Additional Info

More details will follow as we approach, but for those who need to start planning, please consider that there are several airports within traveling distance including a regional airport in Gainesville, Florida:

GNV – Gainesville -30 min
JAX – Jacksonville – 1:45 min
TPA – Tampa – 2 hr
MCO – Orlando – 1:50 min

We will aim for a morning meeting time to give folks an opportunity for an evening return flight if necessary, so it may be easiest to plan on arriving Thursday, March 2nd. Uber is likely the easiest way to arrive at your hotel from the local airport. A rental may be necessary when arriving at international airports. There are several local hotels and accommodations that are available and I will work on sending those suggestions to you in the near future.

I am also working on an alternative venue close to campus but am unsure of what budget might be available (if any) for a location outside of the department. In the meantime, we are currently scheduled to meet in the Department of Animal Sciences. If an alternative venue close to campus is identified, I will see if some transportation can be arranged.

Some Attractions Close to Gainesville

There are a host of activities and sights in North Central Florida for those who have time in their schedule. The Natural History Museum and Butterfly Museum on campus are fascinating venues. Payne’s Prairie State Park south of town has great views of wildlife, including alligators (go to the Alachua Sink entrance). There are some great lakes for fishing, and boats for that purpose can be rented. The Atlantic beaches and the historic city of St. Augustine are an 1.5 hour drive away. Cedar Key, on the Gulf coast, is also about an hour by car and offers a view of Old Florida and fishing on the pier. You can also swim with manatees in the Crystal River (1.5 hours by car). Of course, you are welcome to tour the Animal Sciences Building and L.E. “Red” Larson Dairy Science Buildings, which are immediately south of Straughn Hall.

Brad

Brad Daigneault, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Department of Animal Sciences
University of Florida
Gainesville, FL 32611
Phone: 352-273-2021
b.daigneault@ufl.edu
