital development ideas that were presented. In general, this new format for the meeting was well received and participation was vigorous as many of the membership have teaching appointments at their respective home institutions.
The first paper session was scheduled next. This session included 2 papers related to Produce and Local Food Markets. The papers addressed issues of technology adoption in apple production and the market dynamics of fresh produce in local markets. Both topics areas continue to be of significant interest to the membership.
The second paper session of the meeting focused on marketing and consumer behavior. Three papers were presented during this session, two of which presented applied research on consumer perceptions and behavior towards local foods and packaged produce. The third paper presented a new methodology approach for examining consumer behavior. Marketing and Consumer is another theme that the WERA-72 membership continues to have interest.
International Trade and Markets was the theme of the third paper session. This session included three papers. The first two papers presented applied research studies that examined bioenergy markets in Brazil and evaluated the market opportunity for U.S. exports of sorghum. The third paper introduced an analytical model for trade dispute resolution.

The final session of day 1 of the annual meeting included one presentation on another central topic area for the WEAR-72 membership, agribusiness teaching. In this presentation, the scholars presented their findings of a study of the impact of instruction on students attitudes towards professional sales careers. Given the industry presentation that opened the day, this presentation reinforced the significant employment opportunities for agribusiness graduate (particularly in sales) and was a good way to bring the meeting around full circle for the day.

Day 1 of the WERA-72 annual meeting concluded with the groups business meeting.
These papers looked at small-scale produce and pork operations both in terms of scale economies and in terms of seeking strategic position.

The Agribusiness Learning Outcomes Group Meeting Begins at 3:00pm with registration in the lobby of the Dauch Alumni Center.

About the Agribusiness Learning Outcomes Working Group

The learning outcomes for agribusiness programs have often been the subject of academic research. Boland and Akridge (2004) have described the importance of universities in preparing agribusiness professionals for careers. Lintzenberg and Schneider have assessed the skills required by agribusinesses. Boland, Lehman, and Stroade (2001) went as far as reviewing many agribusiness education programs. A few years ago, faculty at Oregon State, Purdue, Florida, and other institutions recognized the need for developing a common set of learning outcomes that could act as recommendations and comparatives for agribusiness management program leaders and faculty. Such recommendations could combine academic and business perspectives to advise curricular decisions and outcomes of individual programs around the country. The effort involves faculty from several universities, agribusiness management alumni, and participants from industry. The approach was piloted at Colorado State in December of 2011 with faculty from four universities and several representatives of industry involved. The dialogue will continue with a wider, national set of participants at Purdue in conjunction with and immediately following the WERA meetings, with final recommendations to be presented at AAEA in August. The AAEA foundation and industry grants are partially funding this effort. WERA members are welcome to join the Learning Outcomes program, which will immediately follow the WERA meetings.

The meeting will begin with presentations from participating faculty on specific assigned subject areas across three curriculum components of Economics and Policy, Business, and Skills. The report will summarize (a) the number of classroom hours devoted to this subject for various agribusiness programs, (b) the common themes or specific subject matter covered during this classroom time and (c) some proposed learning outcomes that reflect common course content in these classes. A paper prepared by Norbert Wilson will summarize overall program design to identify total number of hours in the major field, prevalence of options, internships and minors.

Impact Statements

  1. WERA72 continues to facilitate the coordination and development of timely research, extension, and teaching projects among participating faculty, graduate students, government, and industry leaders, creating a pool of shared expertise in general area of agribusiness scholarship. WERA continues to be a critical focal point for creating academic relationships to agribusiness. Linkages with other research projects (such as S1050 and Agribusiness Learning Outcomes ), academic associations (AAEA, IAMA, Food Distribution Research Society,), and industry have led to very fruitful collaborations. In addition to help developing a critical mass of agribusiness dialogue and research expertise, WERA72 has been supportive of graduate student engagement in this field.
  2. As there are few departments that hold a significant concentration of agribusiness faculty, the coordination and communication of agribusiness faculty interests is thereby of importance. WERA72 continues maintain and further develop its electronic communication methods, regularly using the organizations listserv to communicate timely announcements, including job postings, research grant opportunities, and calls for paper proposals with an agribusiness focus. Past presentations, abstracts and manuscripts have also been posted on the organizations webpage, providing an institutional depository of past agribusiness scholarship. It is anticipated that through such communications, it improve the quality and quantity of agribusiness research, teaching and extension that is produced by participating members, as well as fostering integrated and multi-state projects among WERA72 participants.
  3. WERA72 continues to link university research, teaching and extension faculty with government agency personnel and industry leaders. The program at the annual meeting once again included an invited speaker from industry. The WERA72 leadership has maintained this practice for many years now, and is committed to continuing to use the annual meeting to facilitate these linkages. For a second year, the WERA72 leadership has arranged an industry tour for the membership to jointly explore significant agribusiness issues in the field.

