Section 1) Minutes

2002 Annual Meeting Minutes

Minutes from the WCC-72 Meeting, Las Vegas

June, 2002

The meeting began with a business session where the nominating committee was selected. This was followed by a Knowledge Management Industry Focus with Mr. Michael OConnor, a retired executive director of the Food Marketing Institute, speaking. The overall presentation generated a great deal of discussion and questions.

Next were two book reviews on knowledge management: Tom Sporleder reviewed Knowledge Management and Charlie Hall reviewed Fast Food Nation, the latter of which generated a lot of questions and answers.

The afternoon session began with two papers on knowledge management strategy with Desmond Ng first presenting a knowledge-based view of strategy and Hamish Gow then presenting a new model for analyzing how businesses can cooperate to compete in high velocity global markets.

This session was followed by a presentation of knowledge management in Asia with Eric Thor talking about his experiences in China and Jim Hagen presenting his work in Southeast AsiaVietnam.

This was followed by the last paper session of the day including applied research done in the area of knowledge management. David Sparling, Geetanjali Tandon, and LeeAnn Moss all presented research that they had completed in the area. This concluded the first day of the program.

Day two started with a business session where the new secretary for next year was elected. Next years officers include: Charlie Hall as president, Sue Hine, vice chair, Cheryl Wachenheim will be the new secretary and Al Wysocki will continue on as treasurer.

Next was a special panel discussion on outside perspectives of agribusiness research, teaching, and outreach. David Holder of the USDA and Otto Doering, Purdue University helped to provide different insights as individuals outside of the agribusiness discipline. A great deal of questions and comments (as well as areas of concern to pursue) were generated by the discussion following their presentations.

Lisa House next presented research completed on Ph.D. education. She described a survey sent to recent graduates and their responses to issues surrounding their education in the area of agribusiness. Again, many questions were generated and a good discussion followed. Randy Westgren also presented some new ideas about where the discipline is going and offered a lot of food for thought as well as some new perspectives.

The last agenda in the morning was a panel of recent Ph.D. grads who talked about their individual experiences in both their graduate program and new jobshow well prepared they were and their recommendations for other graduates following in their footsteps.

In the afternoon, there were two paper sessions. The first included papers about the vegetable and fruit industry in Guatemalan presented by Juan-Manuel Estrada, a vegetable case study in Colorado presented by Susan Hine, and an IFAS team Update of their recent survey work given by Alice Rhea.

The second and last session was on supply chains in knowledge management and included a paper on vertical coordination and knowledge creation by Antonio Nogueria and Mike Mazzocco reported on a consumer survey completed on consumer responses to GMO foods.

All papers can be downloaded from the WCC-72 website located at:

Brief Summary of Minutes

Minutes from the WCC-72 Meeting, Las Vegas,June, 2003

The meeting began with a business session where the nominating committee was selected. This was followed with a presentation by Dr. Julie Caswell, Food Safety, What is the Economists Value Added. The presentation was very informative and addressed many key issues surrounding food safety today.

The first paper session included topics about consumer food safety behavior. Wendy Umberger, Colorado State University, presented her work on characteristics affecting consumer perceptions and preference for U.S. labeled beef. This was followed by Lynn Hunnicutt of Utah State, who presented the results of a survey conducted to determine consumer views on the safety aspects of various characteristics of produce.

The second paper session dealt with industry food safety actions with a paper presented by Susan Hine of Colorado State University, Employees and Food Safety: Is Training Im0ortant to Food Service Managers? The next paper in this session was Food Safety Risk Perception Gap between Consumers and Processors of Specialty Meats presented by Willaim Nganje of North Dakota State. The last paper in the session, Analysis of Strategic Marketing Decisions for Organic Ag Producers, was presented by Jon Phillips of Cal Poly, Pomona.

In first session of the afternoon, Tony Crooks of the Rural Business Cooperative Services, presented a 2002 study completed on the challenges facing agricultural cooperatives in the 21st century. This was followed by two papers: Karl Meilke, University of Guelph, presented a paper on Modeling Bio-terrorism in the Agrifood Sector. This was followed by a presentation by Greg Baker, Santa Clara, on a study that he conducted on Factors Affecting Consumer Response to Low Probability Food Safety Risks. This was followed by a cash bar, which concluded this days events.

Day two started with a business session where the new secretary for next year was elected. Next years officers will include: Sue Hine as chair, Cheryl Wachenheim vice chair, Ruby Ward will be the new secretary and Al Wysocki will continue on as treasurer. Al presented the treasurers report, which showed that we are operating with a small surplus and we should be in good shape for next year. The minutes for the 2002 meeting were then approved.

Next, Charlie Hall discussed the need to complete an annual report in order to maintain funding for this committee. All members were requested to submit any work (including collaboration with other members) to be included the report. He will complete this report (with the assistance of Sue Hine) before leaving his duties as chair. The members of the committee all expressed their thanks to Al Wysocki for his continued work as treasurer and web master. Glen Whipple then gave his report as the regional director for this committee and stated that he has been very impressed with the group as a whole and enjoys attending our meetings. A date was then set for next year, June 7-9, at the Boardwalk once again.

Accomplishments

We have been continuing to work on coordination of research, extension, and teaching projects among participating faculty, graduate students, government, and industry leaders that results in the publication of joint research papers and extension publications. Additionally we have identified critical issues facing our industry such as food safety the role of genetically modified organism and products, and Country Origin of Labeling and then finding ways to conduct joint research that can help to provide timely information to the public. We had a number of presentations and discussions of research findings regarding issues related to agribusiness management and competitiveness. We have increased information exchange among participants and others through the cataloguing of completed and ongoing research and extension projects and products on the coordinating committees home page. ·Finally we have increased quality and output of research and extension products through participant collaboration in integrated and multi-state work.
