The meeting was opened by the chair, Marcelo Vedovatto.

Members in attendance: Reinaldo Cooke, Ky Pohler, Barbara Reis, Marcelo Vedovatto, Matheus Ferreira, Joao Vendramini, Juliana Ranches, Pedro Fontes, Rodrigo Marques, Vinicius Gouvea, and John Arthington

States represented: Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oregon, Texas, Georgia, and Virginia.

Moderated by the chair, introductions and greetings were conducted, with each member presenting their current research, ongoing and future collaborations, and potential contributions to the group. The session included a visit to the new facilities and laboratories at the Texas A&M Animal Reproductive Biotechnology Center.

  • Strong, well-established collaborations already exist among group members.
  • Reminder to acknowledge this multi-state group in manuscripts and publications related to its activities and collective efforts.

Election of officers for 2025-2026:

- Barbara Reis was elected Chair for 2025-2026.

- Rodrigo Marques was elected secretary for 2025-2026.

Overall discussion moderated by the chair:

  • The group discussed nominating Rodrigo as the next secretary and agreed to move forward with his nomination.
  • Biloxi and New Orleans were identified as potential locations for next year’s meeting.
    • Barbara Reis, together with Marcelo and Matheus (members from Louisiana), will check the possibility of hosting the meeting at LSU in New Orleans.
    • If that is not feasible, Barbara Reis will explore hosting the meeting at the Coastal Research and Extension Center (CREC-MSU) in Biloxi as a backup option.
  • The group discussed the challenges of securing sponsorships, negotiating hotel rates, and obtaining government-rate accommodation. Members emphasized the importance of selecting affordable, accessible venues and leveraging university facilities when possible.
  • The group considered adding a new member with expertise in meat science to strengthen the team’s diversity of expertise.
  • Members discussed the possibility of submitting a group grant proposal next year and agreed to reach out to Rob Godfrey to explore this opportunity.
  • Barbara Reis called for a motion to adjourn the business meeting. The motion was first made by Pedro Fontes and seconded by Joao Vendramin.

 

Accomplishments

Objective 1. Identify and fully comprehend the biological functions associated with growth, health, and reproduction in Bos indicus-influenced cattle reared in tropical and subtropical environments

Georgia

  • Reproductive consequences of young sire overnutrition in the bovine: I) Systemic metabolic and endocrine profile. Conclusions: High gain dietary treatment (diet formulated to promote an average daily gain of 1.8 kg/d) utilized in the study promoted an obese-like metabolic profile along with increased insulin resistance and systemic inflammation compared with the moderate gain diet (diet formulated to promote an average daily gain of 1.2 kg/d).
  • Reproductive consequences of young sire overnutrition in the bovine: II) Effects on semen quality and sperm functional traits. Conclusions: The young bull overnutrition model used in this study negatively impacted semen quality, indicating that diet-induced over conditioning in young bulls decreases key sperm functional traits.
  • Comparison of different GnRH compounds on fertility outcomes in ovulation synchronized and presynchronized beef cows. Conclusions: Fertility was improved through the use of presynchronization; however, no differences in fertility parameters were determined between GH and GDT in either synchronized or presynchronized beef cows.
  • Impact of early resynchronization in combination with color Doppler ultrasonography on cumulative pregnancy rates and calving distribution in postpartum beef cows. Conclusions: Early Resynchronization strategy utilized herein as a second service strategy decreased reproductive performance compared with natural service.
  • Impact of late embryonic and early fetal mortality on productivity of beef cows. Conclusions: Cows experiencing late embryonic/early fetal mortality exhibited reduced overall performance not only compared to those that maintained their FTAI pregnancy but also to cows that failed to conceive to FTAI, underscoring the detrimental impact of LEEFM on cow productivity.

 Louisiana

  •  Chromium propionate supplementation during late gestation in Brangus cows alters offspring growth, physiology, and neonatal hepatic transcriptome. Conclusions: Cr supplementation during late gestation enhances the performance and physiology of cows, while improving offspring growth and physiology, and modulating hepatic gene expression.
  • Impacts of chromium propionate supplementation during preconditioning on growth, temperament, physiology, immunity, and rumen fermentation of Brangus steers. Conclusions: Supplementation with Cr propionate during preconditioning improved growth, enhanced immune responses to vaccination, reduced excitability, and modulated metabolic and ruminal fermentation profiles in beef calves.
  • Effects of temperament on metabolic and hormonal profile, performance and puberty attainment of grazing Brangus heifers. Conclusions: Ongoing study.
  • Fetal programming effects of removing maternal heat abatement on offspring growth, and thermotolerance during background phase. Conclusions: : Calves born to shaded cows were heavier at weaning, on d 14, 48 and 112 postweaning (P ≤ 0.03). Calves born to no shaded cows tended to lose more weight from weaning to d 3 postweaning (P = 0.09). No difference between treatment was detected for overall average daily gain (P = 0.89). Heifer calves born from shaded cows had lower average IT, compared to heifer calves born from no shaded cows (38.7 vs 38.9 ˚C; P = 0.03). Maternal heat stress during gestation reduced offspring growth and thermotolerance during summer background phase.

