Introduction of W3005 New NIFA Administrative Advisor, Dr. Jinzeng Yang

Jinzeng Yang is from the Department of Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Science, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources  at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. Dr. Yang provided some brief remarks, and concluded with a friendly reminder that we will need to provide a progress report from this meeting within 60 days of the meeting (due date: December 5, 2018)

Updates from W2005 Working Groups

  • W2005 diet quality working group is continuing to make progress on their systematic review and meta-analysis. Diane Tidwell will conduct the meta-analysis for one manuscript. Karen Chapman-Novakofski and Janet Kurzynske are working on the systematic review manuscript.
  • W2005 parenting working group systematic review was presented at Experimental Biology 2016 and the review was concluded with that presentation.

Reports from W3005 Working Groups

Active participants in W3005 are members of one of the two W3005 working groups: Research or Extension.

Summary of Research Group Reports

Emily Tomayko reported on behalf of the research working group. The umbrella review is well underway thanks to Emily’s leadership, Melanie Hingle's collaboration, and group efforts as well as contributions by Ellen Street, Emily’s PhD student, and Carol Howe, research librarian from the University of Arizona. Initial search has been completed and 1800+ abstracts have been screened. Next steps include screening 112 full-text articles, revision of data extraction spreadsheet, and implementation of quality assessment tool. On Friday, group members worked on operationalizing AMSTAR 2, a widely recognized, validated quality assessment tool used to evaluate systematic reviews. Additional work is needed to finalize operationalization of AMSTAR-2 for current review. Emily will invite working group members to move forward as co-authors/contributors.

Summary of Extension Group Reports

Ingrid Adams reported on behalf of the extension working group. The group is working on development of a GRADE-like (quality assessment) system that could be used to evaluate quality of Extension programs and curricula. The group has reviewed the literature for manuscripts describing evaluation tools for Extension and similar programs in terms of quality criteria in order to inform a checklist that could be used to identify higher quality programs. The group identified the WHO Good Practice Appraisal Tool for Obesity Prevention Programmes, Projects, Initiatives, and Interventions as a key evaluation tool.  There is now a database search underway to identify Extension or similar program evaluation tools published between 2011 and the present. Next steps include letters to authors of the Extension programs to obtain the curricula so that the quality assessment can be applied. This will help the group identify the “best” most appropriate programs. Expert input will be solicited using the Delphi process and the tool will be pilot tested.

MILESTONES

Below we review accomplishments toward attainment of each of the 2018 milestones.

(2018): 1. Review criteria for program analysis using GRADE in order to specify all important outcomes prior to completing review of meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and Cooperative Extension programs.

  • Extension Working Group is using WHO Good Practice Appraisal Tool for Obesity Prevention Programmes, Projects, Initiatives, and Interventions.
  • Extension Working Group is reviewing the literature from 2011 (date of WHO tool publication) to 2018 to make sure that there is not a tool that is more appropriate.

(2018): 2. Complete the review of meta-analyses and systematic reviews of obesity prevention programs that include positive caregiver-child relationships, nutrition, and/or physical activity to identify relevant programs.

  • Research Working Group: Umbrella review protocol has been registered with Prospero (ID=CRD42018095360).
  • Research Working Group: More than 1800 abstracts have been screened and 112 full-text articles identified.

(2018): 3. Develop methodology and protocol to survey Cooperative Extension (including EFNEP) obesity prevention programs which include positive caregiver-child relationships, nutrition, and/or physical activity.

  • Extension Working Group: Methodology has been developed and a letter to Cooperative Extension program leaders has been drafted.

(2018): 4. Implement methodology for compiling and organizing data on obesity prevention programs focused on positive caregiver-child relationships, nutrition, and/or physical activity.

  • Research Working Group: Screening tool for full-text systematic reviews and meta-analyses has been developed.
  • Research Working Group: Development of data extraction tool is ongoing.
  • Research Working Group: Operationalization of quality assessment tool is ongoing.
  • Extension Working Group: The WHO Good Practice Appraisal Tool for Obesity Prevention Programmes, Projects, Initiatives, and Interventions will be implemented unless a better tool is identified.
