Summary
NCERA 137 Annual Meeting Introduction
Tessie Wilkerson, the chair of NCERA 137, opened the meeting by introducing herself and Wade Webster, the co-chair, and led participants in sharing their names and affiliations. She briefly discussed the previous tour in August 2025 which focused on soybean diseases in Mississippi and Tennessee. The meeting began by all attendees introducing themselves including researchers, Extension specialists, and students from multiple universities and institutions.
Administrative Update
Loren Giesler discussed the group's upcoming midterm review in 2027 and encouraged building future capacity, particularly through field experiences and knowledge sharing. A proposal was made to conduct an in-person impact writing workshop for the group, which received positive interest. Loren will work with Wade Webster, Dylan Mangel, and Leann Lux to plan this writing workshop for the 2027 meeting.
Soybean Disease Pressure Updates
The meeting then transitioned to a review of disease highlights from the year, noting that 43% of respondents reported above-average disease levels, with specific issues including SDS, white mold, red crown rot, and various nematode and bacterial diseases across the region. The meeting covered regional soybean disease updates across various states. Notable disease pressures were observed in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska, while other regions experienced lower disease levels due to drought or favorable conditions.
Soybean Disease Quiz and CPN Update
Daren Mueller led a group quiz to test participants' knowledge of soybean diseases, with questions ranging from common disorders to newly identified pathogens, emphasizing the importance of proper identification and context in disease diagnosis. The group also highlighted CPN's evolution from a small group of four universities to involving over many more specialists across 43 states, with a focus on serving as a resource for existing working groups rather than running independent research projects. Key team members of CPN were acknowledged for their contributions.
Crop Protection Network Tools Development
A discussion by Damon Smith focused on the Crop Protection Network's (CPN) progress and future plans, particularly regarding interactive tools and data collection. Damon discussed the development of ROI and forecasting tools, highlighting the expansion to multiple crops and the addition of a cover crop termination tool. He announced the hiring of a data scientist to support these efforts and integrate various tools into a comprehensive machine learning and AI-assisted dashboard. Wade Webster and Daren Mueller, also discussed the importance of collecting data on frogeye leaf spot, with a focus on obtaining repeat observations to improve predictive modeling. They agreed to use a severity scale of 0-100 for data collection and to include images with observations. Joe LaForest will be providing a tool for easy data collection which will be tested on FLS in 2026.
Soybean Fungicide Trials and Rot Initiative
Darcy Telenko provided an update soybean UFT (Uniform Fungicide Trials) and a new Red Crown rot working group initiative. The current plan is to repeat protocols in 2026 to ensure sufficient statistical power for the development of ROI tools for foliar fungicides. The team discussed updates to fungicide efficacy tools for corn and soybeans, with soybean tools expected to be released soon.
Soybean Fungicide Resistance Update
Danilo Neves presented an update on fungicide-resistance research on soybean pathogens in the Bradley Lab at the University of Kentucky. The research found high frequencies of QoI-resistant isolates of Cercospora sojina in western Kentucky, with significant variation in sensitivity across different years and fungicides.
Fungicide Resistance Data Mapping Initiative
Joe LaForest presented a new county-level QI resistance map for soybean, which will be updated as more data becomes available and credited to the Soybean Fungicide Resistance Working Group. The group discussed mapping and tracking fungicide resistance data in EDDMaps, with a focus on qualitative and quantitative resistance types. They explored challenges in standardizing methods for determining sensitivity/insensitivity. It was brought up that the use of fungicide resistance maps may be used unfavorably by certain individuals to recommend fungicide applications if a county is not highlighted, even if it is due to being inadequately evaluated for fungicide resistance. Counties that have not been reported should be labeled as ‘not reported’ instead of ‘no data’. It was also suggested that creating a map of C. sojina distribution would be beneficial.
Business Meeting
The group agreed that the 2027 meeting should again be held in Pensacola Beach. Wade Webster will serve as chair of NCERA-137 in 2027, Dylan Mangel will serve as the vice-chair, and Leann Lux will serve as vice-chair in 2028.
Accomplishments
Short-term outcomes: Continued collaborative efforts of the NCERA 137 multi-state working group are advancing recommendations for managing soybean diseases.
Outputs: Within participating states, information was shared through multiple platforms including winter meetings, research publications, extension publications, social media, and other web platforms. Coordinated efforts of this multi-state project enabled data exchange for regional and national recommendations for example:
- Estimated soybean yield and economic losses caused by diseases in the United States and Ontario, Canada from 2020 to 2024. Plant Health Progress. DOI: 10.1094/PHP-09-25-0227-RS
- Fungicide efficacy guides for foliar diseases in corn and soybean: Development and validation. Plant Health Progress. https://doi.org/10.1094/PHP-02-25-0073-RS
- Soybean seed treatment evaluation under various levels of sudden death syndrome and populations of soybean cyst nematode. Plant Dis. (Accepted: 02-Nov-2025). https://doi.org/10.1094/PDIS-05-25-1114-RE
Objective 1: Coordinate yield loss estimates and economic impact associated with soybean diseases across the U.S. and Canada (Ontario) soybean producing region.
