Accomplishments
A. Collaborative studies
1. Completed phytase super-dosing project (coordinated by Marcia Shannon); manuscript preparation progressing with draft to be completed by April 2017.
2. Continuing work on bakery by-product variation study (coordinated by Hans Stein); sample analyses ongoing and manuscript preparations have begun.
3. Initiated bakery meal digestibility study in growing pigs (coordinated by Hans Stein).
4. Initiated microbiome and protein source evaluation in weanling pigs (coordinated by Phil Miller).
B. Met jointly with the Southern Regional Sow Nutrition Committee (S1061) to discuss research topics of common interest.
C. Obtained updates from NIFA (Dr. Charlotte Kirk-Baer), including information on the National Animal Nutrition Program.
D. Representatives from the American Feed Industry Association (Drs. Kevin Touchette and Henry Turlington) and National Pork Board (Dr. Chris Hostetler) provided input on research priorities in the feed industry. Additionally, Dr. Ron Nimmo discussed the newly-implemented Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) rule and what influence it will have on collective industries.
Impacts
- Coordinated research studies among participating stations using common protocols.
- Provided essential opportunity for communication and coordination among swine nutritionists at Land Grant Universities, leading not only to joint NCCC42 projects, but other collaborations as well.
- Met annually with S1061 since 2006 to exchange information and ideas and collaborate on projects.
- Invited the National Program Leader – Animal Production Systems – USDA-National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) to discuss current research, education, and extension priorities.
- Several committee members are engaged as leaders in the National Animal Nutrition Program (NRSP-9).
- Almost all members are active in the American Society of Animal Science Editorial Board and in regional and national meetings as speakers and program coordinators.
