Impacts

  1. 1. One impact of this multi-state group includes publishing and co-editing books that are relevant to the cornerstone of our project, which includes examining food security in a global environment. For example, project member Kwan Choi (Iowa State University) is an editor of the Book Series: Frontiers of Economics and Globalization. project members Lynn Kennedy (LSU) and Andrew Schmitz (University of Florida) have served as co-editors of Volume 16 and 17 of this book series: Schmitz, A., Kennedy, P.L., Schmitz, T.G. (Editors), (2016). World Agricultural Resources and Food Security. Volume 17, Frontiers of Economics and Globalization. Bingley, UK: Emerald Group Publishing Limited. Schmitz, A., Kennedy, P.L., Schmitz, T.G. (Editors), (2016). Food Security in a Food Abundant World: An Individual Country Perspective. Volume 16, Frontiers of Economics and Globalization. Bingley, UK: Emerald Group Publishing Limited. Project members Karen DeLong (University of Tennessee), Lynn Kennedy (Louisiana State University) and Andrew Schmitz (University of Florida) published a book chapter in Volume 17 of this book series: Kennedy, P.L., K.E. Lewis, and A. Schmitz. 2017. “Food Security through Biotechnology: The Case of Genetically Modified Sugar Beets in the United States.” In World Agricultural Resources and Food Security, Schmitz, A., P.L. Kennedy, T.G. Schmitz (Eds.), Volume 17, Frontiers of Economics and Globalization. Bingley, UK: Emerald Group Publishing Limited.
  2. 2. Project members Luis Ribera and Flynn Adcock (Texas A&M) have had an impact on the examination of US trade with Brazil. They currently have the project, Brazil at 2040, funded by Emerging Markets Program, FAS/USDA – a 2-year project to examine Brazil as a market for U.S. agricultural and food products and as a competitor for same in global markets. Project group members have taken five trips to Brazil to speak with various governmental, association, and private sector staff regarding market potential, productive capacity, infrastructure, policy, and outlook. Now in 2nd year of project during which the information gathered will be developed into a paper to address the objectives. Final results will begin dissemination in May 2018. Collaborators from this project are from FAS Brazil, AMS, and ERS.
  3. 3. Project members Edward Yu (University of Tennessee) and Karen DeLong (University of Tennessee) have two articles under review regarding distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS). The first article examines the use of US DDGs exports using a gravity model. The second article examines incorporating DDGS in feed rations of growing and finishing swine in Argentina. The lead author of these papers is Edward Yu’s former graduate student, Maria Celeste De Mattis. She presented her research at our Spring 2016 project and based on the group’s feedback was able to submit these articles for publication. The impact is to bring knowledge to the area of DDGs globally and in Argentina.
  4. 4. Project members Jared Whistance (University of Missouri), Wyatt Thompson (University of Missouri), and William Meyers (University of Missouri) have made impacts by running baseline commodity models. This impact assists policy makers and economists predict commodity supply. For example, FAPRI-MU and collaborators develop multi-year projections of main agricultural commodity and biofuel markets. These projections span selected international markets, including for grains, oilseeds, and biofuels, as well as US trade. o Baseline projection schedule has changed relative to past years : o January 2017 deterministic projections with 10-year outlook for agricultural commodity and biofuel markets that represents conditions in the U.S. and other major producing and consuming countries o March 2017 stochastic projections with 10-year outlook based on 500 Monte Carlo simulations, focused on biofuel and agricultural commodity markets of the U.S., including trade o August 2014 5-year deterministic projections using latest data, including new crop area and yield estimates, for agricultural commodity and biofuel markets that represents conditions in the U.S. and other major producing and consuming countries
