Accomplishments

Evaluation of the anthelmintic activity of naturally occurring fungi in laboratory and field experiments. Work is still being done in several species. Ray Kaplan (GA) and Jim Miller (LA) reported that a commercial producta bolus or feed additive-- is still under development. Jim Miller indicated that this product would probably not be effective alone for parasite control but would be useful in an integrated parasite control program. The product appears to have considerable potential. Additional stations may evaluate this product.

Numerous stations have collaborated on the use of diatomaceous earth as an anthelmintic, a compound that is very popular among organic producers. Zajac (VA), Miller (LA) and Stromberg (MN) have found that there is little if any activity against helminths in sheep or cattle. A joint publication should be developed.

Studies that identify parasitic antigens that can serve as targets for control of parasitic infections are progressing. These studies are collaborative between (Gasbarre, Zarlenga; ARS MD, Lindsey; VA)

Pasture management as a means of controlling parasitic infections is also an ongoing project between (Kaplan, GA; Studeman, ARS GA; Stromberg, MN)

A collaborative study on the development of resistance to equine anthelmintics was discussed. The protocols have been developed and the study will be conducted next year, collaborating stations are (GA, LA, FL).

Impacts

  1. Diatomaceous earth does not appear to have any activity as an anthelmintic.
  2. Identification of antigens that can serve as targets for control of parasitic infections.
  3. Numerous lay publications dicussing parasite control.
