Accomplishments

Accomplishments

  • Short-term Outcomes: Short-term outcomes include cooperative efforts in developing publications and programs for turfgrass water conservation. Several states have published BMPs related to water management and sustainability for golf courses and lawn care operators. All institutions will continue ongoing collaborative efforts on the impact turfgrass has on water quality.

Outputs: Specific Outputs: (a) data and results exchange, new technologies and

  • tools for researchers and stakeholders, and successful outreach mechanisms, (b) building collaborative research projects, and (c) inclusion of programs.
  • Specific topics in which these outputs occur include but are not limited to: (a) evaluated and characterized the cold hardiness, drought tolerance, environmental competitiveness, and aesthetics of experimental and standard bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, and St. Augustinegrass cultivars, (b) adoption of the use of the New World Soil Survey, USDA/WoodEnd Soil Health Toolkit, (c) stakeholder interest increase in on the use of organic and or natural products requires a need for educating stakeholders on what these products are and their use, (d) soil fertility and turf nutrition, (e) landscape professional certification programs, (f) prevention and recovery options from winter damage, including a winterkill prediction models, (g) observations of certain weeds, insects, diseases and nematodes and their prevalence with certain environmental factors and turf management strategies, as well as prevention and control mechanisms, (h) management strategies for water protection and conservation (quality and quantity) for stakeholders and the environment, (i) soil health, and (f) safe playing surfaces.
  • Activities: Activities among colleagues include participation in collaborative research trials, cultivar evaluations, graduate student training, guest lecturing, participation in field days turf conferences, mini workshops, joint PIs and subcontractors on grants, authorship on peer reviewed and extension publications, and academic service. Milestones: Prior to the 2015 meetings, colleagues will collaborate on all topics mentioned in the outputs section.
  • Milestones: Outputs and activities have resulted in the following impacts (a) enhanced aesthetics and utility of turfgrass systems; (b) sustain natural resources including reducing potable water consumption, protect water quality and increasing soil health, (c) and increase the quality of life for sod growers, golf course superintendents, sportsfield managers, landscape professionals and other turfgrass managers, as well as all the people who enjoy recreating on turfgrass. Sustainability projects reduce the total amounts of fertilizerspesticides and other chemicals applied and minimize runoff and leaching into local surface and ground water. The publication of BMP manuals will provide a science-based resource to help guide legislators and state regulators in formulating laws and regulations governing water and fertilizer use on turfgrass. Weed science projects will improve weed management programs and reduce the potential of resistant species. As a result of breeding and molecular collaboration, multiple institutions within this SERA were awarded a five-year SCRI grant to investigate improved cultivar traits and evaluate germplasm over a larger geographic and climatic area.
    •