Brief Summary of Minutes

Brief Summary of Minutes of Annual Meeting:
Faculty from nineteen universities, three graduate students, a USDA representative, and an industry executive participated in the 2013 WERA-72 annual meeting, held at the Excalibur Hotel in Las Vegas on June 9th-11th, 2013. The annual meeting featured an invited industry speaker, five paper sessions, and one panel discussion. The complete program agenda, business meeting agenda, and treasurers report are provided in appendices A, B and C, respectively.
Erin Borror, an economist with the United States Meat Export Federation was this years invited industry speaker. Erin presented a vast amount of information relating to the international markets for red meat. She highlighted supply and demand indicators in China, Japan, Korea, Russia, and the EU. Erin shared her global production forecasts, trade-weighted exchange rates, and insights into the impact of US policy changes, including expanded access to the Japanese market for US beef. Erins discussion of the pork market in China was particularly timely due to the recent announcement that the Hong Kong based company, Shuanghui International Holdings, will be buying Smithfield. Erins presentation fit well with this years WERA meeting and provided a good base for moving into the first series of papers covering research on the global nature of agribusiness.
Following Erins presentation, the meeting progressed into the first of five paper sessions. The first paper session, titled Issues on Global Agri-Food Systems, included three papers ranging from demand for GM foods in South Korea to supply risks in China to the development of a Latin American agribusiness index. Peter Goldsmith presented the first paper via GoToMeeting from the University of Illinois. His presentation highlighted the fact there are 325 million farmers in China and that food travels a relatively long distance within China to reach consumers. Peters research findings suggest that food-purchasing managers in China mitigate quality risk engaging in higher relationships and employing fewer suppliers. The subsequent papers in this session explored risk and behavioral responses in Korea and Latin America and provided the membership with a fruitful area of discussion on global agribusiness.
Following lunch, the meeting moved into the second and third paper sessions, titled Value Added Agriculture and Risk Management in Agri-Food Chains, respectively. The session on value added agriculture included three engaging papers on behavioral responses to winery visits, extension entrepreneurship and food hubs, along with a paper on value added plantains as a way to increase womens self sufficiency in Nigeria. Although each paper was very unique, they each touched on new trends: the developing wine industry in the Appalachian region, food hubs, and micro lending in developing countries. The session on risk management combined papers on producers expectations of postharvest losses in Brazil and the economic impacts of non-infectious diseases in the egg layer industry. Also presented in the third session by Kynda Curtis was a paper using stochastic simulation to analyze decision making under risk for producers selling produce direct or to wholesale markets. Each paper generated some good discussion among membership and seemed to spark genuine interest from the attendees.
Mondays activities concluded with the business meeting, along with a meeting of the executive officers. Details of the business meeting can be found in the official minutes, taken by secretary Lia Nogueira, in Appendix B.
Last years WERA meeting was held jointly with the Agribusiness Learning Outcomes group and Marshall Fraiser brought an Learning Outcomes update to WERA-72 on Tuesday morning. Taking the input from last years industry and faculty participants (several of which were WERA-72 members), the Agribusiness Learning Outcomes group has made progress toward coming up with a common set of learning outcomes for agribusiness programs. Marshalls presentation involved testing a survey that will be later distributed to agribusiness programs across the country. As anticipated, the presentation provided some lively discussion and participation from the WERA-72 attendees regarding teaching objectives and differences between institutions.
The fourth paper session, as well as the panel discussion, covered research and issues relating to teaching. From using sales courses to shape students perspectives about sales careers to using emotion through simulation games to make learning experiences real, and from side by side comparison of teaching pedagogies to attempts to motivate students through designing a more flexible course structure, the enthusiasm and interest for engaging agribusiness students was apparent in the group. The panel presentation gave perspectives from three different institutions (University of Saskatchewan, Cal Poly Pomona, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) on new and emerging ways to engage with students. Teaching agribusiness appears to continue to be of significant interest to the membership.
The final paper session of the meeting included three presentations on biomass and biofuels. The papers, covering a willingness to harvest ag residues, willingness to supply biomass, and distillers grain exports, all complemented each other very well and were a nice conclusion to the 2013 WERA-72 meetings.
Three graduate students, from the University of Illinois and Kansas State University, attended and presented some of their research. WERA-72 continues to encourage graduate students interested in academic or research careers in agribusiness to not only attend, but also participate in the annual meetings.
For a full listing of paper sessions, please see Appendix A.

