SAES-422 Multistate Research Activity Accomplishments Report

Status: Approved

Basic Information

Participants

Present: John Bernhardt, University of Arkansas; Luis Espino, University of California Cooperative Extension; Natalie Hummel, Louisiana State University; Michael Stout, Louisiana State University; Kelly Tindall, University of Missouri; Michael Way, Texas A&M University; Administrator: An administrator was not present during the meeting because there was confusion on the administration side. Our last administrator no longer works for USDA.

Previous business: none Future of project: Participants decided that the project as it is currently defined will not go on. But there were some requests to start an Information Exchange Group (IEG) or informal meetings. One of the issues is that since there is no financial support for an IEG, there is no incentive to write a proposal. To constitute an IEG, a document similar to a regional project proposal is needed but with specific goals, with little emphasis on research, and more emphasis on extension and other disciplines. Some examples of other groups that meet in a regular basis were given. Meeting informally during the Rice Technical Working Group (RTWG) meeting is another option, but there are advantages to meeting every year. However, not everyone in the group thinks they can attend an informal meeting every year. Another option is to submit the project later on. Finally, the group agreed to meet at the next RTWG meeting in Arkansas and decide then what we want to do. Application for RTWG's Distinguished Achievement Award Michael Way proposed to nominate the group for the Distinguished Service Award. The nomination will include all current participants. Mike Stout and Michael Way will look into it. Probably will be due by next fall. Deregulation of panicle rice mite (PRM) TX and LA want to have the PRM deregulated so research can be done. Deregulation may be achieved on a state by state basis. Other mites have been found in LA (Schizotetranychus spp.); it might be considered a new species. The identification of PRM in AR has been questioned. There is no consensus among states in deregulation. Publication of rice water weevil (RWW) review on the Journal of Integrated Pest Management (JIPM) CA will be preparing a RWW review for the JIPM; the focus might be regional or including all the US. Authors will send for review to other states. Research needs There is a concern regarding the reasons why the RWW causes yield reductions in some states/areas, but not in others. This might require more basic and coordinated research. Interest in use of mycorrhiza for RWW management. State reports CA TX - Issues with fungicide treatments with Cruiser Max in hybrid seed. Cruiser Max comes with a fungicide too, so there is over application of fungicide when planting hybrids. US Rice Producers Association (Rice Advocate) need article contributions. Contact is Veronica Vargas. Articles should be 500-1000 words. Work in stem borers - need a grad student to look into relationship between feeding signs and white head production Education kit prepared for youth outreach available. LA Natalie Hummel Demonstration plots - yields not reported because there is too much variability and yields do not reflect control. Blog - used for customize extension meetings and articles for magazines, linked to Tweeter and Facebook and other social media. Discussion about the use of blogs, social media - situation about University and encouragement of use of these new technologies. Michael Stout Belay less toxic to crayfish - good fit for LA. RSB - resistance study will be repeated. California will send M. Stout some M-206 to include in rice stink bug. AR Risk of resistance development due to low application rates of thiamethoxam at lower seeding rates MO