Annually, the NCERA 137 participants gather soybean yield loss estimates associated with soybean diseases from individual states. These estimates are presented annually in the Southern Soybean Disease Conference proceedings and published on the Crop Protection Network (CPN) as a resource for public use. Additionally, these disease loss estimates are used to develop the CPN disease loss calculator.
Objective 2: Evaluate, refine, and integrate management strategies for soybean diseases in the North Central region and other U.S. soybean production areas to increase grower profitability.
During 2025 the group synthesized multi‑state and state program results on seed treatments, foliar fungicides, host resistance, and agronomic practices to produce actionable, regionally transferable recommendations. Trials included seed treatment screens for sudden death syndrome (SDS), Pythium, Rhizoctonia, and southern root‑knot nematode (RKN); multi‑location foliar fungicide trials focused on white mold; and agronomic interaction studies (row spacing, seeding rate, planting date, maturity group) across diverse environments. Additional coordinated efforts included a long‑running regional SDS seed treatment trial in multiple states as well as trials evaluating fungicides, nematicides, and biocontrols. Collaborative results suggest combining resistant cultivars, effective seed treatments, targeted foliar fungicides, and data‑driven decision tools offer the best path to reduce disease risk and improve grower profitability across the North Central region and other U.S. soybean production areas. The group will continue multi‑state coordination, pathogen monitoring, and extension translation with the intent to accelerate adoption and ensure management options remain effective and economical.
Objective 3: Develop appropriate responses to the emerging or re-emerging threats to soybeans in the North Central Region, such as fungicide resistance and disease forecasting.
As a goal for 2025 the group coordinated responses to emerging and re‑emerging soybean threats in the North Central and Southern Regions, emphasizing disease surveillance and forecasting, rapid diagnostics, resistance stewardship, integrated management, and extension outreach. A few of the notable achievements include first confirmations of red crown rot in several states, fungicide‑resistant pathogen variants, soybean cyst nematode shifts, and ongoing regional monitoring. From these observations the group was able to coordinate action plans which will be essential to limit the spread and impact of emerging diseases and fungicide‑resistant foliar pathogens. Prioritizing these actions now will protect yields, preserve chemical efficacy, and improve long‑term profitability for growers across the North Central and Southern Regions.
Objective 4: Foster collaborative research and information exchange on soybean diseases among scientists with different expertise and resources in the North Central region and other U.S. soybean production areas.
During 2025 the group continued monitoring for soybean diseases across multiple states. Disease reports included first reports of red crown rot (Calonectria ilicicola) occurrences in Missouri, Minnesota, and Ohio. Throughout the season sentinel plots and diagnostic-lab monitoring were used to track disease distribution. With genetic resistance being a leading management goal, the group participates in systematic screening of breeding lines and commercial germplasm for resistance to key pathogens and diseases (Calonectria ilicicola, Phytophthora sojae, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, soybean cyst nematode, white mold, sudden death syndrome, frogeye leaf spot, Cercospora leaf blight). Multi‑state collaborations included data sharing, and pathogen isolate exchange for field and lab experiments. Additionally, teams across North Central and Southern regions coordinated fungicide and variety trials, gene‑identification work for Phytophthora and soybean cyst nematode resistance, and updated a national red crown rot map to reflect new incidences. Projects included red crown rot fungicide sensitivity, host‑range studies, and field trial evaluation of fungicide products for sudden death syndrome, white mold, and frogeye. To continue outreach and knowledge efforts the group organized presentations and tours including participation at Annual Soybean Breeders Workshop to promote breeder–pathologist collaboration and a mid-south field tour to highlight diseases based on long‑term yield‑loss surveys.
Objective 5: Improve share of knowledge and expand resources about soybean diseases and their management with soybean growers and agribusinesses.
Participants of the group organized and lead numerous activities supporting extension and outreach goals. During 2025 efforts were focused in not only in-person activities including state and regional meetings, conferences, field days, scout schools, pesticide applicator trainings, and on‑farm demonstrations but also other formats including webinars, podcasts, and social media including X, Instagram, Facebook and contributions to the Crop Protection Network. Additionally, a soybean disease tour was held August 18-21st for the NCERA-137 members which visited sites in Mississippi and Tennessee showcasing southern disease issues in soybean. The team continues to produce extension articles, magazine pieces, radio interviews, and blog posts. The goal of these outreach efforts is to educate growers, retailers, consultants etc. and to accelerate the adoption of integrated, profitable disease management across soybean production areas.
Milestones: In year (10/1/24-9/30/25) of this project, collaborative research projects continue to advance understanding of soybean disease management options and providing management recommendations to farmers. The group continues long‑term cooperative research and knowledge exchange coordinating protocols, enabling regional data sharing, and strengthening statewide recommendations.
Impacts
- Annually, NCERA 137 participants perform research to address regionally significant diseases, conduct fungicide efficacy trials, and support disease forecasting efforts. Research results are shared through extension programming (field days, grower meetings, publications, newsletter, blogs, YouTube videos, radio. and social media) to maximize effectiveness of disease management strategies and improve grower productivity and profitability. Additionally, results from research efforts by the group supported the release of the CPN Disease Forecasting tool in 2025. This tool was trained with NCERA‑137 data, achieving 37,000 page views and 4,800 users, and including several soybean disease prediction modules. This group also develops publications to report trends in regional and national disease development to inform evaluations of soybean germplasm and chemical product efficacy screening.