The WERA-72 treasury is currently held in an account at Purdue University. WERA-72 remains in strong financial condition. At present WERA holds a cash balance of $5,002.31. This balance does not include registrations received or meeting expenses incurred for 2013, other than a $1,000 deposit paid to the Excalibur. Some of the 2012 postings may not have been settled properly and are being reviewed.

The registration fees for this years meeting were set at $250 per person. These fees must cover the expenses associated with paid members. We have received 24 paid registrations for the meeting. The Excalibur raised prices considerably since our last visit. Costs were $187 per person for food and facilities in 2011. Costs were $130.43 in 2012 at Purdue. This year, with as close to the same menus as I could get, costs are almost $307.22 per person. Ive tried to cancel some things and negotiate this down, but service has been terrible. Starting our registration push late made forecasting numbers challenging as well.

The following summarizes my projections and recommendations for WERA-72 going forward.

Projections and Recommendations:
I believe it was decided that the 2014 meeting will again be hosted in Santa Clara. This will likely result in more reasonable costs for food. I propose that registrations be left at $250 for 2014.

As we discuss 2015, I suspect the realities of costs at attractive venues like Las Vegas will have to be realized. If we are to return to Las Vegas, I propose finding another venue, eliminating breakfasts and snacks (food courts are close-by to everything) and only having two lunches. Minimum charges to get facilities free this year were $2500. Two lunches would exceed this for 25 registrants. We could choose not to come to Las Vegas and rotate among campuses, but I would raise the concern about attrition without an attractive venue to periodically broaden interest in the program.

If we return to Las Vegas, I propose that the cost of the program in 2015 be held at $250 for registrations received prior to May 1 and $300 for registrations received on May 1 or after. While the coffers of WERA-72 are not empty, a prudent approach is required in order to continue to be funded appropriately.

Impact Statements

  2. 2. As there are few departments that hold a significant concentration of agribusiness faculty, the coordination and communication of agribusiness faculty interests is thereby of importance. WERA-72 continues to maintain and further develop its electronic communication methods, regularly using the organizations listserv to communicate timely announcements, including job postings, research grant opportunities, and calls for paper proposals with an agribusiness focus. Past presentations have also been posted on the organizations webpage, providing an institutional depository of past agribusiness scholarship. It is anticipated that through such communications, it improve the quality and quantity of agribusiness research, teaching and extension that is produced by participating members, as well as fostering integrated and multi-state projects among WERA-72 participants.
  3. In addition to help developing a critical mass of agribusiness dialogue and research expertise, WERA-72 has been supportive of graduate student engagement in this field and welcomed three graduate students to this years meeting.

Brief Summary of Minutes

Brief Summary of Annual Meeting

Faculty and graduate students from 21 universities gathered in Santa Clara, California to share research on teaching, research, and extension activities in the area of agribusiness. The Program Agenda, Business Meeting Minutes, and Treasurer’s Report are attached below in Appendices A-C.

Once again, WERA-72 hosted an industry speaker, Dan Cortez from Ecopia Farms (http://www.ecopiafarms.com/). Ecopia farms is a relatively new operation that specializes in micro greens that are then sold to high quality restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area. Dan briefly discussed the genesis of the company, their business model, and how they utilize market segmentation to find and service new customers.

The annual meeting featured six paper sessions and one panel discussion. The first paper session focused on the use of technology in the classroom. As classroom technology has evolved considerably in the past 10 years, this pedagogical research was very timely and a lively discussion ensued, as participants are very passionate about their teaching and research. Presenters in this session shared their work on how to engage students in the classroom and their opinions of best practices in teaching topics involving financial statements and financial literacy.

Paper session #2 featured presentations that discussed information literacy, flipped classrooms, and extension approaches to macroeconomics. These presentations shared current research on how skills are transferred within group settings, and how faculty can use the time in the classroom more effectively through ‘flipping’ the class. In a flipped class, students are assigned lectures and readings outside of the class and time in the classroom is devoted to discussion and problem solving. Forrest Stegelin shared his approach to presenting macroeconomic data to extension audiences to ensure that the concepts are more clearly understood. Finally, researchers from the University of Illinois presented their research findings on value creation, a topic that has is continued to be important in the area of agribusiness. From the lively discussion during this session, there were several ideas that faculty can take back to their institutions to apply to their teaching and research activities.

A panel session on how universities should respond to the skills needed in the agribusiness sector provided for an engaging discussion. This panel session was partly a follow-up from a session in the 2012 annual meeting that examined how agribusiness departments address skill gaps between employer needs and graduate training. Participants formed groups to discuss what, if any, agribusiness faculties could take to address this issue.

