Brief Summary of Minutes

Richard Beeson provided a tour of the new research station in Apopka, Florida, and arranged for a tour of the Harry P. Leu Gardens in Orlando, Florida. Winston Dunwell led the group in a review and discussion of a manuscript currently in submission to HortTechnology on the history of the group and its activities. On line plant data collection materials were discussed for the group homepage http://www.ag.auburn.edu/landscape/SERAhomepage.html. Data collection forms were revised. Sponsors agreed to provide a distributor list with future distributions for inclusion on the website. A uniform coding system for plant trial entries was agreed upon. It was agreed that plant sponsors for testing would be responsible for annual reports on their plants, provision of images for the web page, and writing a summary article for the Proceedings of the Southern Nursery Research Conference at the conclusion of the evaluation period for each taxon. It was agreed to place minutes of the meetings on the website. Aimee Coker, from Flowerwood Nursery in Bushnell, Florida, provided an overview of their Encore Plants program.

Accomplishments

Nineteen taxa have been distributed among the participants of SERA IEG 27 for landscape evaluation. The number of years for which evaluation data will be collected ranges from 3 to 10 years. The first set of plants from which terminal data will be taken is scheduled for ??2002. However, preliminary data are already shaping local decisions related to landscape plant recommendations.

Brief Summary of Minutes

Members reviewed the status of the SERA-IEG 27 program, plants in review, and the web page http://www.ag.auburn.edu/hf/landscape/SERAhomepage.html. Project leaders need to review the website and indicate who received plants and make changes if necessary. Good pictures and descriptions are needed. Evaluators need to indicate if they have plants and are continuing evaluation. Current findings will be published in the proceedings of the Southern Nursery Associate Research Conference and the Southern Region of the International Plant Propagators Society. Objectives for the new project must be decided. A draft will be available at the next meeting. New plants adopted for evaluation included: Ceanothus x delilianus >Gloire de Versailles, Pinus ayacahuite, and Viburnum luzonicum.

Officers elected for 2005-2006 were Patricia Knight-Chair, Mike Scheiber-Secretary, and Greg Eaton-Executive Committee. Ken Tilt is still serving as Chair of the Plant Evaluation Committee. Mississippi is scheduled to host the 2006 meeting in Poplarville. The 2007 meeting will be in Kentucky, and the 2008 meeting is tentatively scheduled for Virginia.

The groups continuation should be approved for a five year renewal at the meeting of the southern region directors in August. The plant evaluations were reviewed and plans were made to publish a listing of 43 taxa evaluated by the group in the Southern Nursery Association Research Conference Proceedings in 2008. Two new plants - Betsy Ross lilac (Syringa) and Duet beautyberry (Callicarpa dichomata) were approved for evaluation and a group of Taxodium selections from Texas were approved for evaluation.

Officers elected for 2007-2008 were Allen Owings Chair, Jim Robbins Secretary, Alex Niemiera Executive Committee. Ed Bush continues as Chair of the Plant Evaluation Committee. Virginia will host the 2008 meeting. Arkansas will host the 2009 meeting.

Accomplishments

The group decided to pursue publishing in the Southern Nursery Association Proceedings in 2008 an article on the 43 taxa current being evaluated by the group along with a contact person for each plant and a listing of states where each plant is currently being evaluated or has been evaluated. <br /> <br /> Potential plant evaluations for the group to consider during the next few years were discussed. Mike Arnold has bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) selections for evaluation.
