Statement of Issues and Justification

Project's Primary Website is at http://sera-ieg-14.tamu.edu/ (direct link can be found under LINKS)

The recent growth in the grape and wine industry throughout the South has resulted in increased interest and participation in SERA-IEG-14. Currently the number of wineries in the Southern Region are as follows: AL 4; AR 5; FL 10; GA 17; KY 7; LA 5; MS 1; NC 21; OK 16; SC 2; TN 21; TX 36; and VA 43. In addition to the production of grapes and value-added products, the establishment of new wineries has been recognized as an important contributor to new tourism interest in many states of the region. The Group is the only organized entity addressing these objectives in the region. While good and valuable research can and is being done individually in each of the states, it is important for researchers and Extension personnel to cooperate to share ideas, findings and mechanisms for efficient and effective information and technology transfer. Colleagues are an important and constructively critical sounding board for each other. This Information Exchange Group is an efficacious vehicle for such interaction. The benefit and impact is successful accomplishment and fulfillment of the objectives listed in Heading D below in an efficient, cost-effective and timely manner. The stakeholders include the participants, their member institutions, grape growers and wine makers in the Southern Region, producers of value-added products in the region, tourists in the region, and all of the consumers of the region.

Objectives

  1. To breed, develop, and evaluate Vitis genotypes and selections over a wide range of environments encountered throughtout the Southern Region and to develop cultural practices directed towards the commercialization of viticulture in the Southeastern United States.
  2. To develop and evaluate Vitis species for fresh market produce along with processed products such as juice, jelly, wine, etc.
  3. To exchange information with scientists working on Vitis species and make the information available to growers throughtout the Southeastern United States.
  4. Provide extensive ans intensive research and Extension materials concentrating on Muscadines, already an important regional grape, but with the potential to play an even more important role in the grape and wine activities of the Region Outputs: A regional muscadine cultivar publication, covering both yeilds and quality; a cataloging of all relevant information with the goal of making that information readily available to all stakeholders Target Date 6/30/2008