  Mississippi

  •  The effects of a single-dose injectable trace mineral solution on performance in beef cattle during preconditioning and feedlot receiving: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Conclusions: Usage of an ITM solution did not affect overall ADG but may increase ADG within specific production circumstances.
  • Effects of trace mineral injection at weaning on growth, inflammatory and immune responses in Bos indicus-influenced beef steers with or without growth-promoting implants. Conclusions: Preweaning estradiol implants improved weaning weight, and ITM administration at weaning enhanced antibody response to respiratory vaccines. The combination of both treatments tended to increase post-weaning body weight and immune activation.
  • Impact of shade and chromium supplementation on performance, carcass characteristics and oxidative stress of finishing steers in hot environmental conditions. Conclusions: Steers receiving Cr were heavier at the end of the study (P= 0.01). No effect of treatment and treatment × day was found for glucose and insulin concentrations.
  • Effects of creep feeding supplementation and growth-promoting implants on pre and postweaning performance of Bos indicus-influenced calves. Conclusions:

 Virginia

  • Effects of maternal Cu, Mn, and Zn supplementation from different sources on physiological and productive responses of cows and their offspring. Conclusions: Overall, prenatal trace mineral supplementation is beneficial, but mineral source did not significantly affect cow-calf performance outcomes.
  • Effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation to first-calf beef heifers during late gestation on offspring physiology and performance. Conclusions: Overall, omega-3 supplementation during gestation may have beneficial programming effects on offspring growth and health, making it a potentially valuable strategy to enhance productivity in beef systems.
  • Maternal Injectable Mineral Administration Effects on Calf Growth and Reproductive Parameters. Conclusions: In summary, maternal injectable mineral administration during mid to late gestation increased calf birth weights and tended to increase weaning weights and ADG between birth and weaning but no improvements in heifer body weight postweaning or reproductive parameters.
  • Using audio-visual monitoring to evaluate immune and behavioral indicators to lipopolysaccharide challenge in beef cattle. Conclusions: In this study, LPS administration induced measurable behavioral and physiological changes that could be captured through integrated video and audio monitoring systems. This approach highlights the potential of combining camera and microphone technologies for continuous, automated health surveillance in beef cattle.

  Florida

  • Heat stress mitigation during prepartum and postpartum altered the plasma metabolome in Bos indicus-influenced cow-calf pairs. Conclusion: Access to shade for pregnant heifers altered their glutamate metabolism and appeared to decrease lipolysis compared with no access to shade. Access to shade programmed the calf metabolism to increase primarily glutamate utilization and reduce oxidative stress markers.

 Oklahoma

  • Genomic Prediction via Reaction Norm Models (RNM) for Pregnancy Loss Using Temperature Humidity Index in Brahman Cattle. Conclusions: Changes in (co)variance components and genetic parameters provide evidence of genotype-by-environment interactions affecting the genetic response to PL in Brahman cattle under tropical conditions.
  • Assessment of runs of homozygosity (ROH) islands and estimates of genomic inbreeding in Brahman cattle. Conclusions:

 Texas

  • Relationships between individual animal variation in dry matter intake and animal performance and feed efficiency of finishing beef cattle. Conclusions: The 2 measures of DMI variation appear to divergently explain variation in DMI and the relationship with production traits and feed efficiency. However, cattle with more improved production outcomes were associated with less day-to-day variation in DMI.
  • The effect of increasing dietary limestone concentration on growth performance, gas flux, and carcass characteristics in finishing beef cattle. Conclusions: These preliminary data suggest that there may be a benefit to feeding limestone or calcium at levels greater than currently recommended by the NASEM (2016). Future research should focus on determining optimum dietary limestone or calcium levels for finishing cattle.
  • Impacts of vaccination or lipopolysaccharide challenge on ruminal and physiological responses in beef cattle. Conclusions: Overall, administration of LPS and VACC elicited an inflammatory response in cattle with increased levels and plasma haptoglobin. However, only LPS administration reduced DMI and ruminal in situ disappearance parameters including ruminal disappearance rate and effective degradability of DM and NDF.
  • Effects of timing of fat supplementation on intake, growth performance, carcass characteristics, and methane emissions of finishing beef cattle. Conclusions: Supplementing crude corn oil at 1.5% of diet DM does not affect growth performance or reduce CH4 emissions of finishing beef cattle; indicating there may be a minimum threshold of fat inclusion to elicit significant changes.
  • Methionine supply during mid-gestation modulates the bovine placental mTOR pathway, nutrient transporters, and offspring birth weight in a sex-specific manner. Conclusions: Increasing the supply of methionine to beef heifers during mid-gestation can modulate placental nutrient transport and fetal growth in a sex-dependent manner and that these effects are mediated, at least in part, by the mTOR pathway.

