Accomplishments

The 2007 annual meeting of NCERA-199: Implementation and Strategies for National Beef Cattle Genetic Evaluation took place on October 26-27 at Montana State University, Bozeman, MT. Scientists involved in beef cattle quantitative genetics research reported on work that has been done in the previous year, and new ideas that will be research in the future. Committee members received a Challenge grant to develop online graduate education modules. Various other members have volunteered to serve as reviewers for the modules. Committee members hosted and presented in the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortiums brown bagger series. This online presentation series reaches educators, extension personnel, and producers across the country and discusses timely issues in beef cattle breeding. The National Beef Cattle consortium, which is led by members of this committee, has started to develop multi-institution teams that will collect and analyze data for specific problems related to beef breeding. DNA and phenotypes will be collected and stored for future use by beef cattle genetics researchers.

Impacts

  1. The prototype for multi-breed cattle evaluation is being run at Georgia. When fully developed and released, this will allow cattle producers to compare bulls from different breeds and crossbred bulls to each other.
  2. A symposium about the genetics of animal health was held in December in Kansas City. Despite the large economic impact of animal health for producers, little work has been done to determine the genetic basis of animal health traits. This conference was a forum to allow exchange of ideas and planning for future research.
