Accomplishments

A.  Collaborative studies

      1.  Phytase super-dosing project coordinated by Marcia Shannon will be completed with the manuscript being finished by the middle of 2018.

      2.  Swine intestinal microbiome project, initiated and coordinated by Phil Miller, will be continued with protein source evaluation in weanling pigs.

      3.  Bakery meal project (initiated and coordinated by Hans Stein) is basically finished and manuscript preparation is almost done.

      4.  Bakery meal digestibility study in growing pigs (coordinated by Hans Stein) was initiated and will be continued.

      5.  Ca and P project (a new project) was initiated and will be coordinated by Hans Stein.

B.  Met jointly with the Southern Regional Sow Nutrition Committee (S-1061) to discuss research topics of common interest.

C.  Obtained updates from NIFA (Dr. Charlotte Kirk-Baer), including information on the National Animal Nutrition Program.

D.  Representatives from the American Feed Industry Association (Dr. Kevin Touchette), Ajinomoto Co., Inc. (Dr. Kevin Touchette), and National Pork Board (Dr. Chris Hostetler) provided a lot of input on research priorities in the feed and swine industries.

Impacts

  1. Coordinated research projects among participating experiment stations using common protocols.
  2. Provided essential opportunities for communication and coordination among swine nutritionists at Land Grant Universities, leading not only to joint NCCC-42 projects, but other collaborations as well.
  3. Met annually with S-1061 since 2006 to exchange information and ideas and to collaborate on various projects.
  4. Invited the National Program Leader – Animal Production Systems – USDA-National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) to update current research, education, and Extension priorities.
  5. Several committee members are engaged as leaders in the National Animal Nutrition Program (NRSP-9).
  6. Almost all members are active in the American Society of Animal Science (e.g., serving in the Editorial Board of the Journal of Animal Science) and in regional and national meetings as speakers and program coordinators.
