5/19/2010 Summary NCDC221 proposal for a 5-year project: New Title Catalysts for water resources protection and restoration: applied social science research Goals 1. To create a data base of reliable, valid measures for operationalizing social constructs Goals 2: To conduct social science research on catalysts for water resources protection and restoration Project Objectives: 1. Identify and develop typologies of catalysts for change in conservation behavior, resource management and governance in a water context. There are identifiable characteristics/factors of social and ecological conditions and catalysts that affect the likelihood and magnitude of changes in human behaviors and management decisions related to water resources. 2.Determine the mechanisms and conditions by which catalysts are translated into individual, collective, and institutional action 3.Understand and develop typologies of individual, institutional, and collective actions and social and ecological outcomes 4.Synthesize and assess conceptual frameworks and analytical models of catalysts, conditions and potential outcomes 5.Identify, develop and evaluate adaptive strategies to achieve desired actions and capacities to protect water resources. Timeline: Sept 15: Submit request to write a full proposal to NIMSS Dec 1: Submit full proposal 2010-2011 Goals 1. Confirm working title as real title [august conference call] 2. Annual meeting May 24, 25 St Paul Minn. state report, current research 3. begin to develop the shared data base: 2011 annual meeting, how to share [surveys, where they have been used, published, annotated data base, theoretical concept Findings, how to cite replicated questions/items, reliability of scales Interview questions and protocols, archival, inquiry processes, Narrative process to analyze case studies to answer our research questions What site to use as data base exchange? Community of practice 4. potential collaborating opportunities, crafting research design smaller subgroups 5. Prokopy-Braiser catalyst paper #1 6. communicate funding opportunities; list serve 7. submit proposal: Sept 15 letter to request to write the proposal with issues & justification Dec 1 Completed proposal due in NIMSS 8. synthesis/combination of existing case studies for papers/conference presentations by members of the committee 9. Recruit others for NC project Responsibilities-Action items 1. Linda will set up listserve for NCDC221 2.
