This message is to provide information on travel and room arrangements that have been made so you can prepare accordingly for your travels. Please note deadlines for room arrangements below.

Registration

There is a $150 registration fee for this meeting. Please use the link below for registration and register by September 30, 2018.

https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3400311

Flights

Most people visiting WSU NWREC fly in and out of the SEATAC airport and travel the 90-120 minutes from SEATAC to Mount Vernon. However, it is also possible to fly into Bellingham (30 minutes from NWREC) and Vancouver, Canada (110-120 minutes). Traffic in Seattle and Vancouver can be horrible, so you may want to consider arriving when you can avoid rush-hour traffic or just simply pull over and enjoy the city until traffic clears. Both cities have lots to offer!

Transportation

Rental cars are likely your best option for commuting from the airport you select to the Mount Vernon area. These are available at the airport and there are lots of options you can explore online. To save funds, you may want to consider sharing a rental car and carpooling with colleagues.

Another option is to take the Airport Shuttle (http://www.airporter.com/), which serves the SEATAC and Bellingham airports and will take you from the airport to a specified drop-off site in Mount Vernon or Burlington, Washington (Burlington is a city right across the river from Mount Vernon). Please look online to view the shuttle’s schedules and drop-off locations. From the shuttle drop-off sites in Mount Vernon or Burlington, either I can arrange to pick you up and take you to your hotel, you can get a rental car, or use Uber/Lyft. There is an Enterprise and Hertz in Burlington for you to rent a car for local travel in the Mount Vernon and Burlington area (if you choose not to get one at the airport you arrive in), but it is some distance from the shuttle drop off sites.

Please let me know if you need me to pick you up from the shuttle drop off site by Sept. 30, 2018. Also, please indicate your drop off site (Burlington or Mount Vernon), date, and time of arrival.

I will rent a charter bus for field tours on Oct. 23 (please see below for more details on the agenda). If there is need for transportation to/from the hotel to WSU NWREC on Oct. 24 and 25, please let me know by Sept. 30 and I can arrange for additional shuttles. There is plenty of parking at WSU NWREC if you choose to get a rental car and drive yourselves from the hotel to WSU NWREC and back.

My advice considering transportation is to get a rental car and look into carpooling with colleagues, as that gives you the most flexibility with travel to/from airports and within the area.

Hotel

I have reserved a block of 25 rooms at the La Conner Country Inn (http://www.laconnercountryinn.com/). This quaint hotel is located in La Conner, which is a little tourist town along a channel. It is approximately 10-15 minutes away from WSU NWREC. Several nice restaurants and shops are within easy walking distance from the hotel and breakfast is complementary. Room rates are $112/night. To book, call 360-466-1500 and use NCCC 2112 to receive the group rate. Reservations must be made by Sept. 22, 2018. If you need other hotel accommodations, please let me know.

Summary of Agenda

Tuesday, Oct. 23, will be reserved for field tours in Skagit and Whatcom Counties. We’ll visit a small organic blueberry operation that focuses on value-addition before seeing the larger commercial raspberry and blueberry farms in Lynden, Washington. The plan is to show you how these producers are vertically integrated from producing their own plants using tissue culture techniques, growing their crops, and then processing and packaging them. I also hope to take you to downtown Lynden for lunch and to enjoy the sights of the town. More information about Lynden can be found at: http://lynden.org/

The following days (Oct. 24 and 25) will be focused on our meetings, including a Crop and Germplasm Committee meeting on Oct. 24th. We'll also have a small fruit tasting (thanks to Pat Moore and his program!). Further agenda details will come later. The meetings will be held at the WSU NWREC (http://mtvernon.wsu.edu/) and the address is below.

16650 WA-536, Mt Vernon, WA 98273

Please let me know if you have any questions.
