Report from USSES Meeting of June 25-27, 2008
USSES held its annual meeting on June 25-27, 2008 at Auburn University. A reception was held on Wednesday night by Edzard van Santen, our local host. On Thursday, Andy Mauromoustakos of the University of Arkansas gave an overview of the capabilities of SAS JMP software, emphasizing how it can be used to enhance instruction. That was followed by a presentation of SAS JMP Genomics capabilities by Shannon Conners, SAS JMP Genomics Product Manager. On Friday, Linda Young of the University of Florida gave a presentation highlighting some of the new features of the Glimmix procedure in SAS.
USSES Business Meeting Minutes
The USSES Business Meeting was called to order at 11:00 a.m., Friday June 27, 2008. In attendance were Edzard van Santen, Auburn; Jason Osborne, North Carolina State; Debbie Boykin, USDA ARS; Paul Cornelius, Kentucky; Jerry Davis, Georgia; Hoke Hill and Pat Gerard, Clemson; Kevin McCarter and Ken Koonce, LSU; Linda Young, Florida; Arnold Saxton, Tennessee; Rob Tempelman, Michigan State; and Andy Mauromoustakos, Arkansas.
State Reports were given. Staffing and budget items were discussed.
Jerry Davis agreed to host the 2009 USSES meeting in Georgia, either in the mountains of north Georgia or at the Griffin experiment station. Kevin McCarter agreed to coordinate the program. Suggestions for program topics included updates on SAS 9.2 and the new version of JMP, a primer on the Bayesian procedures available in SAS, and possibly new approaches to data analysis emphasizing precision agriculture.
Ken Koonce gave an update on the application for renewal of the USSES information exchange group. Instructions were provided for anyone wishing to enroll as members of the group.
Jerry Davis requested input on changing the default reply for the Listserv. It was agreed that the default should not be to reply to the entire group, thereby reducing unnecessary emails.
