*Committee Members
Meeting held at Hon-Dah Resort, White Mountain Apache Resort Reservation.
Meeting called to order at 4:00 p.m.
WCC1006: Management of the Mexican Wolf
(Multistate Research Coordinating Committee and Information Exchange Group)
Paul R. Krausman opened the meeting and described the purpose of the group. He then indicated that we need to elect a Chairperson, Co-chair and Secretary.
Attendees were asked to briefly describe research projects they were involved with associated with the Mexican gray wolf. The following is a brief outline of ongoing research activities.
PI(s); Students; Project
Warren Ballard, Stewart Breck; C. Cariappa (Ph.D); Population estimation based on DNA from wolf scats.
Warren Ballard, Stewart Breck; M. Panasci (M.S.); Calf mortalities from wolves and coyote ecology.
Paul R. Krausman, Warren Ballard; D. Stark (M.S.); Estimate of wolf kill rates.
Paul R. Krausman, Warren Ballard, John Morgart, John Oakleaf; J. Merkle (Intern); Summer diet of wolves.
Melanie Culver; S. Rinkevich (Ph.D.); Diets of Mexican wolves and attitudes of Apaches about wolves.
Larry Howery; B. Kluver (M.S.); Wolfe-cattle study
Unknown; E. Burnham; Portable gas chromate-graph as an aid to understanding wolf diets.
David Bergman; 2 studies; Rabies associated with wolves.
Nick Ashcroft; 2 studies; Economic assessment of wolf translocations in Catron Co., NM.
Other studies that we heard about: Cougar and wolf predation; Emotional impacts on ranchers from wolf translocations.
The group then discussed other potential members for the Committee. Robert Wayne would like to be included. We also would like someone with a background in human dimensions such as Stefanie Shwiff or William W. Shaw.
Terry Johnson expressed his opinion that one benefit of this group would be to review proposals from researchers to assist the Adaptive Management Oversight Committee (AMOC). If agreed, the group would provide recommendations on the quality, priority and costs of proposal research.
Meeting was adjourned at 6:00 p.m.
The group agreed on the following officers:
Paul R. Krausman - Chair; Melanie Culver - Co-Chair; Warren Ballard - Secretary
Proposals will be sent to the Chair and Co-Chair for distribution to the Committee for comments.
Decisions about proposals will be sent to John Morgart and Steward Breck who will notify AMOC.
- This was our first formal meeting and the impacts may not appear significant. However, the group was able to:
- a. Meet and discuss common research goals,
- b. Assist AMOC, and
- c. Establish a solid core of researchers willing to assist AMOC with the recovery of the Mexican Gray Wolf
Publications are being prepared.
