The annual meeting of the NCERA-199 committee, held in conjunction with the NC-1010 annual meeting and the L. Dale Van Vleck Symposium, once again served as a forum for individuals involved in all aspects of genetic evaluation (biological, statistical, computational, and economical) to brainstorm and exchange information.

The L. Dale Van Vleck Symposium was sponsored and organized by NCERA-199 members and provided a forum to discuss research and honor Dr. Van Vleck for his many years of research and contribution to animal genetic evaluations.
This symposium, held in conjunction with the NCERA-199 annual meeting, attracted a much wider audience of non-members to the annual meeting than has attended in previous years, allowing for a greater forum for exchanging ideas.
A potential for online graduate education, a collaborative effort with the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium, was discussed and supported by many members of NCERA-199.

Publications

Impact Statements
- The prototype for multi-breed cattle evaluation is being run at Georgia. When fully developed and released, this will allow cattle producers to compare bulls from different breeds and crossbred bulls to each other.
- A symposium about the genetics of animal health was held in December in Kansas City. Despite the large economic impact of animal health for producers, little work has been done to determine the genetic basis of animal health traits. This conference was a forum to allow exchange of ideas and planning for future research.

Accomplishments
The 2008 annual meeting of the NCERA-199 group was held December 8-10, 2008 in Kansas City, Missouri in conjunction with the Beef Improvement Federations 9th Genetic Prediction Workshop. The NCERA-199 morning session featured committee members Drs. Steve Kachman and Ignacy Misztal. They reviewed their research outcomes in the area of incorporating marker information into genetic evaluation. Theory and application issues were discussed. A full program for the workshop, which featured many keynote/technical presentations by members can be viewed here:

http://www.nbcec.org/nbcec/genpred/agenda.pdf

The Genetic Prediction Workshop focused on current topics in the prediction of genetic merit of animals for selection. Topics included identification of economically relevant traits, estimation of molecular breeding values, and integration of molecular information with pedigree and performance data for prediction of EPDs. The workshop was sponsored by the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) and the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium. The discussion and proceedings will provide the basis for the addition and revision of materials in the BIFs Guidelines for Uniform Beef Improvement. Dr. Larry Cundiff (USDA-ARS retired) is serving as editor for the revision of the current guidelines to produce a new edition.

Committee members continued work in the development and deployment of an online graduate education curriculum in animal breeding and genetics. The curriculum development is funded by USDA and many of the committee members graduate students are enrolled in course modules. Through this initiative, eight modules, each consistent with 1-credit of graduate-level coursework, will ultimately be offered on a national level.

Committee members continue to host the Brown Bagger series presented by the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium. The series is designed as a train-the-trainer curriculum and reaches educators, state and regional extension personnel and producers across the country. The series provides timely research and evidence based information in the areas of quantitative genetics, breeding systems, molecular genetics and selection system implementation issues.

The National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium, which is led by members of this committee, has developed a number of multi-institution teams designed to collect and analyze data to address a number of distinct research needs in the area of beef cattle genetics. These teams have been extramurally funded and are investigating the quantitative and molecular genetic aspects of disease resistance, fatty acid and mineral composition of beef products and heifer fertility. The consortium continues to work in the area of DNA marker validation with the cooperation of genomic testing companies. Further, the consortium has completed the development work of a multi-breed genetic evaluation system that is currently being licensed by a number of industry organizations for use in genetic evaluation of beef cattle.
Publications
Impact Statements
- Through the development and licensure of the multi-breed genetic evaluation software packages, breed associations are internalizing national cattle evaluation (NCE) systems. Transition NCE services are motivated by the fact that several of the land-grant universities that have historically provided this service are discontinuing NCE as they refocus efforts on research activities.
- The committee members provided input and direction towards the development of a revised edition of the BIF Guidelines for Uniform Beef Improvement Programs through involvement in the BIF Genetic Prediction Workshop. Included in this valuable discussion was the presentation of proposed methodologies for incorporation of DNA marker tests results in NCE systems.
- Committee members impacted the training and education of educators, extension professionals and ultimately commercial and seedstock beef cattle producers across the US in the area of beef genetics through the NBCEC Brown Bagger series.
- Committee members provided graduate-level coursework in animal breeding and genetics through their participation in an online graduate education curriculum. In its first year, this initiative engaged 41 students, 12 of which enrolled in all three courses; without this curriculum, such coursework would not have been available to these students. Additionally, 16 universities benefitted from having their students participate in this coursework.

The 2009 annual meeting of the NCERA-199 group was held October 19-20, 2009 in Columbia, Missouri. The NCERA-199 afternoon session featured committee members Drs. Steve Kachman, Daniel Gianola and Mark Thallman. They reviewed their research outcomes in the area of incorporating marker information into genetic evaluation. Theory and application issues were discussed. Later in the afternoon representatives from breed associations discussed what they perceived the needs to be from an industry perspective. The following day, committee members reported on research, extension, and teaching activities of the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium (NBCEC). Drs. Rohan Fernando and Ignacy Misztal also provided research results centered on the use of molecular information in the genetic evaluation of beef cattle and Dr. Brent Woodward of Igenity shared information regarding the first release of marker assisted expected progeny differences to the industry in the Angus breed.

Committee members continued work in the development and deployment of an online graduate education curriculum in animal breeding and genetics. Diminishing numbers of faculty in the area of animal breeding and genetics have reduced opportunities for specialized coursework that would prepare future scholars in the field. A consortium of universities, led by Virginia Tech, has joined efforts to address this challenge by developing a series of online courses designed to supplement graduate-level instruction for existing degree programs in animal breeding and genetics. Faculty from Virginia Tech, Colorado State, Michigan State, and Cornell University are working together to create this curriculum that may be taken by students at universities and colleges across the United States. This project is kindly funded by the Higher Education Challenge Grant Program in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service, and began in August 2007.

