Accomplishments
Short-term outcomes: Multi-location genotype x environment studies completed its 3rd year. Early maturing, high yielding and high oil content carinata lines were identified to inform further breeding activities. Nitrogen management in carinata for most of the region has been understood. Studies using poultry litter and other organic sources of nitrogen to replace mineral nitrogen are underway. Herbicide tolerance studies of carinata revealed promising chemistries that could be used in carinata weed management. Other disease management studies are underway especially for sclerotinia and alternaria management as wellas for the manageent of insect pests such as diamond back moth. ASTM certification of the ARA CH-BIC process for producing drop-in sustainable aviation fuel from carinata was obtained. Research on value added products from byproducts of carinata fuel production is ongoing. Watershed scale modeling of rotations in the region with and without carinata were compared. Preliminary crop growth models and eonomic models for carinata were developed.
Outputs: Several carinata factsheets were developed, peer reviewed publications and extension publications are ready, production manual for carinata updated, quarterly newsletters published
Activites: End of growing season feedstock development team meeting held on August 1, 2019 to discuss results from previous season and plan for next season. Field days and workshops held in four locations in 2019. A virtual field day held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 situation.
Milestones: Best management practices developed, ASTM certification for fuel development process obtained, logsitics modeling tool optimized
Impacts
- Developing a sustainable, affordable, reliable, available feedstock for renewable fuel and bioproducts to build a resilient bioeconomy
