Accomplishments
The L. Dale Van Vleck Symposium was sponsored and organized by NCERA-199 members and provided a forum to discuss research and honor Dr. Van Vleck for his many years of research and contribution to animal genetic evaluations.
This symposium, held in conjunction with the NCERA-199 annual meeting, attracted a much wider audience of non-members to the annual meeting than has attended in previous years, allowing for a greater forum for exchanging ideas. A potential for online graduate education, a collaborative effort with the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium, was discussed and supported by many members of NCERA-199.
Impacts
- Research on genetics of disease resistance has provided the industry with breed specific estimates of heritability for respiratory disease in feedlot cattle and greater clarification of environmental factors influencing disease prevalence.
- Research on carcass endpoints has provided US beef breed associations with justification for various carcass endpoint adjustments in their genetic evaluations.
- The committee hosted the Van Vleck symposium with an attendance of approximately 100.
