Old Business:
Chairman Crews requested that other old business be brought forward. No old business was presented to the meeting floor.
New business:
Chairman Crews and Dr. Spangler solicited proposed changes to the current objectives of the project narrative of NCERA-199. The committee as a whole developed ideas based on the needs of the beef industry and foreseeable challenges related to methodology and producer education. A list of focus areas was developed.
Chairman Crews requested that the committee members review the suggested additions and changes to the project narrative in preparation for renewal and requested volunteers to lead the writing of the renewal. Committee members Bormann and Spangler volunteered. Chairman Crews opened nominations from the floor for the chair position. Dr. Ignacy Misztal (University of Georgia) was nominated by Dr. Dorian Garrick but declined nomination due to an upcoming sabbatical. Dr. Misztal indicated that he would be willing to serve in this capacity in 2012. Dr. Garrick then nominated Dr. Robert Williams (American International Charolais Association). The motion was seconded by and adopted by acclamation.
Chairman Crews then called for nominations from the floor for the position of secretary. Dr. Larry Kuehn was nominated and was carried unanimously. Chair-elect Dr. Williams proposed the next annual meeting be held in Kansas City, MO.
Chairman Crews called for other new business to be brought forward. No other new business was presented to the meeting floor.
The meeting was adjourned at 11 AM.
Accomplishments
NCERA-199 2009 Accomplishments
Accomplishments:
The 2010 annual meeting of the NCERA-199 group was held October 21-22, 2010 in Fort Collins, Colorado. The NCERA-199 morning session featured speakers from breed associations and allied industry centered on upcoming challenges related to predicting genetic merit of beef cattle. Speakers included Dr. Wade Shafer and Dr. Lauren Hyde (American Simmental Association), Dr. Sally Northcutt (American Angus Association), and Dr. Kent Andersen (Pfizer Animal Genetics). Following the presentations the morning speakers formed a panel for question and answer from the rest of the committee members. In the afternoon committee members Spangler, Misztal, and Kuehn gave presentations centered on different aspects of including genomic information into breeding value predictions and proposed methods of validation. The following day, Dr. Mark Enns reported on the online graduate course modules offered by the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium (NBCEC) and funded by the Higher Education Challenge Grant Program in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service, and began in August 2007.
Committee members continue to host the Brown Bagger series presented by the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium. The series is designed as a train-the-trainer curriculum and reaches educators, state and regional extension personnel and producers across the country. The series provides timely research based information in the areas of quantitative genetics, breeding systems, molecular genetics and selection system implementation issues. In 2010, 5 sessions were held with approximately 75 participants per session, an increase of over 25 participants from 2009. Members of the committee also planned and conducted a two-day symposium on the current status of molecular based selection in the beef industry in Clay Center Nebraska. The proceedings of this symposium, in the form of seven fact sheets, are available on the University of Nebraska Beef Production website.
The National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium, which is led by members of this committee, has developed a number of multi-institution teams designed to collect and analyze data to address a number of distinct research needs in the area of beef cattle genetics. These teams have been extramurally funded and are investigating the quantitative and molecular genetic aspects of disease resistance, fatty acid and mineral composition of beef products, heifer fertility, cow longevity and adaptation, and a project centered on the integration of molecular information into National Cattle Evaluations (NCE) that engages over twenty beef cattle producers from six states serving as a truly integrated (research and extension) project. This project as built an extensive repository of DNA samples. Members of this committee along with the NBCEC have developed a working group focused on feed intake and measures of efficiency as well. In total committee members participated in three USDA Feed Efficiency grants that were submitted during the summer of 2010. Further, the NBCEC has planned a two-day workshop centered on issues related to successful and seamless integration of genomic data into NCE. Members of this committee served as the planning committee for this event and as speakers.
Impacts
- Genetic evaluations for multiple breed associations were provided and software and methodology for genomic enabled selection tools developed. A web-based platform for the analysis of genomic data that is freely available was developed. The education of extension professionals across the US was improved through the NBCEC Brown Bagger series, a series of other symposia and integrated research projects. Eight graduate online courses in animal breeding and genetics were offered, with over 60 students from 23 universities.
