Short-term Outcomes:

The recent multistate group meeting commenced with introductions, followed by a brief history and discussion of goals outlined in the most recent reports. The group explored potential outreach initiatives, considering ideas such as adaptive modifications, disaster preparedness handbooks, webinars for county agents, a list of contractor certifications based on South Dakota's work, and the creation of two fact sheets for dissemination. Additionally, plans for a doll-house-sized house mockup for Aging in Place were discussed. Grant ideas were presented, including USDA Planning Grants, Extension Foundation Planning Grants, and opportunities with the Walmart Foundation. The project's goals and objectives were highlighted, with further details available on the project's page: https://www.nimss.org/projects/view/18430. Action items included facilitating communication for interested individuals to join the multistate group, condensing the group's published articles into fact sheets, and a request for examples and volunteer support from co-authors.

Outputs:

The group is currently working on getting factsheets created from previously published articles by members of the multi-state project. Brief Summary of Minutes
Integrated Summary of 2025 NIMSS S1082 Meetings
Project: Aging in Place: Home and Community in Rural America
Meeting Dates Covered: November 17–18, 2025, with supplemental virtual meetings during 2025
Meeting Format: In-person meeting held in conjunction with the Housing Education and Research Association (HERA) Conference, supplemented by virtual meetings
Summary of Activities and Progress
During 2025, the NIMSS S1082 multistate research team met regularly virtually to advance research on housing and aging in place. The year culminated in a face-to-face meeting hosted by Virginia Tech on November 17–18, 2025, held in conjunction with the HERA annual conference.
Meetings focused on reviewing analyses using the American Housing Survey, with emphasis on housing adequacy, accessibility, and factors influencing older adults’ ability to age in place. Members discussed results to ensure alignment with project objectives. Planning included manuscript development, recruitment of a new member, and plans to translate findings into Extension outputs. Additionally, project leadership addressed concerns related to team functioning. These concerns were discussed with appropriate leadership. As a result of this process, one member was asked to discontinue participation in the S1082 multistate project.
The team identified priorities for 2026, including scholarship (manuscripts, one conference presentation, and at least one Extension resource) and continuing regular meetings.