Current research on short supply chains in horticultural markets was the focus of paper session #3. There were several papers that addressed issues within CSA systems and direct marketing channels that provided insights that were applicable in a variety of geographic settings. Tim Woods, Lia Nogueira and their co-authors also shared their research on factors that affect the purchase of local wines. As the winemaking industry continues to expand beyond its historical boundaries, this research provides valuable insights on factors affecting purchase decisions for these agribusiness firms.

Paper session #4 highlighted current research in the food processing industry. Konduru and his co-authors examined how cap-and-trade policy has impacted food manufacturing in California. As agribusiness firms compete in a dynamic policy environment, this research was both valuable and timely. Jon Phillips presented an interesting case study of the pet food industry in California.

A mix of research conducted by graduate students was presented in paper session #5. Hannah Hallock presented some work from her Master’s thesis on cooperative member satisfaction. As cooperative management and membership may have different perceptions of how the value proposition is communicated and perceived, this work provided for some interesting discussion among attendees. Nichole Busdieker presented some work conducted during her doctoral studies on crop yields and technology. Eric Micheels presented work from Alison Sawka’s Master’s thesis on the appropriateness of a closed-loop value chain in the Canadian Red Lentil industry. In all, this session showed that our graduate student members are well on their way to being leading contributors to the field of agribusiness.

Paper session #6 concluded the meeting, and included research on hunger and the global vegetable oil market. Yasutomo Kojima presented research examining how supply and demand movements in the global vegetable oil market can provide opportunities for strategic planning among agribusiness firm. Greg Baker concluded the session with an interesting presentation on how hunger can be mapped using GIS technologies. These presentations, like many, led to an engaging discussion on the applications of this research to broader goals.

Overall, the research presented at the 2014 meeting generated a high level of discussion that can be used to improve future research.

2014 Treasurer’s Report
WERA – 72
June 30, 2014

Update
The WERA-72 treasury is currently held in an account at Purdue University. WERA-72 remains in strong financial condition. At present WERA holds a cash balance of $8,538.86. This balance includes revenue from one reservation for 2014 that had been received and posted prior to the last statement received on the account.

Last year’s reported balance of $5,002.31 was noted as pending review of posted transactions from the 2012 conference. The 2012 Treasurers report from the prior treasurer indicated a balance of $8,216, which did not reflect the 2012 meeting income expenses, nor complete settlement from 2011. Financial results from the past two meetings are provided below.

The 2012 meetings were held at Purdue concurrent with the “outcomes group” meetings. There were 25 total participants, with 17 of those as paid attendants (others were students and industry guests), for total revenue of $3,840 ($3,400 from registrations for the meeting and $440 for the trip to Fair Oaks). Expenses for the WERA group totaled $3,989.48, for a net loss of $149.48. After posting 2011 and 2012 meeting expenses, the actual WERA balance was $8,750.68.

The 2013 meetings in Las Vegas had 24 paid attendees, for net revenue of $5,750 after credit card fees. Expenses totaled $6199.32. Leaving a balance after the 2013 meetings of $8,301.36. Receipt of one net registration fee of $237.50 for the 2014 meetings brings the total to the current cash balance reported above.

Projections and Recommendations:
There are 29 registrants for this year’s meetings. Four of those are students. Of the remaining, 22 participants took advantage of the early bird registration fee of $250. Three registered after May 1 and paid $300. We will net revenue of $6,120. Expenses for the program are not yet known.

If we are to return to Las Vegas in 2015, I propose a venue other than Excalibur, which was difficult to work with last year. Depending on the venue we may be able to eliminate breakfasts and snacks (food courts are close-by to everything) and only have two lunches. Most venues have minimum charges to get facilities. The Excalibur was $2500. Two lunches would exceed this for 25 registrants. The organization will need to discuss the costs of other hotels versus attractiveness of the venues and its impact on registrations.

If we return to Las Vegas, I propose that the cost of the program in 2015 be held at $250 for registrations received prior to May 1 and $300 for registrations received on May 1 or after, with effort to reduce food costs. While the coffers of WERA-72 are not empty, a prudent approach is required in order to continue to be funded appropriately.

Business Meeting Minutes

Monday June 30, 2014

Chair Eric Micheels called the meeting to order at 4:38 pm. Secretary Marshall Frasier is taking the minutes.

Motion by Phil Kenkel, seconded by Lia Nogueira to approve the agenda for the meeting. Approved unanimously.

Minutes from the 2013 meeting were reviewed. Minutes for 2013 were amended to reflect that the “location selection committee” in New Business item b.ii reflect that the Executive Committee was to serve in this capacity rather than this being a separate committee. Motion by Phil Kenkel, seconded by Scott Downey to approved the amended minutes. Motion passed unanimously.

