Accomplishments

Based on identified goals (2020-2023)

  1. Identify and analyze secondary data sources to identify the environmental, social, and financial factors that impact (positive/negative) successful aging in place in rural communities using secondary data.

Objective met. The subset of S1082 members identified the 2011 wave of the American Housing Survey (AHS) as the best dataset to analyze for the first manuscript of the project. It was the best possible dataset to use due to the type of variables present. The subsequent papers also use the American Housing Survey for analysis.

  1. Collect primary data from key informants to identify and analyze environmental, social, and financial factors that impact (positive/negative) successful aging in place in rural communities using primary data.

Objective not met. No effort has been expended on this goal to date (2020-2023) as the group has had ample access to and been able to utilize primary data.

  1. Examine and draft policies and programs that promote successful aging in place in rural communities and encourage inclusive civic participation

Objective not met. No effort has been expended on this goal to date (2020-2023). The group is still building a body of work that may be able to inform policy.

Milestones
Met on a regular basis as a team (at least monthly); was able to submit scholarship in the form of manuscripts.

Impacts

  1. Analysis of the 2019 AHS data is important because of its pre-COVID pandemic era perspective in terms of home modifications and older adults aging in place. Results showed that recent housing modifications were significantly affected by select demographic and housing factors.
  2. Older individuals living in rural areas face unique economic, structural, social, and cultural challenges to aging in place. Demographic and economic characteristics that may increase or decrease the propensity for older adults to make modifications to their dwelling in order to age in place should be explored.
