The meeting began with a business session where the nominating committee was selected. This was followed with a presentation by Dr. Julie Caswell, Food Safety, What is the Economists Value Added. The presentation was very informative and addressed many key issues surrounding food safety today.
The first paper session included topics about consumer food safety behavior. Wendy Umberger, Colorado State University, presented her work on characteristics affecting consumer perceptions and preference for U.S. labeled beef. This was followed by Lynn Hunnicutt of Utah State, who presented the results of a survey conducted to determine consumer views on the safety aspects of various characteristics of produce.
The second paper session dealt with industry food safety actions with a paper presented by Susan Hine of Colorado State University, Employees and Food Safety: Is Training Im0ortant to Food Service Managers? The next paper in this session was Food Safety Risk Perception Gap between Consumers and Processors of Specialty Meats presented by Willaim Nganje of North Dakota State. The last paper in the session, Analysis of Strategic Marketing Decisions for Organic Ag Producers, was presented by Jon Phillips of Cal Poly, Pomona.
In first session of the afternoon, Tony Crooks of the Rural Business Cooperative Services, presented a 2002 study completed on the challenges facing agricultural cooperatives in the 21st century. This was followed by two papers: Karl Meilke, University of Guelph, presented a paper on Modeling Bio-terrorism in the Agrifood Sector. This was followed by a presentation by Greg Baker, Santa Clara, on a study that he conducted on Factors Affecting Consumer Response to Low Probability Food Safety Risks. This was followed by a cash bar, which concluded this days events.
Day two started with a business session where the new secretary for next year was elected. Next years officers will include: Sue Hine as chair, Cheryl Wachenheim vice chair, Ruby Ward will be the new secretary and Al Wysocki will continue on as treasurer. Al presented the treasurers report, which showed that we are operating with a small surplus and we should be in good shape for next year. The minutes for the 2002 meeting were then approved.
Next, Charlie Hall discussed the need to complete an annual report in order to maintain funding for this committee. All members were requested to submit any work (including collaboration with other members) to be included the report. He will complete this report (with the assistance of Sue Hine) before leaving his duties as chair. The members of the committee all expressed their thanks to Al Wysocki for his continued work as treasurer and web master. Glen Whipple then gave his report as the regional director for this committee and stated that he has been very impressed with the group as a whole and enjoys attending our meetings. A date was then set for next year, June 7-9, at the Boardwalk once again.
Accomplishments
Expanded the coordination of WCC-72, NCR-224, and S-222 by having joint annual meetings, paper presentations, and research project planning.
Third year of a successful competitive, blind-review paper selection process for papers to be presented at the annual meeting.
Successful implementation of an active WCC-72 website (site is located at https://webct.ufl.edu:9030/public/WCC72/index.html and maintained by Dr. Al Wysocki at the University of Florida).
Increased the participation in WCC-72 by including 1890 and private schools in all correspondence, access to website across other committees, and inviting more senior professors, outside stakeholders, and international participants.
Took a more active approach in integrating Extension educational programming and corresponding outreach functions within the scope of WCC-72.
WCC-72 has been valuable as an outlet for research and as a networking group for testing and improvement of teaching tools such as the agribusiness simulation entitled "ProStar" which was developed at Illinois State University.
Impacts
- Enhanced the coordinating function of the Committee by creating linkages with other Multi-state Committees
- Created a dialogue about Agribusiness as a sub-discipline including research methodology, PhD curriculum, Extension educational programming.
- Broadened the participation in WCC-72 by including 1890 and private schools in correspondence, access to website across other committees, more senior professors, outside stakeholders, and internationally.
- Continued the practice begun in 2001 of a blind review, competitive process for selected papers presented at the annual meeting.
- Continued the momentum of strategic planning sessions of recent years regarding the development of agribusiness as a sub-discipline within the agricultural economics arena.
