Accomplishments

In light of NCR-199‘s objectives, this committee has accomplished the following in the past fiscal year:

1. NCR-199 members published many sire summaries and trade articles for beef breed associations and gave several talks at industry events, such as the National Cattlemen‘s Beef Association (NCBA) and Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) conventions, as a means to deliver educational materials and disseminate results of beef cattle genetic research (e.g., the NCBA Carcass Merit Project) to the industry.

2. NCR-199 members agreed that the NIMSS web site is a suitable venue for posting information about the committee and continued to maintain the site by providing links to meeting presentations and lists of publications related to national cattle evaluation.

3. NCR-199 members prepared a Statement of Impact and Research in support of the Experiment Station Committee on Organization and Policy priorities for the fiscal year 2005 federal budget. The writing team submitted the statement on October 31, 2003, under the theme of product-based agriculture. The statements are currently under review.

4. With the success of last year‘s "Beef Cattle Genetics Brown Bagger" educational forum, a second forum will be delivered on-line in January and February, 2004. The forum is targeted to extension and industry personnel and will involve NCR-199 members and other faculty members from various universities around the country.

Impacts

  1. NCR-199 members implemented new methodology for conducting routine national cattle evaluations (e.g., multibreed evaluation methods for Limousin) and developed and implemented expected progeny differences for new traits (e.g., calving ease direct and total maternal for Limousin, udder scores for Gelbvieh, and cow maintenance energy requirements for Red Angus).
  2. Many NCR-199 members are leaders of the BIF, which is the primary forum for those interested in the genetic improvement of beef cattle. In its ongoing commitment to BIF, the committee co-sponsored the 8th BIF Genetic Prediction Workshop. The focus of the workshop was to exchange new tools for delivery and use of beef cattle genomic research to breed associations and beef cattle producers.
