Accomplishments
The electronic version of the "Compendium of Research Reports on Use of Non-Traditional Materials for Crop Production" entered its first full year of availability. (http://extension.agron.iastate.edu/compendium/index.aspx)
During the year, the site received over 2300 visits. This has become the primary means for clientele to access historic information about research conducted on non-traditional products.
The publication SF 1321, "Effectiveness of Gypsum in the North-Central Region of the US", by David Franzen, George Rehm and James Gerwing, was completed in 2006. This publication outlines appropriate uses of gypsum as a soil amendment.
Members of the committee annually share information about new non-traditional products or soil fertility practices which are being marketed in respective states, as well as any new research on such products and practices.
Impacts
- Electronic Compendium: Over 2300 visits were made to the website last year (http://extension.agron.iastate.edu/compendium/index.aspx), indicating information on non-traditional products which has been distributed to clientele.
- Potential Profitability: Many specialized products or non-traditional soil fertility programs cost between $8 and $30/acre/yr. A decision NOT to use a non-traditional product, based on research information provided by the committee, for a typical farm in the North Central region of 800 acres could thus save an individual producer $6400 to $24000/year.
