The annual meeting of the NCR-57 Regional Committee on Swine Reproduction was held in Room 1204, the Ensminger Room, of Kildee Hall on the Iowa State University campus. Associate Dean Hoiberg welcomed the group to Iowa State University and provided a summary of programs in the Agricultural Experiment Station.

Administrative advisor, Dr. Baker, reported that the renewal submission for NCR-57 went well and the renewal was approved for 2004-2009. The primary request was to change the name of the committee to Swine Reproductive Physiology.

Dr. Deb Hamernik, USDA/CSREES/PAS advisor, distributed a handout that summarized pertinent issues including recently hired CSREES staff, openings and upcoming retirements.

Station reports were presented in the mornings of May 26 and 27.

On the afternoon of May 26, a workshop on Boar Physiology began with a welcome from Dr. Maynard Hogberg, Chair of the Department of Animal Science who provided a brief summary of the four research sections within the department, meats, animal breeding, physiology and nutrition. Steve Kerns of International Boar Semen of Eldora, IA, identified eight issues in which additional information would aid the use of artificial insemination by U.S. swine producers. Dr. Ron Christenson presented a summary prepared from material provided by Dr. Billy Flowers of North Carolina State University on the effect of stressors on sperm morphology. Dr. Don Levis provided a challenging overview of the status of information on nutritional requirements of boars. Little current information exists that was obtained in today‘‘s boars with reduced fatness. This void evolved in an environment where great emphasis was and continues to be placed on genetic change associated with growth rate, backfat thickness and muscling. Dr. John Parrish summarized the status of information relating to fertility of sperm produced by bull studs and how this should impact research relating to boar studs. Dr. David Guthrie reviewed the current status of use of frozen boar sperm. Cryo-preserved boar sperm remain viable for a shorter time within the uterus than extended sperm. Optimal time for insemination with cryo-perserved boar sperm is four hours before to the time of ovulation.

During the business meeting, an invitation from John Parrish for the committee to meet in Madison, WI in 2005, tentatively May 25 and 26, 2005, was accepted.

Discussion of the boar physiology workshop addressed the desire to achieve greater interaction with extension educators. In an effort to accomplished this goal, the 2006 workshop of NCR-57 is tentatively planned for North Carolina to be in closer proximity to extension educators in that region of the U.S. Incoming chair, Brett White, was requested to discuss this option with Billy Flowers. Dave Guthrie agreed to contact Billy Flowers to develop a topic for the workshop.

Members decided that NCR-57 should communicate to Deb Hamernik and Mark Mirando, via letter, a priority for an NRI integrated program that relates more to the interest of NCR-57 committee members. David Miller, Duane Davis and Tim Safranski volunteered to take the lead on this effort. It is vital to have this information to Mark Mirando by May 15th.

Accomplishments

1. The proposal to renew NCR-57 was completed, submitted and approved with the name changed to Swine Reproductive Physiology.

2. A second workshop was organized and conducted with the goal of developing a CD for distribution to extension educators who have responsibility for swine reproduction programs. This workshop addressed Boar Physiology to compliment the first workshop that addressed Seasonal Infertility followed by distribution of a CD of these presentations.

3. Scientists who participate in NCR-57 exchange research findings and develop collaborative projects to identify mechanisms and genes that control pubertal development, resumption of estrous cycles after parturition, folliculogenesis, gametogenesis, fertilization, pregnancy recognition and maintenance, and cryopreservation of gametes.

4. Publications produced by members of the committee and their associates during this past year are listed on the web page under Publications.

5. Members continued to examine teaching and advising procedures that are practiced at each participating university to enhance the quality of these services to students.

Plans for the coming year:

1. Plan for a third workshop to be held in 2006 with the goal of developing greater interactions with extension educators. A committee was established to select the topic and to present a proposal at the 2005 committee meeting.

2. During 2004, expand development of the NCR-57 web page. A committee was appointed to capture the history of the committee. Review of the web page will be a component of the 2005 meeting.

3. Committee members will continue collaborative efforts to investigate mechanisms that control reproduction efficiency of livestock species with emphasis on swine.

Impacts

  1. Disseminated information from the Boar Physiology Workshop to extension educators to foster communication between scientists and swine producers.
  2. Published collaborative efforts among committee members to advance understanding of reproductive mechanisms in livestock, to promote greater reproductive efficiency and to enhance sustainability of domestic food animal production.
  3. Conducted research within the objectives of the committee to identify complex biological processes involved in reproduction that will lead to improved technology for animal production.
  4. The workshop on Seasonal Infertility in Swine enhanced debate among committee members and fostered a recommendation to USDA, CSREES, NRI to list seasonal infertility in swine as a priority area for Integrated Programs within the NRI, Animal Reproduction funding program.
