Meeting Agenda & Actions:
1. Welcome and Introductions - Howard Schwartz
2. IYSV & Thrips Highlights - meeting participants discussed the 2006 NARC Symposium at College Station, TX; the Plant Disease Feature Article by Gent et al.; and the Allium web site - http://www.alliumnet.com/index.htm
3. Comments by WDC Administrative Advisor - Lee Sommers - Objectives of and participation on the 1-year WDC7 committee were discussed. Other items included University, USDA and industry team approach; Guidelines and options for creation of regional committees for 1 to 5 years; Description of development committee, coordinating committee, research and extension committee, and research project. The group decided to proceed with an application for a Regional Research Committee emphasizing Onion IYSV and Thrips objectives and collaboration, emphasis upon research and extension, with an annual reporting session
4. IYSV/Thrips Regional Committee Organization - officers were elected
Chair: Howard Schwartz, Colorado State University; Vice Chair: Chris Cramer, New Mexico State University; Secretary: Stuart Reitz, USDA-ARS, Tallahasse
5. Discussed timeline to draft and submit a regional research proposal - participants spent time editing objectives and other components of an application draft.
a. A revised draft will be sent to participants for further editing and return to Schwartz by mid to late February.
b. A final draft will then be entered in the NIMSS on-line system for further review by interested parties
c. Lee Sommers will share the draft with Exp. Directors and other agencies nationwide to solicit their participation
d. The application will be reviewed by western regional Regional Coordination and Implementation Committee at their summer meeting with anticipated approval by Fall of 2007. Proposal and contribution from the AES scientists and other contributors must be finalized and submitted to the WAAESD by May 15, 2007.
6. Other business- open discussion on IYSV and thrips, and included presentations made by some participants at the NARC meeting in December of 2007
7. Selection of next meeting date and location
a. the group preferred the fly in-fly out format near a major airport
b. January is the preferred month
c. the next site (possibly Denver) will be determined at a later date
(if feasible, every other year link to the NARC biennial meeting site)
