Brief Summary of Minutes

Following introductions project updates were provided by the team coordinators for each objective. Updates were followed by discussion of new objectives for the five-year project renewal.  The proposal was revised to address reviewer comments and to reflect the discussion during the annual meeting.

Brief Summary of Minutes

The annual meeting of S1071 took place in Charleston, SC in conjunction with the American Association for Agricultural Education national conference.  The meeting started with a working dinner on the evening of May 14 and continued through May 15.  Following discussion of general business, the group members provided project updates and discussed specific plans for the coming year by project objective.  Officers and objective leaders were identified.  Detailed minutes are attached.

<p>More information on accomplishments can be found in the attached minutes, but a breif list of accomplishments incude:</p><br /> <ul><br /> <li><strong>Objective 1</strong>: A paper on the Disciplinary Core Ideas identified for the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) was developed; a protocol has been completed and received IRB approval from one insitution for interviewing Ag Science faculty on NGSS crosscutting concepts.</li><br /> <li><strong>Objective 2</strong>: The team is working on a proposal resubmission to obtain external funding in support of teacher observations and participation.</li><br /> <li><strong>Objective 3:</strong> Members participated in a critical review of the innovation configuration map created during the first 5 year project period. Plans are being developed for its dissemination.</li><br /> </ul><br /> <p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>More information on accomplishments can be found in the attached minutes, but a brief list of accomplishments include:</p><br /> <ul><br /> <li><strong>Objective 1</strong>: A paper on the Disciplinary Core Ideas identified for the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) was published ad a plan for its dissemination was discussed.</li><br /> <li><strong>Objective 2</strong>: The team developed a data collection plan to address the many challenges faced in completing this objective, specifically the defining and identification of &ldquo;exemplary teachers&rdquo;. A survey instrument was created and a plan was developed for pilot testing the instrument.</li><br /> <li><strong>Objective 3:</strong> Comments from the critical peer review of the innovation configuration map were incorporated into additional edits by this objective&rsquo;s team. A plan for dissemination was discussed.</li><br /> </ul>

Impact Statements

  1. Though many of the expected outputs of this project are still being refined, many S1071 members are incorporating findings and lessons learned into secondary teacher professional development programs aimed at increasing the connections between ag education and STEM learning.

S1071 met in person on May 17, 2022 in Oklahoma City.  The objective leads and participants provided updates on activities completed for each objective. The chair discussed updates and timeline for the next 5-year replacement proposal for this group. A review of the updated objectives in replacement project was discussed and individuals were assigned to lead each objective. New leadership team was selected to lead the project. Research in multiple states being conducted currently looking at socioscientific issues and identifying the methods exemplary agriculture teachers use in this process. Collection is under way. Other research is being conducted to look at frameworks being used in agricultural education for exemplary teaching. Anther study looking at how science teachers who integrate agriculture are doing it. A study examining principles and perceptions of SBAE teachers related STEM integration is under way. Another study is under way looking at urban science teachers and integration as well as training of NGSS- identifying practices, methods, resources being utilized. Another project being conducted &ldquo;STEM it up&rdquo; is exploring additional avenues for STEM integration in SBAE content areas (methods and resources) and illuminating STEM practices through agriscience projects.</p><br /> <p>&nbsp;Objective 3: &nbsp;The previously completed innovation configuration map has been reviewed and has been published and disseminated.</p><br /> <p>See attached minutes for additional details.</p>
