Accomplishments

1. Members of NCR-199 published multiple trade magazine articles for national beef breed and regional beef cattle associations. NCR-199 members made several presentations at the Beef Improvement Federation Annual Convention, National and Regional Animal Science meetings, and extension presentations to disseminate current beef cattle genetic research. 2. The second Beef Cattle Genetics Brown Bagger educational program was sponsored and delivered with the assistance of several NCR-199 members. The forum was titled Beef Cattle Genetics: Fine-Tuning Selection Decisions. This series provided continuing educational opportunities to industry, extension, and university personnel. 3. NCR-199 members worked with the NBCEC to host two workshops for beef cattle extension specialists and beef breed association staff members. Both workshops reviewed multiple topics related to genetic evaluation of beef cattle and an additional educational opportunity for dissemination of current topics. 4. Members of the NCR-199 committee actively participated in a national committee focused on genetic improvement of beef cattle adaptability. The NBCEC hosted the meeting; however, multiple NCR-199 members participated as committee members, speakers, or meeting participants. 5. The NCR-199 committee agreed to continue the efforts of the committee through the renewal of their project in 2006. Members of the committee will work together to draft and submit by December 2005.

Impacts

  1. NCR-199 members provide service to numerous beef cattle producers through national sire summaries, research, and consultation for beef cattle breed association membership.
  2. Educational programs, such as the Brown Bagger Series impact beef production efficiency through rapid transfer of knowledge from research into production.
  3. The research and implementation of Economically Relevant Traits provides cattle producers with selection tools with a direct impact on profitability.
  4. NCR-199 members developed and released a new expected progeny difference (EPD) for tenderness and enhanced current statistical methodology for national evaluation of beef cattle.
