Brief Summary of Minutes

Members will submit lists of publications, theses, dissertations, grants, and presentations that are related to their work on NCCC65 (from 10/01/05 through 9/30/06) in preparation for documenting our impact. A follow-up survey will be sent in January 2007 to the forty-seven participants of the 2005 pre-conference, "USDA Funding Opportunities for Apparel and Textile Scholars" to assess the impact of the workshop and identify proposal submissions. As a follow-up to the special topic session, "Research Agenda 2010: Forging New Directions and Partnerships", held at the 2006 International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) annual meeting a summary of research topics will be distributed to participants and via an article in the ITAA Newsletter. NCCC65 members and interested researchers will continue the dialogue initiated at the special topic session to refine and prioritize the research with the goal of developing research projects/proposals. A pre-conference workshop proposal will be submitted for the 2007 ITAA annual conference to focus on the process of taking concept papers based on NCCC65 research priorities to the proposal development and submission stage. NCCC65 members will solicit concept papers and serve as moderators during the workshop to generate pioneering research proposals. Members will make contact with experts in research methodology (mixed methods research approaches and structural equation models) as potential topics for future workshops to increase research skills planned for 2008. NCCC65 members will collaborate with the conference coordinators of the NRI funded conference, "Building Research Collaborations to Enhance Rural Economic Development" to be held in April 2007. Conference flyers will be distributed to NCCC65 members and participants in previous North Central region research projects will be encouraged to attend.

Accomplishments

The NCCC_OLD65 project Social Change in the Marketplace: Producers, Retailers, Consumers was created to increase the overall quality, quantity and competitiveness of research related to social change in the marketplace by initiating systematic efforts to strengthen the research infrastructure for scientists in this area of inquiry. The following accomplishments are in relation to the project approved for the October 2000-September 2005 timeframe (NCCC_OLD65). <br /> <br /> With respect to Objective 1 of the proposal (Provide an opportunity for scholars to develop grantsmanship skills to secure federal funding) and Objective 4 (Provide information on the development and management of a research program based on external funding), we held a pre-conference entitled: "USDA Funding Opportunities for Apparel & Merchandising Scholars" in conjunction with the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) in November 2005. The intended outcome to increase the overall quality, quantity and competitiveness of research related to social change in the marketplace and to enhance scholars' ability to successfully acquire funding for research support. A potential impact is that 47 workshop participants will develop and submit USDA funding proposals. A second potential impact is an increase in the number of scientists working in this field on Federal project reviews and review panels. <br /> <br /> With respect to Objective 2 (Help workshop attendees develop skills necessary to attract private/industry support and initiate partnerships) and Objective 3 (Develop a proposal in partnership with colleagues from 1890 institutions to support their faculty members' participation in the program) of the NCCC065 proposal, we shared current research projects and interests as viable and critical areas for potential for research partnering. The intended outcome is to increase knowledge and awareness of research and external funding opportunities among scholars who focus on social change in the marketplace. The potential impact is that NCCC65 members will develop ideas for research and for research funding partnerships.<br /> <br /> With respect to Objective 3, (Develop a proposal in partnership with colleagues from 1890s institutions to support their faculty members' participation in the program) we contacted representatives from 1862 institutions, 1890 institutions and Hispanic serving institutions and human science organizations to partner on NCCC-65 initiatives. In addition, Marilyn DeLong contacted the 1890 schools to encourage participation and met with the 1890s group at NASULGC to generate interest. The intended outcome is to increase funding and research productivity in collaboration with ethnic minority researchers. The potential impact is that NCCC65 members and ethnic minority researchers will develop and conduct funded research and collaborative projects. <br /> <br /> Educators for Socially Responsible Apparel Businesses (ESRAB) a group initiated and partially funded by NCCC-65 sponsored met November 3, 2006. Members established a more formal organizational structure and created committees to focus on body image issues and the apparel industry, socially responsible curriculum, ESRAB outreach, and publications. An ESRAB website is under development. Awards were presented for sustainable design in the International Textile and Apparel Association design competition. The intended outcome is to increase knowledge and awareness of research opportunities among scholars who focus on social change in the marketplace. The potential impact is that NCCC65 members will develop ideas for collaborative research and research funding partnerships.<br />

Impact Statements

  1. Impacts: Evaluations from the NRI Conference suggests participants valued the experience and considered the conference an opportunity to change their approach for conducting research - as a single investigator to a team approach. A change in knowledge occurred from participation in the NRI conference. Researchers perspectives on the rural development topic were broadened from a single-state to a regional or national level through interactions with other participants and through the post-panel discussions. Further change in knowledge occurred from the additional follow-up conference conducted with breeze technology. Participants who are familiar with qualitative and quantitative research methods were introduced to mixed methods by a well-known scholar in the field who is also the textbook author and editor of a mixed methods journal.
  2. Questions were addressed via the breeze set-up and all participants could enter into the discussion. A change in action occurred with the meeting of researchers at a professional meeting seven months following the conference. Individuals have been attending this professional meeting for approximately 8 to 15 years, but have never before met as a large group to discuss planning of collaborative research and grant writing. Further changes in action are suggested by the adoption of a sequential mixed method approach to research.
  3. The qualitative step has been completed and data analysis is underway to advance social capital theory development. The quantitative step will be included in the grant proposal to advance theory testing. A change from working independently to collaboratively has occurred as a result of the NRI conference and subsequent activities. The quality of the research design has improved with input from multiple scholars. Protocols have been developed and followed to insure comparable data. Decision-making knowledge has been transferred and advanced.

