Minutes From North Central Universities...this year meeting jointly with the Northeastern Forest Resource Program Universities Pittsburgh, PA October 25, 2006 Summarized by Margaret (Peg) Gale, Dean School of Forest Resources & Environmental Science, Michigan Tech University The North Central and Northeast regional NAUFRP representatives got together for their annual meetings this year. We discussed whether, now that the North Central and Northeastern Forest Research stations were being combined into one unit (Northern Forest Research Station) that we should combine into one unit. Alan Ek and Dan Keathley both felt that the separate units were a structure based on the land-grant system and not based on Forest Service units and therefore should be kept separate. Some of the Northeast reps mentioned it was hard to get other universities to participate in annual meetings. Others brought out the fact that it may be we are not trying hard enough to bring others to the table or that we may not be having meetings where we have action items or issues to address/solve for our regions and therefore not making worthwhile for them to come to such a meeting. Therefore, it was suggested by Jeff Dawson that, initially, we will have a joint meeting of the two groups (North Central and Northeast) with action items to advance our regions and the disciplines of forestry/natural resources. The meeting will be sometime in late summer 2007, although January was also mentioned. The meeting will be issue-based, possibly summarizing our multi-state projects. We will invite Administrators from Northern Research Station, State & Private Forestry, and regional foresters. Chad Dawson and Peg Gale will work on finding a place and time for this meeting. The goals of such a meeting will be to: (i) promote more projects, collaborations, and communication among the North Central and Northeast Forest Resource Programs/Universities; and (ii) to develop issues we should address in the next year related to our region(s).
