Accomplishments

NECC063 meets semi-annually in a conference setting that provides an excellent forum for the exchange of ideas relating to commodity promotion research among participants. The conference participants always include a good mixture of university researchers, government officials and private sector practitioners. The October 12-13, 2006 conference held in Auburn, Alabama was titled "New Research in Producer Checkoff-Funded Activties, Including Export Promotion." The first day of the conference included three research paper sessions on (1) price promotion, (2) non-price promotion and (3) export promotion. The second day included a round table discussion on the role and status of promotion research and a business meeting of the technical committee.

Brief Summary of Minutes

The NECC063 meeting is typically composed of two major segments. The first includes one or more formal paper presentation sessions by meeting participants. At the June 22, 2007 meeting, the paper session included four formal presentations and a roundtable discussion around the theme of "Managerial and Economic Issues in Commodity Promotion." The second session is a business meeting which focuses on the status of proceedings from previous meetings, plans for future meetings, and discussions relating to the functioning of the committee including elections of officers, adminsitrative reports, etc. A copy of the minutes of the business meeting session are attached.

Accomplishments

The theme of the Spring 2007 NECC063 semi-annual meeting was "Managerial and Economic Issues in Commodity Promotion." The meeting was held in conjunction with the International Food and Agribusiness Management Association's 17th Annual World Forum and Symposium held in Parma, Italy. As a result, the papers presented by committee members received significant international exposure. Four topics were presented: use of local claims on food labels; category management in fresh produce; customer branding of commodity products; and commodity promotion policy in the U.S. Farm Bill. The presentations were followed by a roundtable discussion of current issues in commodity promotion. The information developed by NECC063 participants is widely used by both private and public decision makers and university researchers.

Accomplishments

The theme of the Fall 2007 NECC063 semi-annual meeting was "Branded and Generic Dairy Promotion: New Strategies, New Methods." There were three sessions. The first session, "Dairy Promotion in Canada and the United States," included five paper presentations focusing on location-association quality claims on food labels, generic advertising and promotion, consumer preferences for milk and asymmetric advertising response. The second session, "Export Promotion," included four presentations on economic anaylses of various export promotion programs. The third session was a round table discussion on current checkoff issues led by a panel of industry representatives. The information and discussions from the NECC063 conferences provide valuable input into public and private decision making. Continual participation in the projects by private and public representatives demonstrates the value they place on this activity.

Accomplishments

The general theme of the Spring 2008 NECC063 semi-annual meeting was "The Economics of Commodity Checkoff Programs." There were four sessions: "Market Structure, Product Differentiation, and Generic Commodity Promotion"; "Evaluating Alternative Uses of Check-off Funds"; "Spill-over Effects of Promotion"; and Successes and Challenges of Commodity Promotion - Industry Perspectives". Three papers were presented in each session. Paper authors were from academia, government agencies and private sector firms.