Accomplishments

Review of NCCC-065 Accomplishments<br /> <br /> 1. Set research priorities for multi-state and national work on emerging issues relevant to Social Change in the Marketplace.<br /> <br /> " San Antonio (2006): Special Topic Session, Research Agenda 2010: Forging New Directions and Partnerships The session was organized and conducted by the NCCC-65 Multistate Research Coordinating Committee and Information Exchange Group to bring together a diverse and multi-disciplinary group of ITAA scholars to discuss social changes occurring in the marketplace and to set priorities for multi-institutional research. Changing market, environmental, and policy forces continue to create social change in the marketplace impacting producers, retailers, and consumers. Members of NCCC-65 are committed to fostering research and dialogue as a means of understanding and explaining marketplace changes that impact the consumer-marketplace interface. <br /> o As an outgrowth of previous ITAA Special Topic Sessions (1998 and 2000) and Workshops (2001, 2002, 2005) the focus of this session was on three key areas of social change in the marketplace: 1) technology and its impact on consumer/retailer/producer actions in the marketplace, 2) society's impact on consumer demand for goods and services to improve human well being, and 3) economic linkages among consumers, retailers, and producers to enhance community development. <br /> o Follow-up actions included establishing an e-mail distribution list to disseminate summaries of the breakout group session discussions. Brief Summary of Minutes

Members shared reports from their universities and submitted lists of publications, theses, dissertations, grants and presentations related to their work on NCCC-65 from 10/01/08 through 9/30/09. Results of a follow-up survey to the 2005 pre-conference workshop on USDA funding opportunities were reported. A follow-up survey to the 2007 pre-conference session Research on the Edge (preparing research for grant applications) will be conducted in 2010. An NCCC-65 sponsored special topic session Adding SEM to Your Analytical Toolbox: Designing Studies Using Structural Equation Modeling was held a few days prior to the meeting and was assessed. An advanced SEM workshop is under planning for the 2010 International Textile and Apparel Association meeting in Montreal, Canada. Plans for other methods information sessions were made for potential presentation in future years. Review of activities of ESRAB (Educators for Socially Responsible Apparel Business) was delayed because their annual meeting was scheduled for the end of October. The NCCC-65 project passed midterm review; plans for project renewal have begun.

Accomplishments

In Station reports, NCCC-65 members listed 32 new scholarly journal publications in print, 4 book chapters, 2 books, 5 Masters theses, 3 doctoral dissertations, $324,951 in new grant acquisitions, and numerous conference presentations and designs in juried exhibitions.<br /> <br /> <br /> Accomplishments of NCCC-65 related to project objectives:<br /> <br /> <br /> Objective 1. Set research priorities for multi-state and national work on emerging issues relevant to Social Change in the Marketplace.<br /> <br /> <br /> Educators for Socially Responsible Apparel Business (ESRAB), an organization initiated by NCCC-65, continues to support and decide the Award for Sustainable Design through ITAA. The award is given to a student or faculty design best implementing and promoting sustainable design in the ITAA design competition, thus encouraging work related to sustainability.<br /> <br /> <br /> Objective 2. Identify strategies to increase the rigor of the research methodology and empirical techniques used to study Social Change in the Marketplace.<br /> <br /> <br /> NCCC-65 organized a special topic session Adding SEM to Your Analytical Toolbox: Designing Studies Using Structural Equation Modeling presented at the American Marketing Society/American Collegiate Retailing Association tri-annual joint meeting, September 29, 2009. 40 people attended. Because of the enthusiastic attendance and assessment of this session and a prior session at the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) in 2008, a 4-hour pre-conference workshop on more advanced issues in SEM will be proposed for the 2010 ITAA meeting. <br /> <br /> <br /> Members of the group identified needs and plans for future conference sessions on SEM diagnostics, partial least squares, visual display of data, and cross-cultural research issues.<br /> <br /> <br /> A November 2008 survey revealed that approximately $1,885,946 in funding had been awarded to researchers who had attended the 2005 NCCC-65 USDA Grant Funding Pre-conference Session held before the International Textile and Apparel Association annual meeting in Alexandria, VA, in November. The goal of the session was to increase the numbers of researchers receiving external funding. Attendees were sent a follow-up questionnaire to determine the success of the session. Of 43 people attending, approximately $1,685,000 in federal grant dollars were received, 3 other federal grants were applied for that were not funded (authors were revising), $15,000 in private foundation monies were received, $13,300 in state grant monies were received, and $172,646.75 in internal Experiment Station funding were received. Because internal grants through Experiment Station and universities were not specifically asked about in the survey, those awards are under-represented in these figures.<br /> <br /> <br /> Objective 3. Provide an opportunity for scholars to build partnerships, develop mutual interests, and foster collaborative national research efforts on social Change in the Marketplace.<br /> <br /> <br /> Educators for Socially Responsible Apparel Business (ESRAB) planned to break into interest groups to discuss plans for relevant research and funding possibilities at the October 31, 2009 meeting. Report to be featured in next years NCCC-65 annual report<br /> <br /> <br /> Objective 4. Share and critique new ideas and new unpublished data regarding issues related to Social Change in the Marketplace.<br /> <br /> <br /> Members from multiple states continue to work on grant projects related to rural business and main street development. Many of the grants are outcomes of the 2007 Kansas City NRI data sharing conference Research Collaborations to Enhance Rural Economic Development. <br /> <br />

