Symposium:

In 1998, WCC-060 (Weinzierl, McGrath, and Holtzer) organized and delivered a WCC-060-planned symposium at the joint annual national meetings of the Entomological Society of America and the American Phytopathological Society, November 6-11, in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The symposium, titled “ Resistance Management in Reality: A Multidisciplinary Look at Progress, Limitations, and Lessons from the Field,” featured speakers from entomology, plant pathology, and weed science; it drew a standing-room only crowd in a room that seated over 250.  Summaries of three of the seven presentations from this symposium were published in the Resistant Pest Management Newsletter.

Special Meeting with US EPA and Congressional Staffers:

In April of 1999, WCC-060 held its annual meeting in metropolitan Washington, D.C.  The first day of this meeting included discussions with EPA staff on issues of substantiation of resistance, Section 18 exemptions related to resistance, resistance management concerns in pesticide registration decisions, resistance management in relation to transgenic plants, resistance concerns in the context of the Food Quality Protection Act, resistance to reduced-risk pesticides, and resistance issues related to NAFTA.  WCC-060 members also met with pesticide industry representatives who interact with EPA and congressional staff.  On day 2, WCC-060 members met with CSREES staff and U.S. Congress staff members to discuss research needs, alternatives to pesticides, pesticide registrations, and reactions to transgenic crops.

WCC-060's accomplishments during its 1998-2001 term – ongoing education and information delivery by means of the newsletter, multidisciplinary symposia for scientists, and interactions with legislators and industry/commodity groups – exemplify the types and range of objectives envisioned for the 5-year renewal requested in this petition.
