Outcomes: Short-term outcomes include cooperative efforts in developing publications and programs for turfgrass water conservation. Several states have published BMPs related to water management and sustainability for golf courses and lawn care operators. All institutions will continue ongoing collaborative efforts on the impact turfgrass has on water quality. Also, the weed scientists wrote a letter encouraging the registrants of MSMA to continue development of a data package for the reregistration of this herbicide. Breeders continue cooperative development of new germplasm, a process formalized with the award of a Specialty Crop Research Initiative grant.
Outputs: Sharing of data, collaborative research projects, and inclusion of programs are examples of specific outputs. Researchers have evaluated and characterized the cold hardiness and environmental competitiveness of new and standard bermudagrass cultivars. This work has resulted in the recommendation of 'Patriot' and 'Riviera' as primary cultivars in cool-climate areas of the region. Ongoing work on the suitability of new bermudagrass varieties such as Celebration and TifGrand for athletic fields has resulted in field day demonstrations and new recommendations for the care of these cultivars. These collaborations have resulted in four refereed journal articles, eight trade journal articles and over 20 extension presentations, the superior cold hardiness, disease tolerance, and wear recovery properties of these new cultivars were documented. Additionally, research evaluating covers for winter protection of golf greens has resulted in enhanced survival of bermudagrass from low temperature stress. Weed science studies at numerous institutions are ongoing and will result in the identification of improved herbicide compounds for turfgrass weed control, particularly new recommendations for timing herbicide applications to control dallisgrass in home lawns with the loss of MSMA for those sites. A wide range of research topics are being investigated including: herbicide efficacy at reduced rates, alteration of application timing to provide improved control with reduced rates, and screening of herbicides for reduced phytotoxicity on bermudagrass cultivars. These studies will be demonstrated at field days. Nearly all locations within the region have been active and will continue to be active, primarily through the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP), in evaluating new cultivars of commonly used warm- and cool-season grasses in an effort to identify germplasm with improved quality and persistence.
Activities: Activities among colleagues include participation in collaborative research trials, cultivar evaluations, graduate student training, guest lecturing, participation in field days and turf conferences, joint and subcontractors on grants, authorship on peer reviewed and extension publications, and academic service. Milestones: Prior to the 2014 meetings, colleagues will collaborate on water management, cultivar development and evaluation, and environmental enhancement projects to improve water conservation, genetic traits, and mitigate environmental impacts.
SERA-25 (Turf) has three objectives:
1. Foster exchange of information on current research and extension activities and discuss future directions and needs for turf programs in the region.
2. Encourage exchange of information on research/extension methodologies and technologies.
3. Promote cooperative efforts among turf programs in the region.
The SERA-25 IEG-16 (Turf) group accomplishes its objectives by meeting three of every four years at one of the institutions with turf programs in the southern region. There are no annual meetings every fourth year, when many faculty attend the International Turfgrass Society meetings. The last meeting was in June 2012 and the next scheduled meeting is in 2014. Participants have exchanged information regarding research, extension, and academic topics. The general approach has been to identify timely and important research or extension topics or techniques each year this meeting is held. Scientists critically review, summarize, and lead a discussion on topics of interest to the group during the two days of the meeting (agenda and business meeting minutes attached).
- Particularly with water, collaborative projects will reduce the overall use of water resources and improve water use efficiency in turfgrass ecosystems.
- Sustainability projects will reduce the total amounts of fertilizers and amendments applied and minimize runoff and leaching into local surface and ground water.
- The publication of BMP manuals will provide a science-based resource to help guide legislators and state regulators in formulating laws and regulations governing water and fertilizer use on turfgrass.
- Weed science projects will improve weed management programs and reduce the potential of resistant species.
- As a result of breeding and molecular collaboration, multiple institutions within this SERA were awarded a five-year SCRI grant to investigate improved cultivar traits and evaluate germplasm over a larger geographic and climatic area.