Committee members continue to host the Brown Bagger series presented by the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium. The series is designed as a train-the-trainer curriculum and reaches educators, state and regional extension personnel and producers across the country. The series provides timely research based information in the areas of quantitative genetics, breeding systems, molecular genetics and selection system implementation issues. In 2009, 4 sessions were held with between 40 and 50 participants per session. Members of the committee also planned and conducted a two-day symposium on the current status of molecular based selection in the beef industry in Clay Center Nebraska. The proceedings of this symposium, in the form of seven fact sheets, are available online through eXtension.

The National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium, which is led by members of this committee, has developed a number of multi-institution teams designed to collect and analyze data to address a number of distinct research needs in the area of beef cattle genetics. These teams have been extramurally funded and are investigating the quantitative and molecular genetic aspects of disease resistance, fatty acid and mineral composition of beef products, heifer fertility, cow longevity and adaptation, and a project centered on weaning weight that engages twenty-one beef cattle producers from six states. Further, the NBCEC successfully conducted a two-day workshop centered on the genetics of reproduction. Members of this committee served as speakers and on the planning committee for this event.
Publications

Brief summary of Minutes of Annual Meeting:
The 2011 NCERA-199 Implementation and Strategies for National Beef Cattle Genetic Evaluation was held in Kansas City, MO on October 20-21, 2011. Dr. Robert Williams served as chair and Dr. Larry Kuehn served as secretary.
Dr. Williams called the business meeting to order at approximately 1:00 p.m. A majority of the committee was in attendance meeting the quorum requirement.
Old Business: The NCERA-199 renewal document was distributed for all members to see. The document was prepared by committee members Dr. Bormann and Dr. Spangler. Members were reminded to renew as members (fill out Appendix E) for the new project by mid-November (2011) to participate. Although industry representative members of the committee do not require University approval, their renewal as members was requested as well as their participation demonstrates the impact of the committee.
New Business: For the second year in a row no NIFA National Program Leader was assigned to the committee. An update on the NIFA budget, the AFRI grant program, and changes to NIFA personnel was given in the form of a handout. NIFA was contacted in regard to the lack of a program leader assigned to the committee; this oversight should be corrected by the next annual meeting. Dr. Williams opened nominations from the floor for the chair position. Dr. Dorian Garrick volunteered to serve as chair and host for the 2012 annual meeting. A motion was made, seconded, and approved by acclamation in support of Dr. Garrick. The next meeting was tentatively set for October 18-19, 2012 in Des Moines with Iowa State University as the host. Dr. Rohan Fernando volunteered to serve as secretary of the committee. The secretary position was approved by a motion, second, and acclamation vote. The committee discussed the need for another Genetic Prediction Workshop over the next few years. Dr. Thallman stated that this issue had also been raised at the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) board meeting. The committee suggested establishing a dialogue with BIF in support of a Genetic Prediction Workshop in the fall of 2013.
The committee expressed thanks to Dr. Robert Williams for hosting the 2012 meeting in Kansas City.
The committee expressed thanks to Dr. Bormann and Dr. Spangler for preparing the NCERA-199 renewal document.
Dr. Spangler motioned to adjourn
Dr. Kachman second
The motion to adjourn was approved by voice vote at approximately 1:30 p.m.
Accomplishments
The NCERA-199 annual meeting was held in Kansas City, MO October 20-21, 2011. The session focused primarily on improvement of the accuracy of genomic predictions and associations and their use in national cattle evaluations. Speakers included Dr. Steve Kachman, Dr. Matt Spangler, Dr. Rohan Fernando, Dr. Warren Snelling, Dr. Shogo Tsuruta, Dr. Christian Maltecca, Dr. Xiao-Lin Wu, Jack Ward, and Dr. Dorian Garrick. Dr. Ron Lewis also presented (via teleconference) the current status of the online animal breeding and genetics education curriculum funded by the Higher Education Challenge Grant Program in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service.

The National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium NBCEC, consisting of several members of this committee, continued to support educational and research projects related to beef cattle genetic evaluation programs. The Brown Bagger series continued in 2011 with 4 educational sessions. The NBCEC sponsored symposia in March to identify genetic strategies to improve healthfulness of beef and in November to increase the use of genomic prediction in national cattle evaluation. In addition, they sponsored an educational program on the current status of beef cattle genomic research in June at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center. Fact sheets from this program have been made available on www.nbcec.org. Also, a new edition of the Beef Sire Selection Manual (2nd) was produced with contributions from several members of this committee. This manual is also available on www.nbcec.org.

Two large USDA grants were funded with leadership by members of the committee. These grants focused on improvement of feed efficiency and on increasing resistance to bovine respiratory disease complex. Each grant will be funded for a 5-yr term. These focus areas are of high-priority to commercial and seedstock cattle producers. The feed efficiency grant will utilize relationships established with central U.S. seedstock producers from the NBCEC Weight Traits Project. These seedstock producers will contribute semen from herd bulls to develop a population demonstrating the efficacy of prediction equations developed in the research portion of the grant.
Publications

- Impact Statements: 1. Committee members continued to impact extension education in genetic evaluation through participation and organization of the NBCEC Brown Bagger series. 2. Graduate education (over 20 participating institutions) in animal breeding and genetics was further improved through online graduate education provided by several members of the committee. 3. With participation of members of the committee, several breed associations have developed breed specific genomic prediction equations for economically relevant traits and began to incorporate them in their national cattle evaluations.
