Accomplishments

NCR-180 is a special interest group to facilitate interactions between scientific disciplines interested in site-specific management, as well as state experiment station researchers, college instructors, federal researchers and industry representatives. The annual meetings provide that interaction and are a forum for establishing collaborative relationships and exchanging information. Interactions and collaborations between individual members continue throughout the year. The participants develop a list of critical issues in site-specific management that are distributed between the members. These issues are used by participants in their individual and collective research plans. Issues identified in 2004 include the following. " Quantification of spatial auto-correlation between soil/crop factors that bias the tradi-tional statistical tools used in decision making " Development and calibration of sensors for plant nutrient status " Development of a decision support environment that can integrate many spatial data layers with scientific understanding of biological, chemical and physical phenomenon that occur in plants and soils " Description of the economic and environmental conservation advantages of site-specific management, and development of evaluation tools for potential adopters " Development of tools and techniques that can make site-specific management scale-neutral " Development of a systems approach to incorporating information technologies into crop management, regardless of the scale of the information Specific impacts that NCR-180 participants report that the committee has had on their programs or activities are listed in the impact section.

Impacts

  1. " Established collaborative relationships that resulted in multi-state research proposals and projects
  2. " Improved understanding of precision agriculture practices across the country that were used in making presentations in legislative bodies
  3. " Industry representatives received specific feedback on the need for added product ca-pabilities
  4. " Scientific symposia at other venues have resulted directly from initial planning that took place at NCR-180 meetings (e.g.: Soil Electrical Conductivity at 2000 ASA mtg.)
  5. " USDA-ARS research plans have been modified based on issues discussed at NCR-180
  6. " Educational materials and methods have been shared between participants from dif-ferent land grant institutions