Brief Summary of Minutes

The meeting was held following the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) annual meeting in Montreal, Canada. An NCCC-65 sponsored ITAA workshop Building Alliances in the Use of Statistical Methods: Advanced Usage of Structural Equation Modeling was held a few days prior to the meeting and was assessed. Activities of ESRAB (Educators for Socially Responsible Apparel Business) were reviewed; speaker Dror Etzion from McGill University presented at the ESRAB annual meeting information about designer metrics that can be used to change product design systems. Coordination with ESRAB to launch a review of relevant sustainability research and implementation of grant writing activity was planned for 2011. Much of the NCCC-65 meeting was spent on completing the 5-year project renewal proposal. Recruitment of potential new members was also planned. Members shared reports from their universities and submitted lists of publications, theses, dissertations, grants and presentations related to NCCC-65 and completed during 10/01/09 through 9/30/10. Discussion of emerging issues related to indicators of social change in the marketplace focused primarily on sustainability and mass customization. An information seeking trip to government funding agencies in Washington D.C. is under planning in conjunction with our 2011 annual meeting. Methods of collecting advice from journal editors about publication success and possibilities for disseminating that information to scholars were discussed.

Accomplishments

Accomplishments:<br /> <br /> In Station reports, NCCC-65 members listed 15 new scholarly journal publications in print, 3 best paper awards, 5 book chapters, 2 books, 4 industry magazine articles, 2 Masters theses, 2 doctoral dissertations, $467,219 in new grant acquisitions, and numerous conference presentations invited and juried. <br /> <br /> Accomplishments of NCCC-65 related to project objectives:<br /> <br /> Objective 1. The award is given to a student or faculty design best implementing and promoting sustainable design in the ITAA design competition, thus encouraging work related to sustainability. <br /> <br /> ESRAB also awards two ITAA best paper awards for (1) research on sustainability and (2) teaching innovation related to sustainabililty.<br /> <br /> Objective 2. Identify strategies to increase the rigor of the research methodology and empirical techniques used to study Social Change in the Marketplace.<br /> <br /> NCCC-65 organized a 4-hour workshop on Building Alliances in the Use of Statistical Methods: Advanced Usage of Structural Equation Modeling at the International Textile and Apparel Association annual conference in Montreal, Canada, October 27, 2010. Seven people attended. The advanced focus of the workshop and expense of travel to the conference may have reduced attendance compared to previous sessions and workshops. Feedback from the attendees was positive and indicated interest in further sessions/workshops over very focused and advanced components of SEM.<br /> <br /> Objective 3. Provide an opportunity for scholars to build partnerships, develop mutual interests, and foster collaborative national research efforts on Social Change in the Marketplace.<br /> <br /> Discussion of emerging issues lead to the realization that there has been limited organized review of research advancements related to sustainability and indicators of social change in the marketplace. Collaboration with ESRAB is planned to alleviate that deficiency and then position scholars to design grant applications to move the field forward.<br /> <br /> Educators for Socially Responsible Apparel Business (ESRAB) broke into interest groups to discuss plans for relevant research and funding possibilities at the October 31, 2009 meeting in Bellevue, WA. <br /> <br /> Objective 4. Collaboration with ESRAB is planned to alleviate that deficiency and then position scholars to design grant applications to move the field forward.<br /> <br /> Discussion of emerging issues also resulted in examination of social change implications of emerging technological advancements in mass customization. As the technology advances over the next 10 years, potential applications could bring ground-breaking changes in retailing and consumer behavior, both in rural and urban locales. The discussion highlighted upcoming arenas for research and collaboration with private industry. <br /> <br /> Dror Etzion, McGill University, presented at the ESRAB annual meeting information about designer metrics that can be used to change product design systems. Issues related to product design and sustainability were featured. <br />
