Old Business: Refamiliarize the group with the objectives of the renewal of the SERA-IEG 25 project. They are; 1. Coordinate regional efforts in research and extension activities focused on improved Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Water Conservation throughout the region. 2. Develop a subgroup within this SERA group to identify plant material for resource conservation and environmental enhancement. Cultivars from U.S. turfgrass seed producers would be evaluated on a regional basis on a fee basis to fund individual state research efforts. Data from these evaluations would be combined in multi-state extension and research publications for dissemination throughout the region. 3. Reduction of herbicide inputs while maximizing weed control efficacy through implementation of cultural / sustainable management practices. 4. Evaluate the environmental fate (runoff, leaching, and volatilization) of nitrogen and pesticide inputs into the turfgrass ecosystem with a goal of reduced off site movement. These objectives were a focus of the 2010 program which facilitated discussion and opportunities for collaborative projects. Actions and Action Items: Standardization of State Reports Kopec introduced a standardized form used by the Western Regional Turfgrass Research Group for consideration of the SERA-IEG 25. Waltz will reformat the form for SERA-IEG 25 and distribute to the State representatives via email post conference. Invitation of Other Institutions Waltz suggested including Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) in the SERA-IEG 25. ABAC is now offering a 4 year degree in Turfgrass Management. Other state representatives may consider offering the invitation to similar institutions within their state. 2011 Site Selection F. Yelverton lead discussion on holding the 2011 meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He also volunteered to look into accommodations, timing, activities, and logistics of meeting in Puerto Rico. Arkansas volunteered to serve as the secondary site in the event Puerto Rico is prohibitive. NTEP Representative nominations were taken to replace M. Richardson as the SERA-IEG representative to the NTEP Advisory Board. Individuals forwarded for election were Jeffery Beasley (Louisiana State Univ. Agricultural Center), Doug Karcher (Univ. of Arkansas), Edzard Van santen (Auburn Univ.). Ervin will send state representative a ballot via email post conference. Karcher was elected as SERA-IEG 25 NTEP representative. MSMA Letter of Support McElroy lead discussion regarding the status of MSMA and the potential impact of the impending loss of its EPA registration. Yelverton suggested the SERA-IEG 25 draft a letter to the registrants of MSMA encouraging them to continue to pursue reregistration. The group agreed to support a letter. Yelverton will work with the other weed scientists and G. Munshaw, incoming chair, in developing the letter. Election of Secretary nominations were accepted for Secretary, David Han (Auburn Univ.) was nominated, accepted the nomination, and approved by unanimous vote. Considerations for 2011 Meeting: Approval of 2008 Minutes minutes were not approved in 2010 Approval of 2010 Minutes

Accomplishments

SERA-IEG 25 (Turf) has accomplished its objectives by meeting three of every four years at one of the institutions with turf programs in the southern region. There are no annual meetings every fourth year, when many faculty attend an international turf meeting. Participants have exchanged information regarding research, extension, and academic topics. The general approach has been to identify timely and important research or extension topics or techniques each year this meeting is held. Scientists critically review, summarize, and lead a discussion on an individual topic, which was accomplished during days 2 and 3 (see summary and agenda). Outcomes: Short-term outcomes include cooperative efforts in developing publications and programs for turfgrass water conservation. North Carolina State University has published a water management BMP scorecard specific to golf courses, other institutions will assist to ground truth a residential scorecard. Several institutions will continue ongoing collaborative efforts on the impact turfgrass has on water quality. Also, the weed scientists will develop a letter encouraging the registrants of MSMA to continue development of a data package for the reregistration of this herbicide. Breeders will continue cooperative development of new germplasm, a process formalized with the award of a Specialty Crop Research Initiative grant. Outputs: Sharing of data, collaborative research projects, and inclusion of programs are examples of specific outputs. Researchers have evaluated and characterized the cold hardiness and environmental competitiveness of new and standard bermudagrass cultivars. This work has resulted in the recommendation of 'Patriot' and 'Riviera' as primary cultivars in cool-climate areas of the region. These collaborations have resulted in four refereed journal articles, eight trade journal articles and over 20 extension presentations, the superior cold hardiness, disease tolerance, and wear recovery properties of these new cultivars were documented. Additionally, research evaluating covers for winter protection of golf greens has resulted in enhanced survival of bermudagrass from low temperature stress. Weed science studies at numerous institutions are ongoing and will result in the identification of improved herbicide compounds for turfgrass weed control. A wide range of research topics are being investigated including: herbicide efficacy at reduced rates, alteration of application timing to provide improved control with reduced rates, and screening of herbicides for reduced phytotoxicity on bermudagrass cultivars. These studies will be demonstrated at field days. Nearly all locations within the region have been active and will continue to be active, primarily through the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP), in evaluating new cultivars of commonly used warm- and cool-season grasses in an effort to identify germplasm with improved quality and persistence. Activities: Activities among colleagues include participation in collaborative research trials, cultivar evaluations, graduate student training, guest lecturing, participation in field days and turf conferences, joint and subcontractors on grants, authorship on peer reviewed and extension publications, and academic service. Milestones: Prior to the 2011 meetings, colleagues will collaborate on water management, cultivar development and evaluation, and environmental enhancement projects to improve water conservation, genetic traits, and mitigate environmental impacts.

Impacts

  1. Particularly with water, collaborative projects will reduce the overall use of water resources and improve water use efficiency in turfgrass ecosystems. Weed science projects will improve weed management programs and reduce the potential of resistant species. As a result of breeding and molecular collaboration, multiple institutions within this SERA were awarded a five-year SCRI grant to investigate improved cultivar traits and evaluate germplasm over a larger geographic and climatic area.