 Objective 2. Develop management practices tailored to Bos indicus-influenced cattle reared in subtropical and tropical regions of the US

Georgia

  • Computer vision analysis of luteal color Doppler ultrasonography for early and automated pregnancy diagnosis in Bos taurus beef cows. Conclusions: In conclusion, deep learning algorithms can effectively predict pregnancy status using color Doppler ultrasonography earlier than industry-standard methods, with performance comparable to that of trained personnel.

 Louisiana 

  • Effect of provision of artificial shade and chromium supplementation during mid and late gestation to fall-calving beef cows under heat stress conditions: performance, immunocompetence and physiological responses of cow-calf pairs. Conclusions: Shade improved dam performance, thermotolerance and calf vigor, immunity and growth. Chromium enhanced pre- and postpartum body weight, but only when shade was provided. Chromium supplementation did not improve thermotolerance but enhanced physiological responses.
  • Electrolyte supplementation for gestating beef cows under heat stress conditions: cow-calf performance, thermotolerance and physiological responses. Conclusions: Electrolyte supplementation improved hydration status and acid-base balance but this did not translate into improvements in performance.

 Mississippi

  •  Impact of maternal behavior at calving on productivity in beef cows. Conclusions: Additional work is needed to refine ethograms. Collection of lifetime temperament parameters and productive outcomes is needed. Dams with increased aggression at the time of calving wean lighter calves, whereas dams with no aggression at the time of calving wean fewer calves.
  • Impact of postweaning stair-step nutritional regimen in beef heifers on reproductive development and productivity as primiparous cows. Conclusions: Ongoing
  • Impact of ultra-high stocking density grazing system on cattle behavior and productivity. Conclusions: Ongoing
  • Impact of fecal egg count during gestation on productive outcomes in beef cattle. Conclusions: Elevated parasite load in beef cattle during gestation impacts cow and offspring productivity.
  • Evaluating preference and consumption patterns of chlortetracycline mineral supplement in commercial beef cows. Conclusions:

 Virginia

  •  Narasin Supplementation Enhances Growth Performance in Grazing Cattle. Conclusions: Under similar forage quality and availability, narasin supplementation improves animal performance without altering the intake of protein or mineral supplements.
  • Effects of a Bacillus-based direct-fed microbial on digestibility, ruminal in situ nutrient disappearance, microbiome, and fermentation parameters in forage-fed beef cattle. Conclusions: Supplementation with a Bacillus-based DFM to rumen-fistulated cows consuming a medium-quality forage-based diet increased forage intake, DM and NDF ruminal in situ disappearance, total-tract apparent digestibility of DM and CP, amount of total-tract nutrients digested, ruminal pH at 16 h and 20 h after feeding and tended to increase plasma concentration of urea-N.

  Florida

  •  Maternal supplementation of a Bacillus-based direct-fed microbials altered the cow prepartum plasma metabolome and the calf plasma metabolome before and after vaccination. Conclusion: Maternal supplementation of a Bacillus-based DFM modified the maternal prepartum metabolome and the calf metabolome before, during, and after a vaccination-induced inflammatory response.
  • Year-round supplementation of direct-fed microbials to cow-calf pairs and its effects on maternal and offspring productive performance. Conclusion: Year-round supplementation of Bacillus-based DFM via a mineral delivery method improved cow BCS during breeding and enhanced calf preweaning growth. Although no reproductive benefits were observed for cows and their heifers, DFM supplementation increased post-weaning immune response and carcass quality of steers.
  • Maternal supplementation with Bacillus-based direct-fed microbials altered
    the maternal and offspring fecal microbiome.
    Conclusion: Exclusive maternal supplementation with a Bacillus-based DFM during gestation and early lactation modulated the fecal microbiota of both heifers and their offspring.
  • Stocking method effects on Bos indicus influenced cows grazing subtropical rangelands. Conclusions: Grazing method did not affect forage characteristics and animal performance of mature cows grazing rangelands, but it may be a management practice to improve grazing distribution in rangelands in Florida.
  • Evaluation of new warm-season perennial grass cultivars propagated by seed in Florida. Conclusions: Spain is a promising warm-season perennial to be used in South Florida due to superior production, nutritive value, and persistence.

 

Impacts

  1. 1. Young bull overnutrition negatively impacted semen quality, indicating that diet-induced over conditioning in young bulls resulted in subtle decreases key sperm functional traits
