Accomplishments

Short-term outcomes: Funding from the US Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative was used to develop informative videos on Fusarium head blight. One video compiled interviews highlighting the insight and expertise of NCERA-184 small grain pathologists. A second video was developed featuring an overview of FHB including field footage, 3D disease cycle, and information on management. Both videos will be made available on the Crop Protection Network website.

Outputs: Within participating states, information was shared through multiple platforms including winter meetings, research publications, extension publications, and social media.  Coordinated efforts of this multi-state project enabled data exchange for regional and national recommendations including:

  • Crop Protection Network recommendations for Fungicide Efficacy for Control of Wheat Diseases CPN-3002-W

https://crop-protection-network.s3.amazonaws.com/publications/fungicide-efficacy-for-control-of-wheat-diseases-filename-2019-07-01-160518.pdf

  • Updates to the Fusarium Head Blight forecasting tool http://www.wheatscab.psu.edu/
  • Collection of disease loss estimates from each state that will be shared through the Crop Protection Network

Activities: NCERA 184 works under three primary objectives:

  • Objective 1: Better characterize best management practices for Fusarium Head Blight and leaf diseases in wheat and barley

Current research focuses on integration of moderately-resistant wheat cultivars combined with optimal timing of fungicide applications to develop integrated management options for Fusarium head blight. Work in this objective is part of the multi-state Integrated Management of FHB project funded through the U.S. Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative. Results have indicated the importance of using multiple management strategies to reduce FHB severity and grain DON levels.

  • Objective 2: Conduct fungicide efficacy trials for diseases in small grains

Participants of the NCERA-184 meetings discuss fungicide efficacy results within each state and utilize data to generate national fungicide efficacy recommendations that enable producers to optimize fungicide decisions. Outputs are shared through web-based publications, additional web tools are under development.

  • Objective 3: Improve disease management through forecasting tools

The NCERA-184 Committee coordinates a national level forecasting effort for FHB in wheat. The forecasting system is supported by the USDA-USWBSI and provides daily estimates of disease risk for 30 states. This system supports over 3,200 users and includes the FHB Alert System, which sends timely notifications of disease risk directly to farmers. Over 1,100 users are signed up for the Alert System feature. Participants of NCERA-184 provide individualized commentary for their state through the forecasting system and share model information though extension publications. NCERA 184 participants also provide data to support monitoring of stripe, stem, and leaf rusts.

Milestones: In year 2 (2018-2019) of this 5-year project, research trials continue to enable critical local data that is compiled through NCERA-184 participation for regional and national recommendations on resistant cultivars and fungicide efficacy, while supporting forecasting systems and collection of disease loss estimate data.

Impacts

  1. Diseases in small grains (wheat, malting barley, grain barley, oats, and rye) can greatly affect yield potential and marketability of grain. To facilitate data driven management recommendations, NCERA 184 participants performed research to improve management of FHB, conducted fungicide efficacy trials for economically important foliar diseases, and supported the management and development of forecasting tools. Research results were shared through extension programming (field days, grower meetings, publications, blogs, social media) to maximize grower profits while minimizing adverse economic and environmental impacts of unnecessary, poorly timed, or less efficacious control measures. Nationwide, FHB is one of the most important diseases annually, more than 95% of the users of the FHB forecasting models and FHB Alert System considered the information to be of high or moderate value to their farm or business. User surveys between 2012-2018 indicated the value of the disease forecasting models and the FHB Alert System to be $58 million annually.