Treasurer’s Report

Scott Downey summarized the treasurer’s report:
• Current cash balance of $8,538.86 (inclusive of all registration revenue for 2014 meeting but expenses are yet to be determined and paid).
• As agreed last year, registration fee for this year was set at $250 for those registering by May 1 and $300 for those registering later. Twenty three (23) of twenty five (25) fee-paying registrants took advantage of the early bird rate. General agreement of the group to employ the same registration structure for next year.
• Last year it was agreed that participating students would have a reduced registration fee, to be determined by the Executive Committee. This year’s registration fee was fully waived for all student participants presenting papers. This year four students took advantage of the fee waiver. General agreement of the group that we should continue waiving registration fees for student presenters.

Aaron Johnson moved to approve the treasurer’s report, Brent Ross seconded the motion. Motion passed and the treasurer’s report was accepted as submitted.

Old Business

Eric Micheels lead a short discussion of the past year’s successful efforts to renew the WERA-72 project. General appreciation expressed by those present to the Executive Committee for their efforts in developing the documentation necessary for the renewal of the project. Eric Micheels noted that most participants had not yet formally committed to the new project and encouraged formal sign-up of participants at their earliest convenience.
Eric Micheels posed a general question of how we might improve impact of the WERA-72 group, particularly with respect to communications and outreach activities. Discussion ensued identifying the need for a functional and current WERA-72 web site to serve as an accessible repository for business of WERA-72 including participant lists with email contact, agendas, minutes, and visual aid support files (e.g. PowerPoint) for presentations made at the meetings. Forrest Stegelin moved, Ruby Ward seconded, that the Executive team identify an appropriate web site to serve this function in the coming year. Motion passed unanimously.

New Business
• Phil Kenkel nominated Aaron Johnson to serve as secretary in the coming year. Nominations were closed and Aaron Johnson was declared secretary-elect by acclimation.
• Selection of Location and Date for Future Meetings
o Discussion on alternatives for 2015 meetings quickly converged on returning to Las Vegas due to travel convenience. General sentiment was that we should explore venues other than the Excalibur, however. The date of the meeting should again be coordinated to not conflict with the IFAMA annual meeting. Moved by James Sterns, seconded by Forrest Stegelin to meet in Las Vegas with the dates and location to be determined by the Executive Committee. Motion passed unanimously.
o Meeting location for 2016. Moved by Aaron Johnson, seconded by Forrest Stegelin to explore opportunities to hold the 2016 annual meeting in the Denver/Fort Collins area. Marshall Frasier offered to identify a suite of potential tours and/or speakers in the area in advance of the 2015 meeting so that final determination could be made at that time. Motion passed unanimously.

Aaron Johnson made a motion to adjourn the meeting, Marshall Frasier seconded the motion. Chair Eric Micheels adjourned the meeting at 5:15 pm.

Impact Statements

  1. Impact Statements 1. WERA-72 continues to coordinate and communicate university research, teaching and extension faculty with appropriate government agency personnel and industry leaders. The program at the 2014 annual meeting included an invited speaker from industry (Ecopia Farms). With several sessions at the annual meeting devoted to teaching and extension, WERA-72 demonstrates that it remains committed to play an important role in these areas.
  2. 2. As agribusiness faculty remain geographically dispersed, WERA-72 continues to maintain and further develop its electronic communication methods, regularly using the organization?s listserv to communicate timely announcements, including job postings, research grant opportunities, and calls for paper proposals with an agribusiness focus. At the 2014 meeting, the development of a new website was discussed that could convey this information to interested parties. Past presentations have also been posted on the organization?s webpage, providing an institutional depository of past agribusiness scholarship. It is anticipated that through an updated website that is more accessible, the ability to engage with interested stakeholders will improve, thereby leading to deeper linkages with other academic institutions, government agencies, and industry. Moreover, improved communication methods will continue to foster integrated and multi-state projects among WERA-72 participants.
  3. 3. WERA-72 continues to facilitate the coordination and development of timely research, extension, and teaching projects among participating faculty, graduate students, government, and industry leaders, creating a pool of shared expertise in general area of agribusiness scholarship. WERA-72 continues to be a critical focal point around the academic relationships to agribusiness. Linkages with other regional research projects (such as S-1050), academic associations (AAEA, IFAMA, Food Distribution Research Society), and industry have led to very fruitful collaborations. In addition, to help developing a critical mass of agribusiness dialogue and research expertise, WERA-72 has been supportive of graduate student engagement in this field and welcomed three graduate students to this year?s meeting.
